As we do so, we are reminded of how Jesus can renew us in our heart and soul. In Hebrews 12:1-3, the author tells us, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart." Summer is a time for vacation, for rest and for renewal. We are reminded that if we want to enjoy spiritual renewal, we need to refocus on Jesus. We can enjoy rest and renewal by letting go of the heavy loads and burdens we are carrying, the sins that hinder and entangle us. We do this by confessing our sins, by repenting of how we have tried to live in our own strength and ability. We can enjoy renewal and rest if we fix our eyes on Him, choosing to persevere in following Him, in listening to Him and in being led by Him. If we return to staying close to Jesus, we will be renewed and be encouraged to hope and to trust in Him. During this month of August, let us enjoy renewal and rest in Jesus by fixing our eyes and lives on being like Jesus. Jesus loves you and I do too! God bless you! Pastor Brian

BEING RENEWED IN HEART AND SOUL In August, we continue our Sunday morning Bible Study on the Letter to the Hebrews.

Worship News

CONTINUING OUR SERMON SERIES We continue with our sermon series on Paul's Letter to the Romans on "Belonging to Jesus." In Romans, Paul shares with us the Gospel, that it is Jesus alone who saves and that it is Jesus alone who can reconcile us to God. In Romans, Paul reminds us that all of us have sinned and all of us need Jesus to save us. We are saved only as we come to Jesus in faith. As we move more deeply into a relationship with Jesus and as we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we can enter into the new life He has for us and discover what it means for us to truly belong to Jesus.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY ON HEBREWS CONTINUES We will continue our adult Bible Study during the Study Hour on the Letter to the Hebrews. As we study Hebrews, we will be reminded of the complete supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus as the revealer and mediator of God's grace. We are to persevere in our faith, knowing that it is Jesus alone who can save us and reconcile us to God. THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD'S SUPPER

SPECIAL TIMES OF PRAYER Everyone is invited to join Pastor Brian and Pastor Jerry each Sunday as we meet at 8:30 AM in the sanctuary to pray: to pray for the Sunday service and to pray for all of those involved in serving that day; to pray for God's Spirit to be poured out in our midst; to pray that we will become the church family God wants and wills us to be. The Deacons also invite you to join them in weekly prayer for our church and for our church leaders each Saturday at 8:30 AM in your homes (or wherever else you may be). Please join with your church family in setting aside time weekly to pray.

We affirm that it is God who leads us and calls us to join the church, to be a part of His body and family here at Peace. Come and learn more about how God wants to bless you and use you to be a blessing at Peace. Contact Pastor Brian for more details.

It usually happens before we know it. One day's actions become the next day's habits and suddenly, it seems, the scale is tipping. We find ourselves in serious need of some balance; and in serious need of more joy. And that's what this study will help you find— balance and joy. We all know that there are biblical mandates for both work and rest. But there's also the instruction to find joy in both. And in that joy you can discover how to move from living and earning for yourself to discovering that your job and paycheck are resources you can invest for the kingdom of God. Tuesday, August 5

KID'S CHURCH Our vision is to teach and disciple our children in being life long worshippers and servants of Jesus Christ and prepare them to worship with their parents in big church. Our goals are: to actively involve the children in each aspect, such as worship, prayer and study; to be different than the Study Hour; to teach the kids to worship; to be an actual worship service for the kids; to encourage them to memorize scripture; to have visual for prayer request; to provide weekly bulletin for kids.

PEACE KIDS’ CHOIR Rehearsals are Sunday mornings and Friday nights. We will sing in the Big Church on the 2

nd Sunday of

each month. See Miss Rachel to get the CD to practice at home and in the car.

PEACE KIDS SERVE OTHERS

Come bless the elderly at Emeritus Senior Living (on Laguna Park Drive). Our next visit is on September 14, 2014. See Pastor Jerry for more info. You know your sword? Yeah, the Bible? We’re starting a new scripture memory program with prizes--appropriate for all ages!

MEMORY VERSE—JOHN 14:1-2 1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

We were blessed to have Pastor Jerry as our "Guest Preacher" on July 13. Pastor Jerry preached on how we can recommit ourselves to being people and a church devoted prayer. He had several requests for a written copy of his notes, which are below. Both Pastor Jerry and I look forward to seeing how God will move in our midst as we grow in being a church devoted to prayer.

BEING AND BECOMING A CHURCH DEVOTED TO PRAYER

If you are wondering why you don’t sense the power of God in your life, it can probably be traced to your prayer life (or lack of it). The power to live a Christian life and do anything of any significance comes as a result of the time spend with God. Prayer really is the power source for every effective person, and every effective church. For example, there’s a marked difference between a church there merely “prays” and a church that is DEVOTED to prayer! A church that prays, prays when there are problems. A church devoted to prayer, prays when there are opportunities. A church that prays, announces a prayer meeting and some show up. A church devoted to prayer announces a prayer meeting and the church shows up! A church that prays, asks God to bless what it’s doing. A church devoted to prayer asks God to help them do what He is blessing. A church that prays thinks it’s too busy to pray. A church devoted to prayer knows it’s too busy NOT to pray! A church that prays, frustrated by a lack of funds, cuts back on ministry. A church devoted to prayer prays through a financial shortage and receives funds miraculously. A church that prays uses God. A church devoted to prayer, is used by God! See the difference? The bible tells us in Colossians 4:2 to “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Why are we told to be watchful and thankful? Because when we DEVOTE ourselves to prayer, watch out, because God is going to move in a powerful way in our lives!

