Welcome to the first SLiNK of 2016. This issue is all about PASSION and we think it is the perfect way to kick off another year. Since SLiNK started 5 years ago, we have been passionate about showing plus size fashion in the most fashion forward way possible. We have worked with amazing people to show the fashion industry that plus size women want and deserve fashion and on trend pieces. As we reach this first mini milestone we are pleased to share this issue with other women who are passionate about their chosen fields. From championing body posi-tivity and showing that age is just a number, to those tirelessly campaigning to improve the health, rights and lives of others. Passion is the fire that drives us all forward to embark on another year and look to mak-ing it the best one yet. I want to take this opportunity to welcome new team members Jenny Morrell on Beauty and Perelandra Beedles on Features who I know are both excited to bring passion to their new roles. We hope that you find this issue inspiring and uplifting and we hope it reignites your fire to be passionate this year and to channel that energy to improving and uplifting others. A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Page 6: The Passion Issue, SLiNK #19

Get to know the brand that is PASSIONATE about getting plus size on the high street!

The History...Yours Clothing started from humble begin-nings. Owner Andrew Killingsworth started selling plus size fashion from a market stall in the early 1990’s. He then noticed there was a gap in the market for plus size fashion on the high street and started opening stores in 1997 as “Size Up.” The brand name was changed to Yours Clothing in 2001 and their e-commerce site was launched in 2008. In 25 years, Yours has established itself as the fastest growing plus size retailer in the UK

More Stores Coming Soon!“We work with a franchise partner in the Middle East where we have 11 stores cur-rently- 2 in Bahrain, 2 in Saudi Arabia, 1 in Qatar, 5 in UAE including Dubai. We have plans to open a further 10 in 2016 across the Middle East with our franchise partner. We also plan to expand our fran-chise partners globally too. In addition to franchise stores, we also have 27 active wholesale partners who operate every-where from Israel to Finland to Australia.”

Their USPYours Clothing offer fashion-able plus size clothing up to a size 36 at affordable prices. They also offer plus size ma-ternity wear, something which their competitors aren’t doing, and plus size menswear going from Sizes M to 8XL. Yours Clothing also ship to over 200 countries including Australia and America! So there is no excuse - get shopping!

They’ve collaborated with Tess Holliday & Hayley Hasselhoff“We will be working with plus size model and blogger Nadia Aboulhosn on our upcoming Botanical jungle trend and also a range of international plus size bloggers on different campaigns. We feel it is important to work with both models and bloggers; they are a credit to the plus size industry and they are constantly campaigning for body positivity. For example, Tess with #effyourbeautystan-dards. Their confidence is extremely inspiring to many plus size women.”

They have ambition“We want to be the number one best value plus size menswear and womens-wear brand, we want to have 120 stores by 2020. Not only do we want to be the best value plus size retailer in the UK but internationally too. We hope to have more franchise stores internationally and expanded our wholesale partnerships.”

You can actually shop in store“Yours Clothing started out as a store offering back in the nineties and the web was added in 2008. We want to make our clothing accessible to as many customers as possible and are always looking to open more stores to broaden our reach. We find having a store presence helps increase our awareness and we are happy to serve our customers whichever method they choose to shop with us. We now have 85 stores in the UK. Our customers want to shop in store as well as the internet and we want to give them that choice. We don’t open stores to show other brands what to do, only what our customers want”.

Who is the Yours Customer?“We have 3 customer types - Young Free and Single, - Older Sister and - Forever 40. The Young Free & Single customer is aged between 18-25 & is very fashion conscious & wants to dress like her friends. The Older Sister is big sister to the Young Free & Single customer & tends to be in a relationship, with children; therefore, comfort & value are the most important factors when buying clothes to fit in with her busy lifestyle. The Forever 40 customer is the mother of customers 1 and 2 and shops regularly for wardrobe basics and high quality clothing, she is also our most loyal customer.”

