Dear Friends, The days tell a story we would rather avoid. Don Talafous reminds us that “What the Lord Jesus promises is. … not an overnight release from illness or painful confrontations, but a way through all this by following him on the path of death and resurrection. We get from him not some miraculous exemption from life but a way through all that comes to us in life, a way of handling disappointment, conflict, failure. This way tells us that self-emptying, self-forgetting is a sharing in the passion and death of Jesus. This leads to new life, resurrection, here and now in more patience, love, compassion, sympathy for the rest of suffering and hurt humanity.” Amen. We cannot avoid the hard parts of the story on our way to Easter morning.

Rev. Cramer and Deacons, We would like to thank you for the beautiful service you had for our father Ralph Timmins and for the luncheon you provided. He will forever be missed. Thank you and God Bless.

Carol Timmins Szakacs Ellen Timmins Schnelzer

Dr. Meta Cramer (and church friends), Randy and I wanted to write a note of thanks to you, your choir, the ladies that served lunch, and to all of the other members that contributed food for Norm Smith’s memorial service. The outpouring of kindness by your congregation was so apparent in everything at the memorial. It was so lovely to not to have to worry about the meal for all of those that attended the service. The luncheon was just delightful.

Love in Christ, Randy and Amy Smith

Dear Church Family, Thank you so much for sharing the church flowers with me. I always enjoy the flowers, and I enjoyed a nice visit with Lois Dunn who deliv-ered them.

Sincerely, Pat Butler

The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC will perform a “Coffee Concert For Equality” at First Presbyterian Church of Salem at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 24. Led by Artistic Director Dr. Thea Kano, the chorus is now in its 36th season. Associate Conductor Dr. Paul Heins is a graduate of United Local Schools and attended First Presbyterian Church of Salem. GMCW sings to inspire equality and inclusion with musical performances and education, promoting justice and dignity for all. GMCW has over 250 singing members, 150 of which are per-forming in Salem. The Chorus has five select outreach ensembles, 100 support volunteers, more than 400 sub-scribers, 500 donors, and an annual audience of more than 10,000 people. The Chorus and its ensembles have kept a very busy schedule in recent years, with more than100 outreach performances each season. Recent outreach perfor-mances include the National Institutes of Health, Whit-man Walker Health, DC Flag Football, Washington Na-tional Cathedral, and the White House. GMCW has won three Washington Area Music Awards including “Best Classical Recording, “Best Choral Record-ing” and “Best Choral Group.” A free will offering will be accepted during the concert benefitting the Full Spectrum Outreach Center in Youngstown, that serves LGBTQ+ people in Mahoning and Columbiana Counties.

The Environmental Team recently met and chose the theme for our Earth Sunday Celebration on Sunday April 22. The theme this year will be Plastic Pollution. The following are reasons why we feel this is an important topic for our celebra-tion.

Chemicals added to plastics are absorbed by human bodies. Some of these compounds have been found to alter hor-mones or have other potential human health effects.

Plastic debris, laced with chemicals and often ingested by marine animals, can injure or poison wildlife. Floating plastic waste, which can survive for thousands of years in water, serves as mini transportation devices for in-

vasive species, disrupting habitats. Plastic buried deep in landfills can leach harmful chemicals that spread into groundwater. Around 4 percent of world oil production is used as a feedstock to make plastics, and a similar amount is consumed as

energy in the process. The amount of plastic manufactured in the first ten years of this century eclipses the total produced in the entire last

century. (Taken from Environmental Health News)
