We warmly welcome you to worship at The Presbyter ian Church in Basking Ridge. We pray that you will be encouraged in your journey of faith and drawn closer to God by your experience with us.

Amplification Headsets So that all may enjoy the worship service, sound amplification headsets are available from the ushers for those who need assis-tance with hearing.

Online Sermons Recorded audio sermons from most Sundays are available on the church website at www.brpc.org. To access, click on the Ser-mons link under Worship and Music on the main menu.

Children and Families Childcare for infants and children ages 2 and younger is available in the church nursery during our Sunday morning services. Pagers are used to contact parents during the worship services when necessary.

Oak Table Service We believe that worship nurtures children and that children enrich our worship life together. If your children become restless in worship, please feel free to quietly move around with them or join them on the carpet for young children behind the seating area.

Sunday Worship Service 9:30 am Nursery care is available for children age 2 years and younger and children of any age who find it difficult to remain in the worship service.

Welcome

Who Does God Call Us to Be? We are a vibrant, warm and welcoming community of faith. Those who worship here come from a diverse range of backgrounds and would describe themselves in a rich variety of ways.

We acknowledge our doubt, our struggles, and that we are all quite human and imperfect and that we are each at a unique place on our faith journey.

We find our unity, our common identity, in Jesus Christ and together we seek to joyfully worship God and energetically minister to the needs of the world on God’s behalf.

We gather in anticipation of being transformed by the power, purpose and presence of God among us, and go forth equipped to love God and neighbor more deeply and more whole-heartedly.

We believe that faithful leadership of a church requires being open to new possibilities, tak-ing risks and learning from mistakes as we try again.

Honoring the past, we are convinced that God calls us to a new future.

~The Opening Paragraph of Vision 2017 of the Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Dear Lord, In the flow of traffic, a sudden merge, a glaring look and finger raised -- where is love? In our conversation, a name comes up, followed by laughter and gossip unkind— where is love? In our daily life, white shuns black, rich ignore poor, difference divides— where is love? In our world at large, people hunger, refugees flee, peace eludes— where is love? Help us Lord, amidst society’s rancor and noise, to listen for your voice and heed your call for our lives.

Church Family

The Flowers on the Piers this morning are given to the glory of God: ~ By Wendy Potter, in celebration of the marriage of Caroline Potter and William Dunne.

The flowers that grace our sanctuary each week are gifts from members of the congregation. Flowers may be given in memory or in honor of someone or to celebrate an occasion. There are two pier openings on July 15, 22 and 29. If you would like to donate an arrangement, please contact Debbie Schaub at 908-507-3844; e-mail address, [email protected].

Our Greeters for this morning at the 9:30 a.m. service are Ruth Bashe, Ruth Gombas and Carolyn and Jeff Straton.

Join us for Lemonade across the street in the shade of our newly renovated Church House courtyard following the service, hosted by Linda Metcalfe and Sue Ellen Holleman.

Guest Preacher

Welcome Rev. Pat Jackson We warmly welcome the Rev. Pat Jackson as our guest preacher at both worship services this weekend. Pat has been serving as pastor of Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church of Raytown, Missouri since 2009. A “second career” pastor, Rev. Jackson previously worked for a decade in work- force development where he helped ex-offenders, people overcoming addictions, and persons on welfare re-enter the workforce. He also served for 2 1/2 years as a primary health care volunteer for the Peace Corps in Senegal, West Africa where he helped provide anti-malaria, nutrition and sanitation

services to a population of 10,000 people across 28 villages.

Rev. Jackson received his Masters of Divinity from the Saint Paul School of Theology, his Masters in Public Administration from New York University, and his BA from the University of Michigan. His life is immeasurably enriched by his wife Janet Thompson Jackson who is Professor at Law at the Washburn School of Law in Topeka, Kansas. They are blessed by their daughter Elyse who is currently in the 7th grade and a member of the America Youth Ballet Company of Overland Park, Kansas.