Yours Clothing #AllYours - Yours Clothing want to represent YOU and recently did a fab blogger / model search!“As our clothing starts at size 14 and goes up to a size 36, we think it is really important that all sizes are represented and customers have the chance to see how our clothing looks on real women. Hence why we worked with Size 24 Tess Hol-liday and a range of bloggers from size 14 up to a size 32. Our model search to find four real women for our TV advert was extremely successful; we had over 3,000 entrants! There was no height or dress size limit, it was open to everyone! The win-ners ranged from size 16 to size 26. We like to celebrate confidence and fashion and we felt our Fashion Freedom is #AllYours winners embodied this. We hope to run more model searches in the future as we find them to be extremely successful.”

“We like to promote a positive & comfortable experience for our customers. We are proud about what we do & want to do it well. We have a number of positive statements around our store: the talking button in the fitting rooms is just one example.”

SHOPPING

Page 10: The Passion Issue, SLiNK #19

The Geneva dress is my top pick for an outfit to take from the office to after work drinks. I love the bold blue and ivory print which feels summery and fresh, and perfectly complemented by the sophisticated design. I’d wear it with a jacket in the office, lose the jacket and add a statement neck-lace for cocktail hour. (Generva Dress £99)

I love these monochrome stripes. The Janet top is casual but totally chic. I’d pair it with jeans, sneakers and a chunky necklace for a chilled weekend vibe. (Janet Top £55)

Depending on what you pair the Persia skirt with it’ll work for day and night, and with a range of colours. I love the shape of this skirt - it’ll create a wonderful silhou-ette and look cute with pumps or heels. (Persia Skirt £75)

The royal purple chevron design of this chiffon beauty is striking and classy. I love the purple panel that draws you in at the waist, creating a great shape. I’d keep the accessories simple, in gold, and let this beautiful dress do all the talking at a spe-cial occasion. (Brooklyn Dress £160)

I love how this basic black tunic has been updated with satin and zip trimming to give it a more modern look. It’s a flirty length for the summer, and I can imagine wearing it on holiday somewhere hot with sandals, or on weekends with leggings and flats. (Lisa Tunic £110)

The LBD that you can dress up or down - I love the satin trims and the gold details of this tunic and you could easily wear this for a day at work or a night on the razz! (Lisa Tunic £110)

I spotted this dress at the Studio 8 Press Day and fell in love. This intricate lace dress is so beautiful and I’d style it with patent brogues, killer eyeliner and brushed out curls. (Verona Dress £110)

A jumpsuit is a fab alternative to a dress and I love how versatile they are. You could wear this jumpsuit with heels or your favourite trainers for the perfect casual look. (Langley Jumpsuit £99)

Beth Ditto

The label to love right now

Never one to shy away from the limelight Beth is no stranger to high fashion having previously strut her stuff on the runway for the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs. There was even a collaboration collection with Evans back in 2012.All this has stood Beth in good stead to launch her very own collection, under her own name, which is stocked exclusively in Selfridges and on www.bethditto.comThe collection emulates Beth’s bold style, through colourful geometric prints, forties

silouhettes and vintage denim vibes. We love the lip print looks, which are bold and fun but equally never out of date. The easy to wear jersey pieces are great for layering and all the clever pleat detailing creates a gorgeous silhouette. With wardrobe classics like the embroidered denim jacket, Beth’s collection is joining a legion of new indie, higher end plus size designer offerings and we can’t wait to see what happens next. Little did I know that she considers writing the show as a pivotal time in her journey to who she has become. Like many women, she struggled with body image, self-hatred and obsessively trying every fad diet. The California native described a darker time hating her body as a young student

at NYU. “I did all of the diets… Atkins, calorie counting, Weight Watchers…all of them! Then I thought, Is it worth living like this? Is it worth feeling every day like a such a failure for not getting down to 125 at 5’8?”

