Thank you so much to both groups of children, who raised over £130 in total. They did this using their own initiative and are showing such entrepreneurial spirit! We are hoping to have the equipment installed either before or during half term – everyone is very excited! International Evening 2018!

Dear parents,

International Evening was a huge success! A very

big thank you to everyone for all their hard work and

to all the parents and family members who came. It

was a hugely enjoyable evening thanks to the

amazing team effort of all those who contributed. The

performances were super and showed great

teamwork and individual skills. We enjoyed several

new performances this year, as well as our old

favourites. 21 group performances in total, no

wonder we ran late and finished at 9.50pm! There

was such an overall sense of community spirit with

everyone coming together to celebrate the ethos of

William Patten. A big thank you to Johnnie (Cecilia

2T) for taking over 500 fabulous photographs of the

night, we will be putting them up on display in the

office and bottom hall, please do come and have a

look. They are such a great reminder of the evening!

The children taking part in the Hackney Run are

nearing the finish line as the event takes place on

Sunday 13th

May. Many of the children taking part

are also being sponsored to raise money towards the

multi gym equipment for the playground. Yusra,

Tayyibah and Asma held a cake sale in their road, as

did Cleo, Willo and Esther.

3A have been busy up on the roof! In the Spring term

we waited until the snow and frost had passed to

plant a selection of seeds – spinach, tomatoes,

chard, peas and an abundance of radishes!

Unfortunately, due to the extremely hot weather last

week… a lot of our plants were FRAZZLED! Luckily,

Janelle from Capital Growth came back and we

salvaged the seedlings that had survived, replaced

the seeds that had died and also planted onion sets

in our planter. We are determined to keep this lot

alive and will be regularly checking up on them. We

will also keep a close eye on the weather forecast

…wish us luck!

Science Week This year, William Patten’s Science Week will run from 11th-15th June and the theme is…

Growing!

Children will be going on trips, taking part in

workshops, watching shows and will be doing plenty

of science-related activities in and out of school. In

addition to all of this fun, we are very keen for YOU to

get involved! If you'd like to lead a workshop with

particular year groups, or would like to share your

knowledge of a relevant passion in a scientific field in

an assembly, then please email

your interest. We are very happy to hear your ideas.

Year 5 had a fantastic time at the Science Museum

last week experiencing science up close via the fifty

experiments and activities in the Wonder Lab.

Highlights were the slides demonstrating friction,

listening to sound through our teeth(!) and

becoming conductors of electricity. “I really enjoyed

the Wonder Lab, normally when you go to

museums there’s just stuff to look at but you can

touch things and interact with them at the Science

Museum.” Nell 5M.

5M Food Waste Project

You may remember the project 5M ran relating to

how we can use our left over food to avoid waste.

5M asked you for tasty recipes to encourage people

to use leftover food. These recipes were published

in 5M’s very own recipe booklet. Ten free copies

are available in the office – get one while you can!

Private screening at the Rio

Years 1-6 went to a private screening of the heritage project film at the Rio Cinema this week. The film was produced at the end of the recent local heritage project and features pupils of William Patten asking questions about what the school used to be like, to former pupils. Through watching the film, the children learnt about what life at William Patten (or Church Street School as it was previously known) was like in the 1920s, 1940s and 1950s from first-hand accounts. The questions featured in the film are a reflective sample of the questions recorded by all the children during the project. Our special thanks go to Michelle Deignan (Alva 3A), who did the filming and editing of the film and also to the former pupils who took part - Kathleen Housden (at the school in the 1920s), John Guest (an evacuee during the Second World War) and Betty Manning (Grandma of Olive and Ava Y3). Thank you also to the Rio Cinema for holding a private screening for us. Once again, we were well-supported by parents and carers, without whom the trip would not have been possible. We are hoping to make an online link to the heritage film available very soon.

