A NEW ASSOCIATE FOR ST. JAMES CHURCH I am awaiting confirmation of the assignment of Fr. Francis Sarpong as the new associate here at St. James parish. I don’t expect him to begin his work until sometime in October. Fr. Francis Sarpong, who is from Ghana, is in the process of completing the paper work that he needs in order to be granted a Visa to work here in the United States. Please pray for Fr. Francis during this time. I am sure that we will give him the same warm welcome that has been extended to each priest who has come here to serve. As I receive further information I will pass it on to you in the weeks ahead. * * * * * * * * * * * *

“AS WE BEGIN A NEW PARISH YEAR. . .” I am delighted to be back from my summer vacation and annual retreat. It was good to catch up with family and friends, to have time for some additional reading, travel and, yes, even some sleep. Having the opportunity to spend time at the Cenacle Retreat Center in Ronkonkoma was a wonderful occasion for spiritual renewal as I now enter the tenth year serving as the pastor of St. James Parish. While I was away the parish center classrooms were cleaned and readied for our Faith Formation Program and other meetings and gatherings. One of the summer storms took down a large branch of one the trees in front of the parish center, which required a company to come in to clear the area. We also had some low standing branches of several of the trees by the front entrance of the church trimmed to protect cars usually parked in that area. September will begin a number of important activities and events, which will be held here at St. James. Among them are: This weekend, September 15th: Catechetical Sunday. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops offers the following description of this year’s celebration: ”The 2019 theme will be "Stay With Us." Those parishioners, who the Community has designated to serve as catechists, will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. September 29th: “Fifth Annual Blue Mass” honoring all police officers, firefighters and other first responders. Once again, we want to recognize the contributions these men and women give to us through their generous service. I hope that if you are a police officer, firefighter or first responder that you will join us, together with your families and friends, at the 12:30 PM Mass that day. We are honored that Bishop Richard Henning will be the celebrant and preacher at this special Mass. October 5th: “The Annual Blessing of Animals” by the Shrine to our Blessed Mother at 1:00 PM. I am in the process of setting a new date for the Blessing of Back Packs, which was originally scheduled for this Sunday.
FAREWELL, FR. MELCHIZEDEK! We want to express our sincerest words of gratitude to you, Fr. Melchizedek. We were delighted to have you with us once again this summer. You moved us by your passionate preaching and the devout manner in which you celebrated the Mass. We hope that you enjoyed your time with us and have pleasant memories to bring back with you. We wish you God’s blessings, especially, as you continue your studies in Rome. Again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

What’s happening in
Faith Formation?
I was reading this week’s gospel and Jesus was explaining to the Pharisees and
Scribes about how things that seem lost are really not. They come back to you, if
you have a bit of patience. Many people when returning home rejoice, just like the
dad of the son who was lost and is now back. The father threw a huge party for his
son, picked out the best food, got him a new outfit. He was so happy to have him
back. I, as you know, have just gotten back from vacation. When I arrived, I felt
just like being the prodigal son. Every time I come home, they are so happy that I’m
back; my mom goes all out making my favorite dishes and my dad always wants to
know what I need. God is the same way. He is so happy every time we step into his
house, even if we have been gone a long time. It has been almost three months since
our students have been in class for Faith Formation. We are excited to welcome
them back with open arms; we don’t have a fatted calf, but we do have books,
Bibles, and teachers who are ready to share their faith, so, Welcome Home.

Remembering and Caring for our Senior Priests
Do you ever think about a favorite Pastor or Parish Priest and wonder how they are and where they may be living?
Well, for our Senior Priests who are living at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility in Amityville, life is good and sometimes very busy.
“We are very happy that more and more of our Priests are taking advantage of this wonderful facility. We thank you for your support, we depend on it, especially now with the increasing costs we are experiencing. We couldn’t do it without you!”
- Rev. Msgr. Thomas Costa, Vicar for Senior Priests
“Since I arrived at St. Pius X, I have found living here like being at home. I have found much happiness with my fellow priests and in the entire community, and I especially appreciate the support I receive. Thank you for helping to make this home possible.”
- Rev. Msgr. T Peter Ryan
Even in retirement our senior priests retain roles as our shepherds, and St. Pius X enables these dedicated men who live there to be fully engaged members of the community. “Still on duty,” they serve as our teachers, counselors, and spiritual leaders.
The special collection for retired priests living at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility will take place next weekend. Please be as generous as possible! Thank You!