Growing up with this body dysmorphia that so many of us are brainwashed to feel, tragically led Elizabeth to struggle with eating disorders up until adulthood. “It was when I was writing my one woman show around 2005, that I performed for many years after, that things started to change in my mind. As opposed to feeling

bad about myself, I started to feel mad at society for making me feel that way when in actuality I was average weight for my height and size”, Elizabeth explains while sip-ping a passion fruit margarita.

“I read “The Beauty Myth” by Naomi Wolf which was a feminist critique of the diet industry. That was a turning point for me… I didn’t want to be a pawn for them any more.” And that she wasn’t. From that

point on Elizabeth took her new lease on life and her passion for fashion and turned it into a career. At one point she even caught the attention of television networks when she was got a development deal for a reality show. Sadly the deal wasn’t something Elizabeth

She’s an actress/model/designer/body image guru. She is a favourite by count-less major plus designers including Melissa McCarthy and Jessica Simpson. She calls Camryn Manheim a BFF and mentor. She is a face of Pinup Girl Clothing and has just released a line of jewellery and dresses under their brand. Despite being born with a name already made very famous, she’s had a long and wind-ing road towards self-love and suc-cess. Her name is Elizabeth Taylor and there seems to be no stopping her now.I first met Ms. Taylor several years ago when she was making waves in NYC with her show, ‘Finding Elizabeth Taylor’. She was confident, gregarious and wearing an outra-geous red dress - my kind of person. In addition to her namesake, her fashion icons are Sophia Loren, Diana Vreeland and Iris Apfel, so as you can imagine, this Liz Taylor never looks anything less than flat-out fierce. At that moment, I would have guessed that she was born with unshakeable self-esteem.

“I was told that if it’s a ‘plus size show’ it has to be about weight loss…

They could not conceive of the idea of a woman being fat, happy and fashionable.”

The world doesn’t need one more example of

plus-size women being bullied into

“improving” themselves.

We need more role models who show that fashion can be a celebration of your body,

was willing to put her name on. “I was told that if it’s a ‘plus size show’ it has to be about weight loss… They could not conceive of the idea of a woman being fat, happy and fashionable.”

The world doesn’t need one more example of plus-size women being bul-lied into “improv-ing” themselves. We need more role models who show that fashion can be a celebration of your body, no mat-ter your size”. And Elizabeth is happy to fill that role.

“I fell into fashion while trying to heal myself,” she said. In the process of heal-ing herself, she has had the opportu-nity to heal others by letting them know that they are not alone. “Laura Byrnes (Pinup Girl Clothing Founder and Designer) told me, “do a virtual one-woman show. Don’t be afraid if you lose a few followers for being honest. Your people will find you.”

This inspired her to start using social media to open up about very personal, intense stories of her youth and her struggle with eating disorders. Since then hundreds of young women have sought her out on Instagram to thank her for sharing her painful past, so that they can overcome their difficult present and find a happier future.

Some plagued by eating disorders sadly never make it to see that happier future. Elizabeth has spoken to many fellow survivors, but last year was the first time she was approached by parents of a 35-year old woman who had succumbed to the disease. “I had just left a huge photo

shoot and ran straight from the taxi into this fundraiser for their foundation - a very sombre event, and the parents got everyone’s attention and said, “here she is.” So, there Elizabeth was, standing in

a room full of people who are intimately affected by eating disorders and looking to her as an inspirational survivor.

She began to read from a piece she wrote called “10 Things I Couldn’t Do If I Still Had My Eating Disorder.” She also shared some of her wisdom on how she overcame the once-insurmountable pressure to be thin,“The idea that this was not my prob-lem, but society’s problem was my key.”

If she hadn’t found a way through the darkness, she never would have been around to experience some one of her most empowering moments like in July 2015.

“After a shoot for Pinup Girl Cloth-ing, they took me upstairs to show me the first samples of my dress that I designed.

It was an out of body experience. I thought, ‘What is better than this?!’” she gushed. Today anyone can buy The Venus Dress and her Legacy Work jewellery collection online.

