Fujitsu UPDATETaking advantage of a busy, bustling Embedded World 2005exhibition in Nuremberg, FME announced the release of a newFPGA-based Evaluation Kit for FlexRayTM, the advanced, next-generation automotive LAN protocol.

Following a recent agreement with Bosch, Fujitsu is now licensed to use the FlexRay

Communication Controller IP-Module. FlexRay has been developed specifically

for today’s and tomorrow’s advanced in-car control systems, which

are becoming ever more complex and demanding. The

increasing number of sensors, actuators and control

systems used by modern vehicles requires a

combination of higher data rates, deterministic

behaviour and fault tolerance.

Compared with previous bus systems that have

been used in the automotive industry, such as CAN,FlexRay is a trademark of The FlexRay Consortium.

The FlexRay system developed specifically fortoday’s and tomorrow’s advanced in-carcontrol systems.

FlexRay offers significantly enhanced features. These include a

higher data transfer rate – 10Mbit/s as opposed to 1Mbit/s – plus

redundant communication channels and predictable latency. These

make it suitable for vehicle functions where extremely high levels of

performance, for real-time response, and exceptional reliability are

required. Ultimately – by around the end of this decade – these will

include steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire. Today, the first areas that

that will deploy FlexRay are chassis and power train applications.

Automotive control The licence from Bosch allows Fujitsu to embed precision-designed FlexRay IP into its

automotive control MCUs and quickly bring to market new advanced products.

The Evaluation Kit (pictured here) makes possible the design and verification of hardware

and software applications before production silicon is available, enabling customers to

get working FlexRay products to market in the fastest possible time.

The FlexRay Evaluation Kit, the first product in which Fujitsu has used the FlexRay

controller IP, consists of an FPGA-board providing the FlexRay communication

controller, the physical layer, and an MCU starter kit equipped with the MB91369, a

32-bit FR50 core. Along with the hardware comes a software package featuring a

ready-to-use communication example. The software package includes a

communication stack for the FlexRay controller.

The modular design of the FPGA-board assures that any updates in the protocol or

physical layer specifications can be implemented quickly without the need for a

complete re-design. The board has pre-installed RS485 bus drivers and also provides

sockets that allow third-party plug-in modules with FlexRay-compliant drivers to be

added. With the flexibility that FPGAs offer, the Kit meets all the requirements of

designers looking to develop FlexRay applications.

Harvard architecture The MB91369 FR50 core has been chosen, as there are MCU starter kits

already in use at many customers. The 32-bit RISC core features a Harvard

architecture, with a five-stage pipeline offering a single cycle instruction

execution. This makes it powerful enough for the most demanding automotive

applications. The 32-bit parallel bus interface of the FR50 core allows rapid

access to the FlexRay controller.

The emergence of FlexRay as the automotive industry’s most sophisticated bus

standard will not mean that the CAN protocol is no longer needed, because there are

still many application areas where the capability of CAN is sufficient, and its costs are

lower. Therefore, gateways for interfacing FlexRay and CAN will be important, and on

its stand at Embedded World 2005, FME demonstrated a working FlexRay-CAN

gateway.

The new FlexRay Evaluation Kit is the firstproduct in which Fujitsu has used its FlexRayController IP.

Chassis applications Fujitsu plans to build on its FlexRay range by releasing a stand-alone ASSP during

2005, which will be for chassis applications. The device will provide interfaces for a

wide variety of host processors and also offer several parallel and serial bus

interfaces.

In early 2006 the first Fujitsu MCU with integrated FlexRay will follow, based on the

second generation of MB91460 Series 32-bit MCUs. This will be made in 0.18µm

embedded flash technology, enabling it to run at more than 100MHz. For automotive

applications, it will feature full 5V capability for I/O, analogue parts and supply

voltage, while the core will run at 1.8V from an integrated regulator. Maximum

embedded memory for the Series is 4MByte of embedded flash and 128kByte of

embedded RAM. The first devices will feature double-channel FlexRay, as well as two

or optionally three channels of LIN interfaces plus a range of other established

Since its foundation as long ago as 1996 (in those days it was known as

Embedded Systems and was located at Sindelfingen near Stuttgart - right next door

to Daimler-Crysler’s largest production plant), the German ‘Embedded Show’ - has

gone from strength to strength each year.

It has now become a firm fixture in the calenders of thousands of

engineers working on embedded solutions. From those modest beginings it has not

just changed it name but expanded dramatically in terms of numbers of visitors and

exhibitors (see separate article on Page 4).

At last month’s show Fujitsu demonstrated a number of its own ‘Embedded’

solutions:- Among them, an evaluation kit for FlexRayTM, several advanced Sensor

devices, a multimedia car Infotainment system based on a MOST network, as well as

the launch of a new 32-bit MCU. All of these, and more, are described in this Spring

issue of ‘Fujitsu Update’.

Altogether a great show, coming at just the right time. Perhaps Embedded World 2005

will give the industry a much needed stimulus and

support a return to sustainable growth for both Embedded Solutions suppliers and

users. We at Fujitsu are ready to support you.

