The Phases of Mitosis

Interphase

• This Is the longest stage of mitosis, the cell carries out the various functions in the organism and the cell doubles everything in the cytoplasm.

Growth and Preparation The cell increases In size and makes proteins and molecules needed for survival. Also some organelles begin to duplicate.

ReplicationIn this stage the DNA makes copies of itself. Did you know that the cell copies 3 Billion base pairs of DNA?

Continued Growth And PreparationThe cell is still making proteins and organelles such as mitochondria andchloroplasts will be duplicated.

Mitosis

• This is the shortest stage in the mitosis cycle. The contents of the nucleus divides. The DNA molecules from the Interphase stage start to join to create sister chromatids, then the centromere joins them.

Early Prophase

• In the sixth stage, the nuclear membrane will break down and spindle fibers have formed from the centroles that have now moved to opposite ends of the cells and will start to stretch across the cell.

In this stage the nuclous disappears and spindle fibers start to form off of the centroles

Late Prophase

• In this stage the spindle fibers attach to the centromere of the chromosomes, and the nuclear membrane disappears.

Now the spindle fibers attach to the chromosomes and the nuclear membrane disappears

Metaphase

• The tugging action of the spindle fibers causes the chromosomes into a single line in the middle of the cell.

Anaphase

The spindle fibers contract and shorten, this action pulls the centromere apart causing the chromosomes to split in half.

Telophase

• In the second to last stage, one set of chromosomes is now at each end of the cell, the spindle fibers disappear, nuclear membrane starts to form around each set of chromosomes a nuclous begins to appear and now the cell is ready for division!

Cytokinesis

• In the final stage of mitosis, the cell divides and the two new cells are exactly like the parent cell.
