A Prayer for the Busy Holiday Season

Father, I want this holiday season to be filled with light instead of darkness.

Please help me discard my emo onal masks and be real before You, as well as my family and friends.

Father, help me make this holiday season an offering of praise to You.

In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Vol. 38, No. 48 November 29, 2020 First Sunday of Advent

From the Desk of Fr. Lakmin Silva

W e have now arrived at the first Sunday of the Season of Advent. The word “advent” is derived from the La n word “adventus,” which means “coming.” And, to be more precise, it is the season of prepara on for the coming of Christ, which is cele-brated as His birthday on Christmas Day. This season lasts for four weeks and is set aside to contemplate what the coming of Christ means to the world and to each of us. So, during this season, we are invited to reflect on the coming of the Son of God in human form, as the babe in the manger, and His coming into the lives, hearts, and ac ons of those who accept Him as their Savior. We also contemplate His fu-ture coming, when Jesus will return to the Earth as a King who comes to judge and rule the whole universe. Hence, the theme of Scripture readings and teachings during Advent prepare us for the Second Coming while also commemora ng the First Coming of Christ at Christmas. We celebrate with gladness the great promise in Advent, yet we know there is also a somber tone as threat is added to the theme of promise. This is reflected in some of the Scripture readings for Advent, in which there is a strong pro-phe c tone of accountability and judgment on sin.

However, this is also faithful to the role of the Coming King who comes to rule, save, and judge the world. Historically, the primary sanctuary color of Advent is purple. This is the color of penitence and fas ng as well as the color of royalty to welcome the advent of the King. It is the color of hope. The purple of Advent is also the color of suffering used during Lent and Holy Week. This points to an important connec on between

Jesus’ birth and death. The na vity -- the Incarna on -- cannot be separated from the crucifixion. The purpose of Je-sus’ coming into the world, of the "Word made flesh" and dwelling among us, is to reveal God and His grace to the world not only through Jesus’ life and teaching but also through his suffering, death, and

resurrec on. To reflect this emphasis, Advent origi-nally was a me of penitence and fas ng, akin to the season of Lent. Finally, the meaning, theology, and the tradi ons of Advent remind us that we are not mere spectators of this whole event but ac ve, watchful par cipants. So “Mark the season of Advent by loving and serving others with God’s own love and concern.” (Mother Teresa of Calcu a)

Nex Weekend’s Readings Second Sunday of Advent, Year B

Reading I: Isaiah 40: 1-5, 9-11 These verses open the so-called “Book of Comfort.” We read of the commissioning of the prophet. Later in history, John the Bap st will fulfill Isaiah’s declara on about a “desert voice proclaiming.” Reading II: 2 Peter 3: 8-14 The unknown author (definitely not St. Peter) addresses the cri cism he has heard of God’s providence. He explains “divine me” and His “delay” which is actually His pa ence with sinners. The Gospel: Mark 1: 1-8 This prologue relates for the reader the promises of the Old Testament prophets to the work of John the Bap st and to Jesus as “the coming One.” We also receive a por-trayal of St. John’s humility.

Parish News and Events

If you have a ques on about any aspect of our Catholic Church and faith, contact us and we will answer to the best of our ability. 257. "What are the elements that should be found in our prayer?" When we pray, we should each make a conscious effort to incorporate all the elements of Catholic Chris an prayer which have been taught throughout the history of the church and most re-cently in The Catechism of the Catholic Church. The proper understanding of each element is also important. The tradi on of the Roman Catholic Church highlights four basic elements of prayer: Prayer of Blessing and Adora on, Prayer of Pe on, Prayer of Intercession, and Prayer of Thanksgiving. 1. Blessing and Adora on. In its widest appli-ca ons, the word "blessing" has a variety of mean-ings in sacred wri ngs. It can be taken in a sense that is synonymous with praise; thus, the Psalmist writes, "I will bless the Lord at all mes; praise shall be always in my mouth." The prayer of blessing expresses praise and honor to God and is man's response to God's gi s. Adora on is the first a tude of man acknowl-edging that he is a creature before his Creator. Praise is the form of prayer which recognizes most immediately that God is God. It lauds God for His

own sake and gives Him glory, quite beyond what He does, but simply because He is. 2. Pe on. A prayer of pe on is a re-

quest to God that asks Him to fulfill a need. By prayer of pe on, Catholics acknowledge their dependence on God. This expression is not intend-ed to direct God what to do but to appeal to His goodness for the things we need; and the appeal is necessary, not because He is ignorant of our needs or sen ments, but to give definite form to our de-sires and to help us appreciate our close personal rela on with Him. The expression need not be ex-ternal or vocal; internal or mental is sufficient. The prayer of pe on is, at its heart, an Act of Faith in that the one praying must believe first, in the existence of God and second, that God is both willing and able to grant the pe on. The Cate-chism of the Catholic Church states that asking forgiveness, coupled with trus ng humility, should be the first movement of a prayer of pe on. 3. Intercession. Intercession is a prayer of pe -

on which leads us to pray as Jesus did. He is the one intercessor with the Father on behalf of all men, especially sinners. Intercession is a prayer to God on behalf of another person asking God to assist other people with the things they need. 4. Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving celebrates what God has given and done.

The Castro Family share their thoughts about the Parish and PREP online this year: “We feel so welcome in this parish! Although we are going through a hard me due to the pandemic, the Word of the Lord is helping us. “With the parish community, and Sr. Cora espe-cially, providing the Word of the Lord and weekly livestreaming of Masses for our families, there’s no be er way to experience it! This level of learning

has been like no other, with the church and PREP always available to us -- constant accessibility. “My son is learning in the car, on the go, and in normal conversa ons throughout the day. What a great way for families and God to come together! To our Parish Community...keep up the great work! It is showing in the light that shines through our children. Thank you for teaching and welcoming us! God bless ICA.”

Thanks and Praise for Our Parish and PREP
