PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

Resurrection-Ascension Church is a diverse community that gathers together to celebrate the Eucharist. We

recognize that the Lord is the source of all that we have and all that we do. We hope that through our sharing of the Eucharist, the Sacraments, and our belonging to the parish – we may obtain a deeper relationship with the Lord.

As a people of faith, we are striving to grow in our ability to live out our understanding of “Stewardship” through the sharing of our Time, Talent and Treasure. We trust that, through God’s grace we may reach out to others, welcoming them, while respecting and supporting one another.

need a “time out”. It is also a gesture of consideration for fellow worshippers. For those applicable, please cooperate and feel free to do so.

“Trusting Our Intuition”

As we conclude the “Bread of Life” discourse, (which we have heard from John’s Gospel for the past five weeks), today’s Gospel informs us about those disciples who have chosen to remain with Christ, and others who have found His words too difficult to understand, and to accept. The ones who have been overwhelmed could not comprehend the meaning of the words: “Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no life in you.” The cumulative effect on these words of Jesus during the “Bread of Life” discourse appeared to be too outrageous, too shocking, or just too confusing. As a result, some “turned back” to their former lives and no longer followed Jesus.

The above scenario helps us to wonder also: when something happens that destroys our way of understanding life—where do we go??? Some examples overwhelming us may be: a particular loss, an illness, a betrayal from someone we love and admire deeply…Notably, should these, and other experiences, occur, the “carpet (as the saying goes) seems to get pulled out from under us” and, then, “nothing begins to make sense.”

Fortunately, in today’s Gospel, St. Peter gives us an example to follow. He did not understand (rationally) all that Jesus had stated in reference to those words He used concerning “Spirit and Life” but, Peter followed his intuition when he said: “Where else are we going to go?.....We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God………”. Similarly, this Gospel account may serve as a reminder that we, too, have “come to believe” through parents, the Church, our life experience……. that HE is the Only One we can truly rely on and, our faith helps to foster, and support, that conviction-- which emanates, also, from our hearts.