As the man says ‘I’ll do my very best’ !

Embedded World - same procedure as every year!

Embedded World 2005 sets new records –despite wintry weather

FME’s stand at Embedded World 2005. Theevent attracted a record number of exhibitors.

The Embedded World 2005 Exhibition and Conference, which took place in Nuremberg, at the end of February,

set another new record for the number ofexhibitors – 487 from 24 countries, a riseof 22%, with more than a third comingfrom outside Germany. This underlinesEmbedded World’s position as the Nr.1European event for the embeddedcommunity.

The number of visitors remained much the same as 2004, at around 11,000, but that

was despite very wintry weather across Europe, which saw many flights cancelled at

several major airports.

Huge range of applications The exhibition displayed the full range of technologies and products – hardware,

software, tools and services – that the world of embedded systems now offers,

across some 23,000 square metres of display space. The spectrum of applications for

embedded systems is now huge, ranging from cars and PDAs to a football that can

report its own position to the referee down to the nearest millimetre.

In addition to the Exhibition, the International Embedded conference featured

20 sessions, 3 workshops, 3 tutorials and over 730 participants and speakers from

23 countries.

Many of the on-stand demonstrations staged by Fujitsu related to the automotive

industry, as this issue of Fujitsu Update reports. Furthermore, at the Experience Area

Automotive stand in Hall 10, visitors could see the applications of embedded

technologies live in the car showing how embedded solutions are now making driving

safer and more comfortable.

The next Embedded World Exhibition and Conference takes place from

14th-16th February, 2006.

Accelerometer and fingerprint sensordemonstrated at Embedded World

The embedded fingerprint development kit MDFP200-EDK, features a built-in MCU andCMOS single-touch fingerprint sensor

Two live demonstrations staged at the Embedded World 2005show centred on a new accelerometer developed by

Fujitsu using micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS)technology, and Fujitsu’s fingerprint sensor.

The accelerometer, the FAR-S2AB, is a small but highlysensitive device that can detect acceleration, inclination and

vibration by measuring motion in all three axes, x, y and z,simultaneously.

The device uses state of the art MEMS technology, in which tinystructures are built on the surface of the chip. The accelerometer

consists of a mass at the centre of the chip, which is suspended by fourbeams doped with piezo-resistive material. When the sensor is subjected to

acceleration in any direction, the mass moves and causes the four beams todeform and so change the resistance in the piezo material. This enables the

sensor to detect the acceleration.

Self diagnosis Other features of the FAR-S2AB include a built-in temperature sensor and self-diagnosis functionality, external connection for low pass filters, and automaticcorrection of the mounting angle.

MOST network and Fujitsu components createcomprehensive in-vehicle infotainment system

First complete solution using Fujitsu componentsin a MOST automotive network.

One of the most sophisticated and comprehensive multimedia carinfotainment systems yet developed was a highlight of the livedemonstrations featured on FME’s stand at the Embedded World2005 event.

This is the first complete solution of its kind

designed using Fujitsu components in a MOST

(Media Oriented Systems Transport) automotive

network. The developer is Hyundai Autonet

Company Ltd (HACO) of Korea, which was spun off

from the electronics division of the former Hyundai

Electronics in 2000. It develops multimedia

equipment such as car audio, AV, navigation, and

telematics systems, and electronic control units for

applications like airbags, body control, engine

control, tyre pressure warning and trip computers.

The MOST network demonstrated at EmbeddedWorld 2005, showed the comprehensivedistribution of multimedia content.

HACO has produced a series of modules for MPEG transmission over MOST with the

aim of exploiting MOST technology not only for audio and control, for which it was

originally developed, but also for video transmission. There are two main product

areas that the modules can be used in, Driver Information Systems II (DIS II), and

Multimedia Information Systems (MIS).

Automotive network DIS II is a comprehensive automotive network system that comprises MOST, wireless

and CAN networks. The MOST network is used for distribution of multimedia content,

the wireless network is used for mobile telephony, and CAN for body control areas.

MIS targets rear-seat entertainment systems for the OEM and after-market sectors. It

features just the MOST network for distributing multimedia content, and centres on

the provision of multiple screens in the car.

In the system, the processing of analogue signals from TV and DVD players is based

on Fujitsu's reference system VideoCompressor4MOST, developed by OASIS Silicon

Systems. The Fujitsu MPEG Encoder compresses the analogue signal, adjusting the

bandwidth according to the MOST busload.

Fujitsu’s SmartMPEG decompresses the MPEG content transmitted via MOST and

provides the decoded video to the front and rear seat displays with the corresponding

OSD (On Screen Display). The Fujitsu Graphic Display Controller (GDC), Coral-P, is the

key component used in the car navigation system to provide sophisticated 3D/2D

graphics for data such as graphical user interfaces and maps.

