Idlewild/Kennedy Airport
July 31, 1948 to July 31, 2013
Idlewild was a developer's name for a resort
and later golf club on Jamaica Bay. It
provided the unofficial name for the airport
being planned in the 1940s, while the City
Council and Mayor LaGuardia argued on
what to call it. There was no debate when
the airport was rededicated in honor of slain
president John F. Kennedy in December
1963.
April 1942, New York City began placing
hydraulic fill over the marshy tidelands of
Idlewild Golf Course. Initial plans were for a
modest 1,000-acre airport, but by the time
construction was complete Idlewild Airport
had grown to five times that size.
Commercial flights began in July 1948. On
December 24, 1963, the airport was
rededicated John F. Kennedy International
Airport in memory of the nation’s 35th
president. Today, JFK is the nation’s leading
international gateway, with more than 80
airlines operating from its gates.
The Port Authority of New York and New
Jersey has been operating the airport, under a
lease with the City of New York since June 1,
1947. In 2004, the Port Authority and the
City of New York concluded an agreement
that ensures the Agency's continued
operation of JFK and LaGuardia airports
through 2050.
A Good Time Was had By All
At our July 10, 2013 luncheon, we had a great
turn out with 52 retirees and one guest in
attendance. There were many new faces and a
few faces we see maybe once every few years. A
good time was had by all, as everyone enjoyed
the fine food and the even better reminiscing.

A Little Bit of Humor The following joke was sent to us
courtesy of Irv Georges.
Shortly after a British Airways flight had reached its
cruising altitude, the Captain announced: “Ladies
and gentlemen, this is your Captain. Welcome to
Light 293, non-stop from London Heathrow to
Oslo. The weather ahead is good, so we should
have a very smooth, uneventful flight. So sit back,
relax and … OH MY GOD !!!”
Silence followed !!!
Some moments later, the Captain came back on
the PA: “Ladies and gentlemen, I am sorry if I
scared you. While I was talking to you, a flight
attendant accidently spilled a cup of hot coffee in
my lap. You should see the front of my pants!”
Ole, sitting in seat 65B yelled out: “Vat da hell,
now you should see the back of mine!”
Special Thanks . . .
. . . to Joe DiPrisco, our host at the July
luncheon.
Back In The Day . . .
The airport at Idlewild, looking southeast toward the Atlantic Ocean, on June 5,
1947. Construction began in April 1942 with the placing of hydraulic fill over the
marshy tidelands. The original plans called for a 1,000-acre airport, which now
covers 4,930 acres and includes more than 30 miles of roadway.
