CHAPTER 1From Croydon to Naples!

Do you like takeaway food? Many people in the UK do. Walk down any British shopping street and you will find at least one takeaway shop, and often many more! Pizza is one of the country’s most popular takeaway foods. There are thousands of pizza restaurants, but many people prefer to get a takeaway. Pizza Hut, the country’s biggest pizza company, now has over 700 restaurants and takeaway shops. Customers can buy pizzas with lots of different toppings. The most popular pizza at Pizza Hut comes with lots of meat toppings – it is called the ‘Meat Feast’.

Tonight, Take Away My Takeaway presenter Dave Berry has come to Croydon in south London to meet two pizza lovers.

Both seventeen years old, AJ and Daniel don’t usually cook anything more difficult than toast! They love football, girls . . . and pizza. AJ likes his pizza with lots of meat on top. Daniel’s favourite topping is Chinese Chicken.

'I'm here to surprise two mates, AJ and Daniel,' Dave says. He is on his way to Daniel’s house with a takeaway pizza box, but

inside the box there is a surprise! Dave knocks on the door. AJ and Daniel come out to see who it is. It must be a big surprise to see a TV presenter and a camera man, but the boys hide their surprise well.

‘AJ, Daniel, how are you, chaps*? Here’s your takeaway,’ Dave says. ‘Don’t you cook your own pizza?’

‘No,’ say both boys. ‘Then I think we need to come in!’ Dave laughs. Dave wants to know how much the boys really know about their

favourite food and its ingredients, and he has a few questions for them. They go into the dining room.

‘Where does Buffalo Mozzarella come from?’ he asks.

‘Italy,’ says Daniel. It’s not the answer that Dave was looking for. ‘It comes from a buffalo,’

he tells them. ‘Buffalo milk makes Buffalo Mozzarella.’ He tries another question. ‘Where was pizza invented?’

The boys are smiling. ‘In a little shop in Italy?’ tries AJ. ‘The answer is Naples,’ he tells them. He looks at AJ and Daniel and

smiles. ‘Imagine that I have a friend called Enzo. He lives in Naples in Italy.’‘Yeah.’ Daniel is not sure what Dave is talking about.

Dave continues. ‘What would you think if I just reached into my pocket and pulled out two plane tickets?’ Then Dave does exactly that. He gives the boys the tickets. ‘Tomorrow you chaps are going to fly to Italy and my friend Enzo is going to teach you about pizza.’

The boys can’t stop laughing. ‘I was just expecting a normal pizza,’ AJ says. ‘And now I’m going to Italy with my best friend. It's all good!’*

The boys practise some Italian from a phrasebook, but they have never spoken any before and they find it very difficult!

At 4.30 am the next morning the teenagers don’t look quite so excited about their trip. In fact, AJ is so tired that he has forgotten to close his suitcase and all his clothes fall on the floor! Outside, in the dark, a taxi is waiting to take them to the airport. In just a few hours, the boys will be in another world.

When AJ and Daniel step outside the airport in Naples, the sun is shining. Dave has arranged a special ride into the city for them. It is an Ape / / – a little truck with three wheels that’s popular in Italy. The boys have to sit in the back of it in the open air with their bags. It is not what they expected!

‘I thought that it would at least be a car with four windows!’ says Daniel.

Naples – Napoli in Italian – is Italy’s third largest city. Its name came from the Greek for ‘new city’ – but it’s now around 2,600 years old! It is on the country’s south-west coast and its port has been always important. Many tourists come to see the city’s art museums and beautiful buildings. But it is not a rich city and crime has sometimes been a problem for the people of Naples, the Neapolitans.

But the boys aren’t in Naples to go sightseeing! Their driver is taking them straight to a market where Enzo, a top pizza chef, is waiting for them.

Now watch Clip 2 and answer the questions on pages 12–13.

In old cities like Naples, the streets are often too narrow for big cars and trucks. Many Italians prefer scooters as a cheap, fast way to travel. Teenagers can ride them from the age of fourteen.

If you need to carry a lot of things, the Ape truck is perfect. You can put things in the back, but it is still small enough to drive through narrow streets.

Some of the most famous sports cars in the world come from Italy. They are very expensive.

AJ and Daniel don’t have time for sightseeing, but every year millions of tourists come to Italy to see its famous buildings, paintings and sculptures. Many of the most famous ones are from the time of the Renaissance (1400-1600). During the Renaissance, there were many important changes across Europe in art, science and other areas. The word renaissance means ‘rebirth’ (born again).

architecture Renaissance Architects used ideas and styles of the ancient Greeks and Romans. At the same time they explored new ideas in architecture. Two famous Italian Renaissance architects are Filippo Brunelleschi and Donato Bramante. Brunelleschi was the designer of the Duomo, a church building in Florence, one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Bramante designed St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and many other wonderful buildings.

Leonardo da Vinci – Renaissance manDa Vinci painted some of the most famous paintings in the world, including the Mona Lisa. But da Vinci wasn’t only an artist, he was interested in many different subjects. Some of his drawings show his ideas for amazing machines that were far ahead of his time, such as a helicopter.

science Scientists were beginning to explore new ideas and look at the world in new ways. For example, Galileo Galilei found proof that the Earth travels around the sun.

art Before the Renaissance, most art was about religion. During the Renaissance, the people in the paintings became more important. Renaissance painters also began to paint pictures of stories from Ancient Greece and Rome and other subjects. Two of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance were Michelangelo and Raphael.

Michelangelo One of Michelangelo’s greatest works was the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. It covers 930m2 and Michelangelo filled it with hundreds of people from the Bible. He had to work eighteen metres above the floor.

Raphael Raphael worked with Bramante in Rome and many of his paintings are in the Vatican.
