At Erin we’ve been making compost for decades. Appearance and texture are important no doubt but top quality compost gives plants the best possible chance to flourish by providing the ideal balance of nutrients, stability, air and water holding capacity. Not all composts are equal and choosing the right brand has become more and more challenging for both retailers and consumers. In pursuit of alternatives to peat and with the addition of green waste compost, coir, wood fibre and a whole host of other ingredients many brands have sacrificed quality for expediency.

At Erin we have chosen to keep it simple. If you want quality peat based compost we have it in our Traditional range. If you want quality peat reduced compost, we have it in our Excel range and if you want quality peat free compost we have that also. We will not sacrifice quality in our quest for peat alternatives.

Without a healthy and vigorous root system no plant can thrive. Roots hold the plant in place and absorb the necessary water and nutrients through the root hairs that are located on the root tips. Plants help clean the atmosphere by filtering air through the compost. The roots exchange gases and also store carbohydrates for use by the plant when needed. Erin compost has been proven time and time again to deliver outstanding performance by helping plants to develop healthy and vigorous root systems.

Erin Horticulture Ltd. was established in the early 80’s, evolving from a peat pot company which started trading in 1960. Over the last 55 years we have learned a thing or two about growing in every sense of the word. From humble beginnings in the 60’s we have sought out new markets and continue to innovate to meet the needs of those markets. Innovation is at the heart of what we do and this year is no exception. We have additions to the Traditional and Excel ranges and continue to create more products in the decorative area.

COmPANY PROFILE

We have also learned about change. We continue to move with the times in terms of technology and use best in industry plant and equipment to ensure product consistency and quality at all times. We source responsibly from approved suppliers and pro-actively manage in excess of 400 acres of peatland in the Irish midlands. We are active members of the Growing Media Association and support the development and greater use of suitable alternatives to peat. We work hard to reduce our impact on the environment particularly in the areas of energy usage, water consumption, social compliance, habitat, biodiversity and renewability.

The Erin Excel range of peat reduced composts has been specially formulated to encourage healthy plant growth. Erin Excel is a unique blend of composted recycled organic materials and top quality sphagnum moss peat. This unique blend brings together the best of both worlds. Some plants do not like growing in soils that contain lime. The most common ones are rhododendron, heathers, camellia and azalea. Blueberries fall into this category also. These are classified as ericaceous plants. They need composts that have a low pH. Erin Excel Ericaceous compost is specially formulated with the correct pH for lime hating plants. THE POWERTO GROW

We actively pursue alternatives to peat in our growing media through our research programme with Stockbridge Technology Centre at Selby. We will continue to invest in research and development in peat replacement over the next 5 years with the objective of having a peat free future in the UK. However we still have a strong customer base who prefer a traditional peat based compost. Our Traditional range uses only the best peat formula for all types of growing.

John Molloy served the company for 45 years. John was never afraid of getting his hands dirty as he worked his way up the ladder, either on the bog or in the factory. John was no stranger to working on new formulations. In fact he was so proud of this multipurpose compost that on his last year at the helm, he put his name on it.

Molloy’s Multipurpose Compost comes in both 50L and 60L sizes. Because John could never resist a good deal, both packs are offered in flashed and un-flashed versions.

JOHN INNEs RANGE

The range is named after John Innes, a nineteenth century property and land dealer from London. In 1904 on his death bed he bequeathed his fortune and estate to the improvement of horticulture by experiments and research. The result was the establishment of the John Innes Horticultural Research Institute and subsequently the development of a range of loam based products you see today.

John Innes Composts are a blend of carefully selected loam or topsoil, sphagnum moss peat, coarse sand or grit and fertilisers. The loam is screened and sterilised and then thoroughly mixed with the other ingredients in proportions designed to achieve the optimum air and water-holding capacity and nutrient content for different types and sizes of plants.
