Does living in a complex give you a false sense of security?More and more units in complexes are

being broken into.The problem is that once the criminals have gained access to the complex, it is likely that they will break into more than one unit, as well as any vehicles they may come across.On 23rd and 24th February two units in a complex in Bartlett were broken into, but the suspect was unlucky on the 24th when the resident caught him.In many of the recent incidents, throughout the various Precincts, the suspects are breaking in through the bathroom window, which indicates that the suspects are possibly young or relatively small.How do they gain access to the complex?Believe it or not it is often very simple and effortless, thanks to the negligence of some of the residents. They can drive in behind you if you don’t wait for the gate to close. They will park at the gate in the hope that

the first person who comes along will open for them. They will buzz several units and eventually someone will open for them. The criminals have also been known to ‘move into’ a complex, giving them free access to come and go when they please.People leave valuables clearly visible in their vehicles overnight, some don’t even lock their vehicles.Do you ever question anyone wandering around the complex?If you have a guard at the main gate, is there a procedure for the guard as to who he can let in and what he should do before allowing them entry? It is easy for someone to say they’ve come to install or repair something at a particular unit.Maybe you need to consider beefing up your security. One option is to install CCTV cameras. Perhaps have off-site monitoring. There are many systems available which allow you to control who goes in and out of your complex. Something worth considering!

National Strike – 7 MarchCosatu are set to go ahead with a planned national strike on March 7 against labour brokers after attempts to broker a deal at Nedlac failed.Congress of SA Trade Union's spokesperson Patrick Craven said the protected strike was necessary for the "effective resolution of this matter"."The National Economic Development and Labour Council's section 77 standing committee has now confirmed that there is a deadlock between the social partners

at Nedlac on the question of labour," said Craven."Cosatu is therefore calling on all workers to support the socio-economic protest action by engaging in various forms of protest."This involves work stoppages, rallies, marches and lunchtime pickets from as early as February 29.Cosatu called for people to boycott businesses that used labour brokers. It also wants the withdrawal of provident funds invested in businesses that use labour brokers.Craven said the federation would assess the programme of action and decide on the way forward after the strike, but that if necessary

the duration of the strike could be extended.SAPA – 15 February 2012This is likely to be the first of many strikes planned for this year.NUMSA are also expected to take strike action later in March, followed by the security industry.Our business precincts in the Boksburg area have already made contingency plans, in conjunction with the SAPS, in the event of strike action, and an appropriate procedure has been drafted.A meeting was scheduled for businesses in the Apex area on Tuesday 28 February 2011 to discuss this issue.

Here we are again at the end of February already. It's amazing how time flies! February saw a rise in armed house r o b b e r i e s a n d

hijackings, which is of serious concern for us. Theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles is also consistently high. We really need to be more alert about where we park our cars and more importantly, if the pavement is your only option, please make sure that all valuables are removed. At the top of the list now are Toyota Hiluxes and Fortuners. In excess of 12 were taken in the last week. Apparently the engines fit exactly into a Toyota Quantum.There were a couple of great recoveries as well as arrests last week, also including some "chop shops" being busted.We must give a word of thanks to the Authorities, SAPS, EMPD, all Tracking Companies, who put their lives on the line every day, so that we can be a bit more safe when we arrive home and leave home.The number of housebreakings has also increased, with mainly plasma/flat screen TVs and laptops being stolen.

Please ensure that you do not leave your laptops, handbags and cell phones close to a window. These items are often taken without the criminals actually setting foot in your home. They simply bend/damage the burglar proofing and take these items out through the window.We also cannot stress enough the importance of having copies of your maids and gardeners identity documents. It is extremely important, especially when there is a break-in and they disappear suddenly. We appeal to our residents not to hire workers that are not from SA. There is also a hefty fine that you would have to pay if you are caught employing them.Keep the grass/pavement area outside your home clear. Pick up anything that should not be there – no matter what it is. Also check that there is nothing tied to a tree. Criminals are known to ‘mark’ properties.If you are at home during the day, keep an eye out for anything suspicious happening in the street and alert the Control Room on 0861 425 493 or 011-425-4933 if you see anything suspicious.With a concerted effort by all our residents, we CAN make Farrarmere a safer suburb.Yours in Community Safety

Although crime in our area has been

relatively stable in recent months, we experienced 3 armed robberies in Atlasville during February, which does not bode well.

