The Gift of Lent

Every year the Church gives to us an extended time of

fasting, prayer and almsgiving. A total of 40 days (in case you

like details… the 40 days adds up as follows: Ash

Wednesday until the Wednesday of Holy week). Sundays

are not added into the 40-day count as they are mini Easter

celebrations. The reason why the Church celebrates the

solemn time of Lent every year is to help the faithful prune

their lives from things that are not helping them with their

own walk of discipleship. This is just how life works, is it

not? Over time we collect things that are not important.

Any walk through a closet, “junk drawer,” garage or storage

area will remind us that we have a whole bunch of stuff that

we just accumulated over the years. If this is true in the

physical parts of our lives, couldn’t it also happen in the

spiritual parts of our lives too, where we just collect things

that are cluttering our souls?

The Gospel of John has a discourse that is found only in his

Gospel called Jesus’ farewell discourse, which occurs at the

last supper, as Jesus is speaking with his disciples. Within

chapters 13 through 17 of John’s Gospel, we get many of the

passages that mean so much to us Christians. Right dab in

the middle we have John 15. In this passage, Jesus is giving

his disciples the imagery of us being like branches and He is

the vine. He then tells his disciples: “Every branch that bears

fruit he prunes, to make it bear more fruit” (John 15:2).

Thus, before our Lord undergoes his Passion, he is

reminding them that there is going to be some suffering,

some pruning, but it is all for a purpose: BEARING FRUIT!

This, my brothers and sisters, is what is at the heart of every

Lenten discipline. It is to prune, to get rid of the spiritual

clutter that we have in our lives so that new fruit can come

forth. Just think about this analogy. If a bush or shrub gets

out of control it just looks like a rat’s nest of branches and

leaves. However, if it is pruned in the fall, come the spring it

looks so lush, fresh, and well sculpted. The same is true

with our souls. Without some intentional pruning our souls

resemble more of a rat’s nest than a sanctuary for the Most

High.

To simply allow these 40 days to be for us an opportunity to

prune areas in our lives like media use, consumption of food

and drink, spending of money, idle chatter, and simply

wasting time on things that don’t matter, we will see come

Easter, a dramatic increase of fruit and freedom. I fully

realize that this bulletin article comes out a week already

into Lent, but to take it to heart and really try to actively

engage the remaining 30 some days of Lent, will be totally

worth the effort. If you are looking for practical ideas on

how or what to prune, just google “good ideas for Lent by

Lifeteen.” There are 25 suggestions that are really creative

and effective.

Pray on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Trace Christ’s final days in Jerusalem, from the Garden of Gethsemane to walking the Way of the Cross, to climbing the hill of Calvary to where Christ was crucified and laying your hands on the slab where his body was prepared for burial. Witness the miracle of the resurrection as we pray inside his very tomb.

Space is limited to 47 pilgrims. Estimated cost $4,000 per person.

THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUS

God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice,

which would have been a partial burning with the meat

divided between God and the people and eaten by those who

sacrificed, but for a holocaust, a total burning of the sacrificial

animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire offering

to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in

offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his

obedience, that was enough. This story from today’s

scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of

the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God’s

own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist.

Abraham’s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to

God’s promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is

rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations.

The obedience of Jesus is rewarded in the salvation of all

people for all time.
