Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 9-10, 2019

A Note from Our Pastor,

I am sure many of us are still rejoicing in the victory of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII. Last Tuesday the day when the Pats had their victory parade, we celebrated in the

Church Year the victory of our patroness St. Agatha, as she remained steadfast and faithful to her commitment as a vir-gin to Christ and refused the unwanted overtures of a wealthy Roman pagan. As a result she was tortured horribly and eventually died in prison. Agatha’s victory of fidelity to the Lord is a tribute to the power of Christ’s grace at work in her life, but also a testimony to her faith in and deep love for Christ, and her own courage and valor. And wow, do we need those virtues in our own lives today! St. Agatha, pray for us here, as a parish and a school, under your watchful care. Please also offer your powerful intercession for breast-cancer victims, rape victims, people young and old who strive to remain chaste in the single state, in marriage, wid-ows and widowers, consecrated religious, deacons, priests, and bishops. In the complicated and often challenging times in which we live, ask the Lord that we may be blessed with even a small dose of your faithfulness, courage, and deep and abiding love for Christ.

This weekend we celebrate World Marriage Day and ask God that all the graces of the Sacrament of Matrimony may flow in abundance for the married couples in our parish community, for their families, and for our society which desperately needs the strong witness that those married in Christ provide by their love and faithfulness to their marriage vows.

This weekend the St. Agatha Respect Life Committee is holding its annual Baby Shower in the Gathering Space from 4 until 6pm on Saturday and from 8:30am until 1:30pm on Sunday. Please come for coffee, cake, and con-versation, and consider donating baby clothes and all the other necessities of life for newborn babies and their moth-ers, gift certificates, or cash. All gifts will be gladly re-ceived and put to good use! Our generous and loving re-sponse to aid expectant mothers and mothers of newborn babies in need will serve as a striking contrast to the ex-treme death-dealing legislation coming from some east-coast state legislatures recently.

You’ll note in our bulletin the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. Pope Francis has asked us to pray for St. Michaels’ intercession in anticipation of the meeting in the Vatican later this month to address the clergy sex-abuse cri-sis. Please offer this prayer for all the victims of these hei-nous crimes, and for wisdom and courage for all participants at this meeting to formulate and carry out a thorough and comprehensive response from the Church throughout the world to rid the Church of this plague, and to remove from ministry all perpetrators and enablers of such evil.

On a happier note, I have been asked by some folks who wor-ship at our weekday 9 o’clock Mass to include in my column

something I mentioned in my homily a week ago Wednesday about Jesus’ parable of the sower and the seed. It comes from Mark Link, S.J., Jesus 2000: A Contemporary Walk with Jesus (Allen, Texas, Thomas More, 1997), page 185:

Sow seed that will yield a joyful harvest. First, sow three rows of pea seed: Patience Perseverance Prayerfulness. Second, plant three rows of squash seed: Squash anger. Squash criticism. Squash gossip. Third, plant three rows of lettuce seed: Let us be unselfish. Let us be forgiving. Let us be loving. Finally, you’ve got to sow turnip seed! Turn up with a ready hand. Turn up with a gentle smile. Turn up with a listening heart. Pick a vegetable from each row that you need to eat more of for better health.

Happy Gardening! And have a blessed week!

Bereavement Group to Start

Have you lost a loved one recently? Are you grieving a friend or family member who passed several years ago? Coping with the loss of a close friend or family member may be one of the hardest challenges that many of us face. Please don’t go it alone. Join in a support group to walk with others who are grieving and to gain tools to help you in the grieving process.

This eight-week group will be facilitated by Licensed Certified Mental Health counselor, Mrs. Linda Garvey-Dickey and Pastoral Associate, Lisa M. Gulino. Please register with Kathy Monahan (617-698-2439).

The group will be gathering in the meeting room in the Lower Church after the 9am Daily Mass on Thursdays beginning Feb-ruary 21st. The approximate start time is 9:35am until 11am.

THE WEEKLY UPDATE

THEME: We are continually invited to follow Jesus.

As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike you? What image comes to mind from this reading?

Gospel : Luke 5:1-11

While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that the boats were in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

Pastoral Planning

February 10 ~ Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus invites the disciples who have been fishing all night to “put out into the deep…” Despite their fatigue, they do as Jesus asks because they have faith in him. He not only rewards them with a large catch of fish, but he instructs them to be fishers of men (and women). Today Jesus in-vites us to take a leap of faith, to take to heart his words that we are to reach out to others and draw them to Christ. To whom will you reach out to in faith?

The Grand Annual Appeal is winding to a close. Thank you so much to the 415 households who have responded thus far, contributing a total of $164, 807. This total is just over $5,000 short of our budgeted goal of $170,000. If you would still like to make a contribution to help us meet this target it would be greatly appreciated.

Last week we mailed out nearly 800 Annual Contribu-tion Statements to parishioners who contributed to the parish in 2018. We are so grateful for your support and realize that for many people their contributions repre-sent an extra sacrifice. We did learn that a small number of the statements were slightly inaccurate due to an er-ror in the contribution software we use which caused a few contributions to be omitted and a few to be dupli-cated. We immediately corrected each error, double-checked the annual totals and mailed out corrected statements to those affected. The vast majority of the statements were not affected, but if yours was one of those few that was, you should have received a correct-ed statement. We apologize for the inconvenience and can assure you that we have taken measures to insure that this does not re-occur in the future.

Psychologist Abraham Maslow noted that few people leave all to follow a dream—or to pursue a noble goal. Maslow proposed, “they are afraid to become what they are capable of becoming. They thrill at the possibility, but they also shudder at it.” I think Maslow’s considerations are applicable to our readings today.

Our three readings today speak of God surprising Isaiah, Paul, and Simon (later called Peter) and summoning each to enter into relationship and service. For Isaiah he heard the Lord: “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah’s first response was fear yet God quelled his fear enough for Isaiah to respond with great generosity: “Here I am… send me!”

Jesus calls to Simon: “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon’s response is obedience, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” See-ing the catch, Simon recognized Jesus’ greatness. Fearful Simon pulls away from Jesus, “Depart from me for I am a sinful man.” Jesus responds: “Be not afraid” This trust in Jesus’ word netted for Simon not only a large catch of fish but a new life. Both Isaiah and Simon pursued the One who would help them to become their best self and accept-ed God’s invitation to do great things.

Pope Benedict XVI once asked: “Are we not perhaps all afraid in some way? If we let Chr ist enter fully into our lives, if we open ourselves totally to him, are we not afraid that He might take something away from us?”

Pope Benedict XVI reassures us, “If we let Christ into our lives, we lose nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great. No! Only in this friendship are the doors of life opened wide. Only in this friendship is the great potential of human existence truly revealed.” How do I respond to the thought of stepping out in faith and following Jesus more closely? Be surprised by God for God wants us to become who we were created to be—fully alive!
