“...let him save himself, if he is the chosen one...”

The liturgical year ends with this Feast of Christ the King, an observance less than a century old, but expressing a constant tradition in our understanding of the centrality, in the history of the created universe, of the life, ministry, Passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Introduced in the 1920s by Pope Pius XI, in view of the rise of Fascism and Communism in the chaos following World War I in Europe, the feast reminded Catholics of the necessary primacy of allegiance to Christ as the One Savior of humanity and our model in living our identity as children of God. As political realities changed over time, the original purpose of the feast has adjusted, becoming the end-point of the liturgical year, which concludes with our praise of Christ as King of the Universe as, with the approach of Advent, we look forward to His return in glory. Yet the feast retains its character as a needed reminder of the principles that, should govern all our personal priorities and behaviors, based on the teaching and example of Jesus, a very different kind of ‘King’. Our Scriptures today offer perspective on the kingship of Jesus, rooting it in fulfillment of God’s promises to David and seeing Him, in the words of St. Paul, as “the image of the invisible God...firstborn of all creation…head of the body, the church.” Paul ends this hymn by noting that Jesus’ Mission of reconciliation was accomplished “by the blood of his cross.” Eternal Son and Word of the Father’s love made Flesh for us, Jesus is, through that sacrifice, the Source of Life for all. There is irony in St. Luke’s description of the mockery to which Jesus was subjected: despite the contemptuous ridicule of His foes in using the term, He is truly the ‘King of the Jews’. And, in response to the confession of faith by the ‘good thief’, Jesus is about to open Paradise to all who seek it.

Those mocking Jesus fail to see the power He manifests by accepting, in obedience and love, the path of sacrifice. He fulfills the ancient role of a king, taking on Himself the burden of securing the welfare of His people. Jesus refuses to save Himself at the cost of peril to others. He is not weak, but strong, and faithful to the Mission entrusted to Him. Jesus makes Himself vulnerable to the forces arrayed against Him, embracing freely the task of atonement for all sin of all time. He drains evil of its power to keep us locked in self-absorption, embodying for us integrity, humility, justice and compassion. Acclaiming Christ as King, we renew our pledge to seek always to follow His Way.

I thank all who shared with me their thoughts about my seeking a second term as Pastor. I appreciate the encouragement and the ‘report card’ offered by our Pastoral and Finance Councils. I did decide to seek renewal, and I am happy that Archbishop Myers has granted me a second term, to end February 2023. I look forward to these next years with you, and will be grateful for your prayers. God love you! Msgr. Tim Shugrue

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “….giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.” Colossians 1:12 God wants us to be happy! Instead of looking at the Ten Commandments as being restrictive and telling us what we can’t do, look at them as guides

for living a joy-filled and peaceful life. Most of our problems arise when we put our own needs first or spend most of our time trying to acquire “things”. Try putting God first in all things instead.

MEMORIAL DONATIONS We are accepting Memorial Donations for flowers for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine used for the Liturgies, and the weekly Sanctuary Candle. These items may be

donated in memory of someone or to mark a special occasion. A donation of $10 is suggested for the candles, bread & wine and sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace various items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for memorials of deceased loved ones. Contact the Parish Office.

HOSPITALITY & SERVICE - Please join your fellow parishioners for hospitality and service after each Mass THIS Sunday, November 20, in the Sarah Black Room, Parish Center. Come and enjoy coffee and donuts while making cards for the TROOPS for the holidays.

St. Nicholas Gift-Giving Shrine & Tree - Nov. 19 thru Dec. 4

THIS weekend, begins our annual St. Nicholas Gift-Giving Shrine that is located in the main lobby. This shrine includes a statue of St. Nicholas and three bowls containing holy cards of St. Nicholas. On each card will be a label on which a gift item for a needy person is listed. If you would like to help someone less fortunate celebrate the Holyday Season, you may take one of these cards home, purchase the gift stated on the label, and return the gift (UNWRAPPED) to the church. A Christmas Tree is included in this year’s shrine. On this tree, holy cards re-questing Supermarket Gift Cards will be found. If you would like to assist a family celebrate a holiday dinner, you may take one of these holy cards and return a “Supermarket Gift Card.”

All gifts donated will be given to the agency listed on the card for distribution: Cranford Family Care, Catholic Charities and the Cerebral Palsy League (located in Cranford). Please at-tach a label with the information, i.e. item, size, gender, and agency to which the gift is to be given. PLEASE DO NOT WRAP GIFT ITEM.

This collection of NEW GIFTS began Saturday, November 19, at 5:30 p.m. Mass and ends on Sunday, December 4, following the NOON Mass. Gifts must be brought to the church during the above dates ONLY. All gifts will be delivered early Mon-day, December 5. Gifts may be brought to the Parish Center daily or to the Main Lobby next weekend.

BIBLE STUDY Tuesday, November 22 - 12:45-2:15 and 7:30-9:00 p.m. (Attend the session that works for you.) Parish Center, Pat O’Keefe room Topic: Apocalyptic and Resistance 33 DAYS TO MERCIFUL LOVE (A Do-It-Yourself Retreat) Have you celebrated the Year of Mercy in any special way? If not, there’s still time. Join Fr. Tom and fellow parishioners as they journey through this 33-Day weekly mini-retreat every Thursday evening (7 p.m.) from November 3 to December 8 (excluding Thanksgiving) in the Parish Center. Details: Fr. Tom 908-276-0360 or email [email protected].

“LOOK AT ALL THE FOOD” - How often have we heard those words as we look at the abundance on our Thanks- giving Table? Many people lack food as well as a table to gather around. Please help Catholic Charities feed the hungry, as well as provide other corporal works of mercy, by donating to the clothing bin in St. Michael school yard.

Re: THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER… Naming the Bishop in the Eucharistic Prayer: In announcing his acceptance of the retirement of Archbishop John J. Myers and the appointment of Cardinal-Designate Joseph W. Tobin as Sixth Archbishop of Newark, Pope Frances named Archbishop Myers as Administrator of the Archdiocese until Cardinal Tobin’s installation on January 6, 2017. Until then, Arch-bishop Myers remains as Shepherd of the Archdiocese and will be included in our prayers at Mass.

Please Note: The Little Blue Book, the Advent six-minute reflections booklet, will be located in the lobbies of the church. Please take one per family.

Thanksgiving Table Prayer

Good and Gracious God, We give you thanks for your overflowing generosity to us.

Thank you for the food we eat, especially for this feast today. Thank you for our home and family and friends,

especially for the presence of those gathered here. Thank you for our health, our work and our play.

Thank you for our nation and the freedoms we enjoy each day. At this time of abundance, we remember those who are hungry,

alone, sick, or suffering the effects of war and violence. Open our hearts, guide our hands to assist all who are in need.

Protect all who are away from home and family serving their country.

Grant peace and rest to our loved ones who have left this life, but remain close to us in spirit.

May the peace and gratitude we feel this day remain with us always

Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