There were 2 separate incidents where school

children walking in the street were robbed of their cell phones. There would appear to be criminals driving around in our street hoping to catch people unawares.Please be extra vigilant when you approach your driveway, especially at night.A word of warning once again when drawing cash from the bank. There have been a number of incidents recently where people have been followed home and robbed at gunpoint.

The consultants are still busy with the designs. We are having a meeting with them on Thursday to address outstanding issues.2. A landscape Architect (Alan Cooper from Outer Space Planning & Design cc) has been appointed on an ‘as and when required’ basis for stormwater projects in the region. He will oversee the landscaping related work for the

Atlasville project. He must also assist with the appointment of a Landscape Contractor for this and other projects.3. The intention is to use one of our “as and when” Roads & Stormwater contractors for the earthworks and stormwater related parts of the project. These contractors are scheduled for appointment towards the end of February.4. It appears that there is a hiccup with the issuing of the Water Use Licence for the project. The consultants are following up.5. In summary, we anticipate that work will commence in late April or May on the project.UnquoteHere’s hoping this project will put an end to our flooding worries.

"Let’s beautify our town and keep the grass on our pavements neat and tidy. HI-JACKED VEHICLE RECOVERED

A hi-jacked vehicle was recovered with four suspectsandafirearm.

On 2012-01-21 at about 23:15 a VW Jetta 3 were hi-jacked in Boksburg North. The complainant arrived home after work and stopped in front of her garage. Two unknown black males were suddenly standing next to herdoor. Theonemanpointedafirearm(handgun) at her head and demanded that

she must get out. He demanded her jewellery, and then they jumped into her vehicle and left the scene.

On 2012-01-25 the Vosloorus Saps recovered the vehicle. They also arrested fourblackmaleswithafirearm(pistol)andopened a possession case. They were then brought to Boksburg North Saps were both cases will be investigated together.

STOLEN VEHICLES RECOVEREDWarrant Officer Peterson Monage and Constable Wessel Brits recovered three stolen vehicles at a company in Jet Park.

On 2012-01-24 at about 14:30, the members followed up information received. Upon arrival at the scene, they found the three vehicles, one Jeep Cherokee, two Hyundai H100

pick-up trucks. After further investigation they found that there were tampered with the engine and chassis numbers.They also found that these vehicles were sold to the company with fraudulent papers. One suspect were arrested and detained at Boksburg North Saps. This matter is currently being investigated further.

These are a few snippets of just some of the crimes that have been reported

in the last week:Crime snippetsFEBRUARY 20 – Suspects broke in through the roof of a business in Star Street, Atlasville and stole cigarettes.FEBRUARY 20 – A home in Taurus Drive, Farrarmere was broken into and a TV stolen.FEBRUARY 20 – A vehicle was broken into at a shopping centre in Northmead, and cash was stolen.FEBRUARY 21 – The security gate of a home in Neptune Street, Atlasville was forced open by suspects, who stole a computer.FEBRUARY 21 – 2 homes in Farrarmere were broken into, one in Coleridge Road and the other in Kwartz Street. FEBRUARY 21 – 3 break-ins took place in Northmead, one in Eighth Avenue and two in Ninth Avenue.FEBRUARY 22 – An armed robbery took place in Wielewale Street, when the resident was approached by 2 armed men when she stopped at her driveway. The suspects stole jewellery after breaking in through a window.FEBRUARY 24 – A home in Benoni Road, Benoni North was broken into. The suspects forced open a window and stole a computer.FEBRUARY 24 – A vehicle was stolen from Wilstead Street, Benoni CBD area.FEBRUARY 24 – Windermere Drive, Farrarmere was the scene of a break-in, where suspects forced open the burglar bars and stole a plasma TV and a laptop.FEBRUARY 24 – A window and burglar bars were forced open at a property in Newlands Avenue, Western Ext. The suspects stole a laptop and a camera.FEBRUARY 25 – A property in Patten Road, Benoni Small Farms was broken into and jewellery stolen.FEBRUARY 25 – Suspects forced open the front door of a home in Dr H S Van der Byl Street, Bonaero Park and stole several items.