NEW ADULT STUDY TO BEGIN DURING BIBLE STUDY HOUR On Sunday, September 7, our adults will begin a new Bible Study during our Bible Study Hour. We will be focusing on prayer, on how we can be a church of prayers and a church that prays together, on how we can pray as the Lord invites us to in the Lord's Prayer. Sunday, September 7 Matthew 6:5-8 "Praying Sincerely" Sunday, September 14 Matthew 6:9 "Praising God in Prayer" Sunday, September 21 Matthew 6:10 "Praying for God's Will" Sunday, September 28 Matthew 6:11 "Praying for His Provision" Sunday, October 5 Matthew 6:12,14-15 "Praying for Forgiveness" Sunday ,October 12 Matthew 6:13 "Praying for Him to Protect us"

ARE YOU UP FOR A CHALLENGE? Pastor Brian is challenging you and the entire church to read through the Bible this upcoming year. A reading schedule will be provided to guide you in this. The goals of this challenge are: - to encourage each of us to read more Scripture, including at home with our families; - to help us develop a greater sense of the scope of Scripture and to help us develop a Biblical world view; - to learn more about God and to enjoy the new life He offers us more fully. Be challenged and be blessed as we read through the Bible together next year!

ELK GROVE FOOD BANK In 2014, the Session has approved handling our giving to the Food Bank a little differently. Instead of making a pledge for a given amount, we will treat it like a special offering, sending along each month what you have given designated to the Food Bank. We encourage each family to pray over their special giving to the Food Bank, as the Food Bank continues to process and help more and more families and people each year. The church does not provide or maintain a discretionary fund to help those in need who come by the church in person, so we refer people directly to the Food Bank. Also our monthly food collection for the Elk Grove Food Closet will be on Sunday, August 3

rd and on

the first Sunday of each month. Please contact the Elders if you have any questions about this special commitment we are making as a church family.

LOAN UPDATES Our current loan amounts are: Synod Muzzy Loan: $25,532.15 as of 07-01-14 with a monthly payment of $1,458.88 plus an additional $1,500.00 applied to the principle. At the beginning of 2012, our loan amount was $91,942.059. Our current heater loan amount is $3,084.33 with a monthly payment of $187.19. You may give extra amounts to help us pay off our loans more quickly by designating loan reduction on your check. We are committed to paying off these loans as soon as we can.

UPDATE ON FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS Our church depends on the faithful Christian stewardship of each of our members in order to be who God is calling us to be. The Session seeks to prayerfully discern each year what we need our members to give in order to meet this call from God. It is normal to fall behind in our giving during the summer, as we travel or have vacations. Our overall year to date, through July, financial giving of our members is approximately 87% of this budgeted amount. Thus far, we have been able to keep our expenses down, but, we will need to increase our giving the rest of the year to meet the ongoing needs of the church. Please pray for our faithful giving as a church family and that God will lead us in boldly meeting this financial gap together. Please pray over God is calling you to increase your giving in gratitude to what God has done for you. Please continue to give self-sacrificially to God, as He has done for us in Jesus.

FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES

Did you know that there are several ways you can help Peace raise funds without spending any additional money yourself? Recycle: The Joy Singers collect recyclable beverage containers to help offset the costs of piano tuning and annual fees for music license for the use of songs that we sing and play. We collect beverage containers only; the container must have the CA redemption symbol on it to be eligible. The symbol is generally on the side of the container: CA CRV is what to look for. Please remove the caps from all bottles, because the caps break the machine. Eligible examples are aluminum soda cans; beer cans; plastic water bottles; some hard liquor bottles; & bottles that are not 100% juice or milk, like ice tea and Snapple. Not eligible are milk cartons; many 100% juices that do not have the CA symbol on them; & wine bottles.

You can either bring your bottles and cans to church, or bring them to the recycling center yourself and turn in the money to the church marked “music recycling”. The closest center to the church is behind Bel-Air. This location is closed Sun and Mon. After you turn in your items, the attendant give you a slip and then proceed to a Bel-Air cashier where they will give you cash. If you prefer for us to pick up your items, please contact Liz Irons at: 916-393-1310. The Joy singers thank you.

eScrip: We are enrolled in the eScrip program, where participating business partners contribute a percentage of your grocery loyalty card and credit card purchases to the organization of your choice. For example, you can register your Safeway Club card with eScrip, and they will automatically donate a percentage of your grocery purchases to our church. You can also register a credit card so that any purchases you make with that card at Macy’s or any other participating business will trigger contributions to Peace. All you need to do is go to www.escrip.com, sign up to support our church, and then enter any club card and/or credit card numbers that you want to use. It costs you nothing; the merchants make the contributions. The web site lists all the businesses that participate in the program. If you have any questions or would like help signing up, contact Cindy Martin. eWaste: Not sure what to do with all those old cell phones, computers, televisions, or other electronics? All you have to do is go to www.eWaste4good.com and fill in your information. Be sure to designate our church as the organization you want to support. Your old items will be picked up for free and the proceeds will be sent to us. See the flyer posted in the fellowship hall for more info or contact Cindy Martin.

VISION, MISSION AND CORE VALUES

OUR CALL

At Peace Presbyterian Church, we are called to be Following Jesus Together, Building Faith.

VISION

Peace Presbyterian Church will be a unified body of believers where all are transformed by the Holy Spirit into people of joyful worship, students of the Holy Bible and bold disciples of Jesus Christ, proclaiming the Gospel while serving our community.

MISSION

Our mission as disciples of Jesus the Christ at Peace Presbyterian Church is to reach out to our community by sharing the message of God's love and grace, by inviting each person we meet to follow Jesus.

CORE VALUES

We will prioritize our relationships with God and with one another by being faithful stewards, by loving God and loving one another through prayer and fellowship, by lovingly serving our church family creatively and compassionately.

We will seek to inspire each person to actively encounter God's presence through the power of the Holy Spirit.