In addition to the joys of ministry, Rev. Jackson enjoys reading, movies, travel, photography, sports and the gifts of family and friends. If his life passion were summed up in a phrase, it would be ‘the quest for reconciliation.’ Pat is the son of our 16th pastor, the Rev. Dr. J. Cal-vin K. Jackson, and grew up here in the life and ministry of the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church. We also welcome Cal, pastor emeritus of BRPC, who joins his son and will read one of the Scripture Lessons today.

In addition, we will share stories, games, songs and crafts at Neighborhood House Pre-school. We will end at 5 p.m. on August 12 and will spend that afternoon at the home of Dick and Betsy Fryling, enjoying a pool party! Middle School Mini Work Camp Day Trip—Tuesday, July 10, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Middle School youth will meet at 9 a.m. and head to Morristown to help lead games and crafts in the kindergarten where we will serve in August. Children and Family Ministries

Vacation Bible School—July 30-August 5 Get ready to set sail on a Bible adventure, Shipwrecked, from July 30-Aug 3. Registration is available online at www.brpc.org. We officially have a Captain aboard, but still need lots of crew members! For information on any of our children’s programs, please contact Susan Ward at [email protected] or Beth Donley at [email protected].

Sunday School and Nursery Update for Summer During the summer months, we will not have formal Sunday School classes. All children are welcome to stay in worship. Be sure to pick up an age-appropriate bulletin and activity sheet to make it easier for our youngest church family members to stay engaged. We realize that this may not be ideal for some children who may not be ready or willing to sit for an extended period of time. Please know that we are relaxing our nursery guidelines and general structure for the summer to ensure that everyone has a positive worship experience. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Ward at [email protected].

Trustee Update

An Update on the Sanctuary and Chapel Roofs

Dear Friends,

As mentioned in previous communication to the congregation, inspection of the Sanctuary and Chapel roofs last Fall confirmed that both roofs have reached the end of their lives and need to be replaced. Our Sanctuary roof dates back to 1869! The original roof was torn off in a severe storm that some said was a tornado with large pieces of the roof ending up in our Great Oak Tree. The Chapel roof was the original roof installed in 1954—a different quality slate but still lasting almost 65 years. Both roofs will be replaced with Vermont slate which should give us another 100+ years of protection. After several months of study, the Trustees, with Session's approval, have signed a contract with Alden Bailey Restoration - experts in dealing with roof restoration in historic build-ings. They come highly recommended by our Historic Architect consultants, Connolly and Hickey. The project will include new slate roofs, new copper gutters and leaders, and paint-ing/restoration of the fascia/molding around the sides of the church. The total cost of the project will be approximately $275,000. Initially, it will be financed with funds from the Historic Building Fund Endowment. However, thanks to an incredible bequest from the es-tate of a church member, Marion Bonnell, the total cost will be covered from her estate once it settles early next year. We are truly blessed by this gift as we face one of the largest and most expensive projects in our recent history. Slate for the project has been ordered and is expected to be delivered later this month. The roofing contractor has begun to deliver needed equipment to the church property and certain prep work is underway. The overall project is expected to take 2-3 months to complete. Care will be taken to minimize inconvenience to the daily life of our congregation and to our friends at The Tree House, but we will be dealing with work crews and equipment including scaffolding. This will result in the temporary closure of walkways around the church while work is in process - typically 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM weekdays. Periodic updates will be pro-vided as work progresses including alerts of walkway closures and alternate means of access to Westminster Hall. Access to all worship services during the summer will not be impacted. To quote a time honored phrase - this is a temporary inconvenience for a permanent im-provement! Please give us your support and understanding as this project moves along. Sincerely, Jay Link and Michael Poehner, On behalf of the BRPC Board of Trustees

Contact Allison Fahey ([email protected]), Jon Klippel ([email protected]), or Rev. Dennis Jones ([email protected].)

Our Beautiful Piano After serving many years as our rehearsal piano in the choir room, we’ve cho-sen to share our 1926 Steinway baby grand with you in the Sanctuary. Our hope is that this beautiful instrument will enhance our weekly worship together and create a richer music experience during our special events. It also gives our youth and adult pianists and guest artists a truly remarkable instrument to play. The Yahama upright piano has been moved into the choir room and will serve as our rehearsal piano. Enjoy! Chris Fortin, Director of Music Ministries The Worship & Music Council
