WHEN DO WE USE IT?It is used when the action is more important than the person/thing that performed it.It is more frequent in scientific and journalistic style.• Rob buys the newspaper every day. (ACTIVE)

• The newspaper is bought (by Rob) every day. (PASSIVE)

WHEN DO WE USE IT?• When the agent is unknown:

Flats are sold every day in Spain.• When the agent is not important:

The museum can be visited from 8 to 12.• When we want to give importance to the object of the active voice:

America was discovered in 1492.

HOW DO WE FORM A PASSIVE SENTENCE?

VERB CHANGES: TO BE + PAST PARTICIPLE (same verbal tense of the active

sentence)

Columbus discovered America in 1492

America was discovered by Columbus in 1492.

FORM: TWO OBJECTS --- TWO POSSIBLE SENTENCES IN THE PASSIVE VOICE

If the object is a pronoun, make sure to change it to a subject pronoun: me I him he her she them they us we

I bought him a present. (ACTIVE)

He was bought a present. (PASSIVE)

A present was bought to him. (PASSIVE)