In the near future, Elizabeth will be launching her site, www.LegacyWork.nyc and working on a new, glamorous resort wear line for plus size women inspired by her fa-vourite city, Miami.Elizabeth Taylor is a survivor, in more ways than one.

She has picked her-self up many times and kept stepping forward towards her dreams.

I hope her undying passion for change and the plus-size fashion revolution will inspire many more women to find the courage to take those first steps towards a new society.

In a clear, strong voice she said to me, “The way I see it, of all the industries out there, more change is happening for women faster in fashion - even more so than in Hollywood. And I know it’s my destiny to be where the change is.”

EASY PEASY roasted Lamb Shoulder

Ingredients:- 1 large bunch fresh rosemary- 2 kg quality shoulder of lamb- 1 chopped red onion- 2 celery stalks- Olive oil- Sea salt- Freshly ground black pepper- 1 bulb garlic , unpeeled, broken into cloves

Preheat your oven to full heat. Slash the fat side of the lamb all. Lay half the sprigs of rosemary and half the garlic cloves on the bottom of a high-sided roasting tray, rub the lamb all over with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place it in the tray on top of the rosemary and garlic, and put the rest of the rosemary and garlic on top of the lamb.

Add the chopped red onion and celery stalk to the tray, these will flavour the gravy nicely.Tightly cover the tray with tinfoil and place in the oven. Turn the oven down to 170°C/325°F/gas 3 and cook for 4 hours – it’s done if you can pull the meat apart easily with two forks.Remove the lamb from the oven and place it on a chopping board. Cover it with tinfoil, then a tea towel, and leave it to rest for 10 minutes before servingDrain all the juice from the tray and keep it in a jug as delicious gravy. I like having large groups of friends over for a Sunday lunch so I usually buy 2 lamb shoulders and simply double the other ingredients. You don’t have to fuss with this dish, just leave it in the oven and let it slowly cook. The better the cuts of meat the better the flavours. You can serve the lamb with potatoes of your choice and roasted vegetables.

“Welcome to my fourth ‘healthy eating’ column with SLiNK magazine. Spring is here and for me that signifies Easter, lamb and gorgeous roasted vegetables. This issue I shall share with you the easiest fool proof lamb dish you can imagine. Try, taste and let me know what you think. Love, Anna” @annascholz #annaskitchen

ASOS for anything trend led, and navabi for investment pieces.

What’s your biggest fashion faux par?

Close call between crocs and uggs, but I’m going to go with crocs… if Monday were a shoe, it would 100% be a pair of crocs!

What’s your first fashion memory?

My first fashion memory is from when I was around 4/5, living in Dubai. My parents were going out to some sort of event, and my mum wore the most incredible full length, fully beaded black dress. I was completely fascinated by it. I still remember touching the beads, and looking up thinking how beautiful and glamorous she looked.

Where do you draw fashion inspiration from?

I draw a lot of fashion inspiration from

fellow bloggers - Callie Thorpe (From the Corners of the Curve), Nicolette Mason and Chastity Garner-Valentine to name a few.

What’s been your ultimate fashion bargain?

A Mulberry summer bag I bought at Bicester Village for £100 from £600 a few years ago!

Your most expensive buy and was it worth it?

My Mulberry Bayswater bag, 100% worth it, will still be wearing it for years to come.

Do you pay attention to fashion shows and season’s trends or write your own rules?

I do a bit of both. I pick and choose the trends I like from each season, take inspiration from runway shows and then infuse them into my own style to make them work for me.

If you were to give us one piece of fashion advice what would it be?

To clear out your wardrobe before the beginning of each season. That way you can clearly see what you do and don’t need to buy, and make room for your new pieces!

What do you think the biggest misconception in fashion is?

The biggest misconception in fashion - I believe - is that we all fit into specific body shapes (for example - triangle, square) .You don’t have to wear that top because it’s ‘suitable for a pear’, or those jeans because they ‘flatter an apple’, wear what you want to wear regardless of the label that has been assigned to your body!
