A teacher’s cottage on the campus of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, was the place of birth of

this well-known singer. His father was professor of languages at Wiley. Penman Lovingood was

reared at Samuel Huston College in Austin, Texas, which his father founded in 1900. He studied

violin with George A. Sievers of Austin. At the Symphony Club in Philadelphia, he had two years

of a four-year course in harmony. He studied privately with }. Rosamond Johnson in New York.

His folk opera “Menelik’”’ was premiered in 1936. He was elected to A.S.C.A.P. in 1963.

CARIS VEAZEY

This fine pianist is from Ohio. Encouraged by her mother, she studied music in Ohio with compe-

tent teachers. She pursued a business course with music, voice and organ, as hobbies, which

were given up when she married. A new interest in music arose while teaching her own children.

She now accompanies and is organist at a church.
