DVJ-X1: The Ult imateEntertainment Experience

Ground-breaking. Unique.Innovative. Astonishing.

The Pioneer DVJ-X1 is all of these. Andmore. Quite simply, this revolutionarynew unit is the future of DJing andaudio-visual entertainment.

The world’s first professionaldigital video-and-audio player, the DVJ-X1 combines Pioneer’smarket- leading CD Jog Wheeltechnology and CD audio playercapabilities with the flexibility andcapacity of DVD Video.

This exciting blend of technologiesallows synchronised digital audioand video to be manipulated andplayed-back like never before. Andby combining the skills of today’stop DJs and VJs, DVJ-X1 users willdeliver an original audio/videoexperience every time.

So, the DVJ-X1 not only creates acompletely new market for clubs andbars to exploit, it also offers crowdsa fresh form of entertainment andpaves the way for a new breed ofperformer – the DVJ.

Suddenly a huge sun is dazzling the crowd from thescreen. The chorus of the track rings out, loud and clear. There’s a roar of approval.

Imagine the scene…

The underground club is a maze ofdarkened rooms and corridors, andswarming crowds. The floor fills as a darkand menacing tribal track thundersout over the PA and a time-lapse videoof a gathering storm looms on the hugescreens suspended above.

The DVJ is in control…

The crowd shouts out for more as theaudio mix intensifies. A sample froma 70s’ disco anthem breaks into the

deeply rhythmic track without warning, looping in perfect time to thethumping bass-line. The stark contrastbetween the two audio tracks isreinforced by the images on-screen…

The rain clouds darken as, out ofnowhere, a line of dancers flashacross the screens - then disappearand return. The dancers steps aresynchronised to a double beat in theaudio, in a teasing take-off of thedisco-moves from that earlier decade. The club-goers love it, electrifiedby the dynamics of the mix in sound

and vision… The deep bass poundsout more insistently, as lightningflashes emerge from the clouds.Soon, these arcs of l ight areinterspersed with a repeated imageof f ireworks in the sky: fourexplosions to every 4-beat bar. Invision, the crowd has been takenfrom one of Nature’s own lightshows to an example of the Man-made version…

As the audio continues, the DVJ mixesand beat-matches some home-moviefootage into the visuals. A pretty girl

flutters her eyes provocatively, awindsurfer zips across the surface ofa lake and a beautiful girl shakes waterdroplets from her hair. The patternrepeats for a few bars until the imagesare reversed… and then reversedagain. The movement gets faster andfaster as the backwards-forwardsmotion reflects the increasing speedof the audio.

But now, the loop of the disco-hit isblending into the vocal hook ofanother floor-filler and this new trackbegins to dominate…

The crowd’s on the edge, waiting toerupt. They raise their arms toacknowledge the current clubfavourite and the air is floodedwith hands. Suddenly, the home-movie has gone and a huge sun isdazzling the crowd from the screen. The chorus of the track rings out, loud and clear. There’s a roar ofapproval. Nobody on the floor hasever felt such intensity of experiencein a club before; this awe-inspiringcombination of sound and vision…

DVJ-X1: Making Histor y In 1995, Pioneer was one of the tenfounding members of the DVDForum, the worldwide tradeassociation for DVD hardware andsoftware manufacturers. Since then, the company has been at theforefront of DVD technologydevelopments and instrumental inits success around the globe.

The popularity of the DVD format isobvious – by 2007 66% of allWestern European households willown a DVD player.* To put this into

context, it took 20 years – more thantwice as long – for VHS players tobecome so popular.

Spurred by DVD’s popularity, themusic video share of overall musicsales already represents 6.3% ofglobal music sales, increasing by 67%in 2003**.

The DVD decade has coincided witha revival in the club scene and thearrival of digital DJs – a phenomenonclosely associated with Pioneer’sPro DJ brand.

Since launching its first digital CDJplayer in 1994, the company hascombined leading-edge technology –including the legendary Jog Wheelthat’s used to scratch, speed up or slowdown a track, or manually fine-tunecue points – with extremely durablecomponents and superb functions.

The result? A series of stunninglydesigned CDJ players that are trustedand endorsed by the world’s top DJsand venues.

The New Club Standard

Pioneer’s revolutionary DVJ-X1uses the industry-standard CDJ-1000MK2 CD player as its template, with the added bonus of DVD videoplayback capabilities.

The dual functionality of the DVJ-X1makes it useful for clubs alternatingbetween digital DJs and the newperformers – the DVJs – who willfind that the new machine has asimilarly ergonomic layout to theaudio-only unit.

For example, the DVJ-X1 has a JogWheel that uses Vinyl Emulationtechnology to recreate the feel of atraditional deck for CD playback, aswell as a Wave Display that allowsDVJs to see a track’s peaks and troughs

– making it even easier to handle.Skilled users wanting to exploit thefull potential of this professionalDVD /CD player wil l no doubtexplore the unit’s sound-with-visioncapability.

This allows the DVJ to use imagesthat reinforce and enhance the styleof music being played, either byworking in harmony with the audioor by acting as a dramatic counter-point instead.

Either way, DVJs will discover howeasy it is to operate the DVJ-X1, tocontrol the music and imagestogether, and to push thei rcreativity to a whole new level.

DVJ-X1: The Art of the DVJ The DVJ-X1 can playback a varietyof CD and DVD formats*. Digitalvideos might be the result of footagetaken by the DVJ, armed with adigital camcorder. Or they could bespecially commissioned material(perhaps with an audio-mix alreadyin mind) or clips from a range ofp u b l i c l y a v a i l a b l e s o u r c e s .Alternatively, they could be thespecial videos created by the dancelabels themselves, which are nowbecoming increasingly common.

With professionally produced DVDcontent, such as a promotional musicvideo available for re-use, the DVJcan choose to mix just the audiocontent into the track playing out,or else use the images only. Thisallows video footage to be used forcomic or dramatic effect, or simplyas a direct, visual representation ofwhat’s being played through thesound system.

* The DVJ-X1 does not play the following formats:DVD-Audio (192 KHz 24-bit), Super Audio CDs or MP3.

Whatever the source, the movingimages can be controlled in unisonwith the audio via the easy-to-useJog Wheel. This means that DVJs cansimultaneously control images andsound in exactly the same way as aDJ would manipulate music alone.

Real-time digital video scratches, loopsand instant cues are all possible. Andthe video and audio streams alwaysstay in perfect sync, even when beingreversed or pitched.

Magnificent Memory

The DVJ-X1 offers enormous scope forflexibility in performance, not least byallowing the DVJ to store up to 360 AVloop and cue points on the removable32-MB* SD card that’s also supplied.

The saved cue and loop points can besearched, selected and previewed usingan external monitor connected via thepreview output. There’s also anemergency loop feature that

automatically loops four beatsseamlessly, in line with the BPM.This allows the DVJ extra time to mixfrom one track to another.

*SD card storage capacity subject to change.