Reduce development time The MPEG Decoder and GDC elements were designed by HACO, as opposed to the

MPEG Encoder, whose circuit was adapted from an existing Fujitsu reference system.

This strategy meant that HACO was able to reduce the development time to just six

months, including any specific modifications that were required.

“The extremely short development time shows the advantage of using Fujitsu

components and the synergies between HACO, FME and OASIS, resulting in products

that are set to revolutionise the car entertainment market,” said Miguel Estevez,

FME’s Senior Marketing Engineer.

“Without FME’s powerful support we could not have anticipated developing any

products with such a short lead time,” said Jack Kim, HACO’s Car Network Technical

Manager. “Fujitsu supplied excellent documentation and resources and offered a fast

email Q&A service. We firmly believe that video transmission over MOST will gradually

increase and Fujitsu’s chip will be utilised more and more.”

Multimedia content Combining MOST technology with these Fujitsu components creates networks that

are at the cutting edge for the automotive market, increases system flexibility, and

significantly enhances performance for end users compared with the best existing

analogue systems. The multimedia content on the MOST bus can be selected in any

possible combination, so that every passenger can access whatever service they

want. Such a system means the car, as a complete multimedia infotainment centre, is

now a reality.

MOST has emerged as the automotive industry’s high-speed digital networking

standard, perfectly suited to be the backbone technology for in-car infotainment

systems. Using MOST enables car manufacturers and suppliers to add a host of

multimedia devices, such as CD players, AM/FM radios, TVs, DVD players, navigation

systems, mobile phones, and in-car PCs, into the automotive environment, while

meeting the specific requirements of any vehicle.

Already a significant number of vehicles contain a MOST network, mostly top models

such as Rolls-Royce, Maybach, the Smart Roadster, Audi A8, BMW 7, 5 and 6 series,

and Mercedes E and S class. Last year saw MOST networks starting to appear in mid-

range vehicles like the Mercedes A and C class, and the BMW 1 and 3 series.

Two other applications featuring the SmartMPEG platform were on show at Embedded

World 2005. A software JPEG decoder from TARA Systems, of Munich, has been

optimised for use with the SmartMPEG, which makes it easy to enable devices such

as settop boxes to play back images form a digital camera. Another German company,

AixSolve, has produced a reference design for a DVB LanCoder, which integrates the

functionality of a personal video recorder (PVR) with what it calls a ‘mediaadapter’,

making it suitable as the hub for a small home PC-based network.

8-bit flash controller family five times faster

The Bassoon MCU mounted on the low costevaluation board, Concerto.

Home appliances as well as other consumer goods andautomotive LIN-slaves are the target applications for a new

Fujitsu flash microcontroller (MCU) family, the F2MC-8FX,which offers 8-bit processing.

The first device in the new family was shown in a working demonstration

staged on the FME stand at the Embedded World 2005 show,

operating as a controller for a miniaturised washing machine,

handling the various cycles and programmes of the machine.

There will be a wide range of individual members in the family, which are named

after musical instruments. The device featured at Embedded World 2005 was the

Bassoon, MB95F108H, a 64-pin chip available in 5V and 3V versions. Three devices

(100-pin, 48-pin and 28-pin) will be introduced in July this year, with several others in

the pipeline.

Dual operation The F2MC-8FX family offers significant enhancements over previous generations –

five times the processing capability, and low power consumption, just 1mA in watch

mode at 1.8V. Dual-operation flash with security is provided across the range, as is

hardware LIN.

The benefits of dual-operation flash, which can execute program code from one

bank while writing to or erasing another, are well established: faster processing,

improved code security (preventing manipulation), and a smaller PCB area.

Compact, low cost evaluation and development tools are available for the F2MC-8FX

family. These include the Softune workbench for software developments, an

evaluation board (MB2146-401), and an MCU board with the superset-evaluation

chip (Horn) on board. With these development tools, all planned 8FX derivatives (from

The MCUs integrate 512kByte of embedded flash memory as well as 24kByte of

embedded SRAM and an external interface allows direct access to 16-bit SRAM as

well as asynchronous ROM (Page Mode Flash supported). Together with a high-speed

5-channel Direct Memory Access Controller (DMAC), this guarantees fast data transfer

and simplifies circuit board design.

Serial communication is supported by an I2C interface and up to five USARTs (each

with their own baud rate generator). Four independent ICU (Input Capture Unit)

channels are included together with up to eight OCU (Output Compare Unit) channels,

four 16-bit reload timers and up to six PPG timers. Up to 12 channels of 10-bit A/D

converter and up to three channels of D/A converter are available. If a resource

function is not used the respective pin can be used as standard input or output pin.

Optimum trade-offSeveral internal clock frequencies can be selected, as well as individual settings for

the core, the peripherals and the external bus interface. Combined with the standard

power management function, these help users find the optimum trade-off between

performance and power consumption for specific applications. Implemented in

0.35µm CMOS technology, the new series consists now of two devices, the

MB91F353 in an LQFP-120 package and the MB91F355 with additional features in an

LQFP-176 package.