Debating workshop at Clapton Girls

Last week Roberta Centi, Amy Tran, Ethan Lees and Zahra Jakda from 6J and Agnes McIntosh from 5D went to Clapton Girls Academy for a debating workshop and celebration. Over two days they learned and practised some important debating skills and took part in a debate against one of ten other schools which was judged by Year 10s on the CGA debating team. All five children were fantastic, with some even directing the debates as chairperson and another in charge of the gavel! Well done to all of our debaters for their great performances in front of so many other children and a big thank you to Billy for accompanying them.

Heritage Project Celebration Assembly

A special whole school assembly was held at the beginning of the term to celebrate the local heritage project. Children from each class were able to show the outcomes of work in their class’s floor book, talk about what they had learned and share what they enjoyed most about the project. Helen Spencer from Historic England was a special guest at the assembly and at the end presented a Historic England ‘Heritage School Award’ in celebration of William Patten’s heritage school status. Helen commended the work of the children and staff and also praised the involvement of the local community in making the project a success. The assembly finished with a wonderful speech by Helen all about the significance of the children’s place within their local community and how their own contributions continue from those made by former residents. RE Calendar Competition

William Patten children took part in a borough

wide poster competition in the Autumn term

arranged by the Learning Trust. The aim of this

competition was to raise awareness of religions

and worldviews throughout the borough in such a

way that children were able to express what they

had learnt or experienced about religions and

beliefs through art, based around particular

themes. We are pleased to say that SIX of our

children were selected as overall winners in

Hackney. Their work will feature in the RE

Calendar 2018 – 2019, which will be produced in

the Summer term. A copy of the calendar will be

sent to every school in the borough, and each

winner will receive a copy from their schools’ RE

Coordinator. Well done to Cleo French, Kezia

Year 5 continued their science work on Thursday

by visiting Petchey Academy for a mission to Mars!

Following an explosive show from the Science

Museum, they made rockets and were helped to

launch them into space by Petchey Academy sixth

formers. On Friday, they were treated to another

Science Museum show and participated in an

assembly on careers in science and engineering.

Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who

accompanied us on our trip.

Playing football in Barcelona by Alexandru,

Jack and Malik 4H

During the Easter holidays, 10 children from William

Patten travelled with our football team ‘London

Soccer Stars’ to Barcelona, Spain for a football

tournament. We stayed for three nights and the

tournament lasted two full days (we played lots of

matches!). 17 teams from across Europe took part

and by the end of it, the four teams representing

London Soccer Stars had performed extremely well.

The under 9’s finished 9th and the under 10’s

finished 5th and 6th. We visited Camp Nou and every

player received a medal. It was the best holiday

ever!!

Years 1, 2 and 3 had an exciting afternoon on

Tuesday with Chain Reaction Theatre

Company. They got to watch four actors perform

covers of famous pop songs as well as teaching

them about being careful which substances you

put into your body. The children were all really

engaged and were able to talk about who you

should speak to if you're unsure what medicine to

take, and the appropriate doses, as well as how

healthy eating benefits our bodies.

William Patten children joined schools across the

borough to design ‘Walk to School’ badges based

on the seasons.

Caring for cats

Nursery, Reception, Years 1 and 2 had a visit from Jonathan who works for the North London branch of the Cats Protection. The children listened to a PowerPoint and story about caring for cats. Throughout the session, they were confident to express their ideas, share their own experiences of having pets at home, as well as talking about the illustrations in the book about finding a forever home for a kitten. After the session, children enjoyed making their cat masks as well as talking to each other about caring for their pets.

Run Hackney preparations have been coming along very well at William Patten! The children who entered (from Years 5 & 6) have been busy ramping up their required mileage in advance of the half marathon itself, taking place on Sunday May 20th. Jim, Jon and Brodie have been impressed with the children's running progress, enthusiasm and commitment to the event. More information from school will follow soon, and special t-shirts for the day will be making their way to entrants in due course. Those who have signed up, make sure to be free on 20.5.18! We are all looking forward to it!

Benjamin, a local artist and resident will be running a

design workshop for young people (age 8+) at the Old

Fire station on the 12th of May from 10am-12pm.

‘This design and DIY initiation session engages with

simple everyday objects and proposes to revisit them

in a fun way. Our hands on approach gives young

people a taste for experimentation and making by

developing mini design projects’.
