Padre’s Corner December 2, 2018 First Sunday of Advent Plato was born around 428 BC in Athens, Greece and departed this world from the same ancient city circa 348 BC. He was a philosopher who studied under Socrates, and was a teacher of Aristotle. His writings explored the fields of theory, theology, beauty, politics, culture, and among many others justice. Plato was the inspiring force behind the Academy in Athens, one of the original academic institutions created in the Western World. Individuals like Plato laid the groundwork for later intellectual life in academia, the forebears of the modern educational systems that we have all benefited from. In the seminary system my classmates studied ancient philosophers like Plato, including his widely influential classic book the “Republic“. In chapter or book eight, the cave represents the human search between the light of truth and the darkness of sin. His characterization is that all people are living in such a metaphorical cave at some point in life, captured by the shadows of idolatry and addiction. Inherent within each person is the contrary positive impulse of wanting to escape these existences of illusions, by looking outward or upward to the light of hope that beckons all toward the top of the cave to escape into the sunshine and rays of truth. Chains of bondage in human or emotional form desire to pull the potential escapees backwards into the paths of despair and disillusionment. There within lies the epic individual battle with freedom versus slavery. At this point Plato reflects: “Suppose, that someone should drag him by force, up the rough ascent, the steep way up, and never stop until he could drag him out into the light of the sun. Slowly, his eyes adjust to the light of the sun. First he can see only shadows. Gradually he can see the reflections of people and things in water and then later see the people and things themselves. Eventually, he is able to look at the stars and moon at night until he can finally look upon the sun itself... He would bless himself for the change, and pity the other prisoners and would want to bring his fellow cave dwellers out of the cave and into the sunlight.“ The power of the cave symbolism recently emerged again. On June 23 at a cave within Mae Sai, Thailand twelve soccer teenagers with their coach were celebrating life passages with written expressions of accomplishment on the cave walls. The unpredictable roar of nature struck them almost simultaneously, as monsoon rains flooded the caves and began the reduction of precipitous oxygen levels. Concerned families beckoned government officials to find their loved ones, which led to calls for international assistance of diving professionals to begin the dangerous search with rescue options. Strategically placed oxygen tanks in the murky waters, within razor-thin passages no wider than two feet, was part of the theoretical strategy. The unfolding drama, like the underwater scenes in the 1973 “Poseidon Adventure“ about a capsized cruise ship in Plato’s native land of Greece, necessitated individuals of incredible courage and determination. Such souls were found in these diving rescue forces, determined to lead the operation to the escaping light of the cave as earmarked in Plato’s philosophical novella. There was one casualty when the oxygen tank ran out for a rescuer. I am sure that brave man went straight to Heaven. With the calm reassurances of the coach, once a Buddhist monk (felt the spirituality of that tradition at a temple during my one visit to Hawaii in my past: mystically near a cemetery with a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mother Mary that was in the opening scenes of the “Hawaii Five-O“ television series theme song starting in 1968), and the divers tied to those being saved like the Good Shepherd with the lost sheep, the saving mission was completed on July 10. Shortly after the rescue was completed the main water pump malfunctioned, as if Moses held the biblical waters off long enough as the Israelites were escaping their would-be captors in the Old Testament story. United States Air Force Master Sergeant Derek Anderson, the son of missionaries from Syracuse in New York State, was one of the rescue team that came to the Chiang Rai province in Thailand out of the American military base in Okinawa, Japan. After the successful story was realized, he reflected: “What was really important was the coach and the boys all came together and discussed staying strong, having the will to live, and having the will to survive.“ As the Advent season unfolds and the Christmas season quickly approaches, there is the story of another cave to reflect upon: the one Christ the Newborn King was born into during a dark night. Stars of light were nearby. We think of the perfect mix of Jesus, Plato, and Thailand in the context of hope and dreams as Sacred Heart and Saint Francis of Assisi swim through the murky waters of the future. Next week, in “Padres Corner“, Norman Vincent Peale can teach us through his classic book “The Power of Positive Thinking“. Father Bill

TODAY FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

First Reading: Jeremiah 33:14-16 The Lord tells of fulfilling the promise he had made to Israel. He will send a replacement for David, someone who "shall do what is right and just in the land," believed by most to mean Jesus. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 3:12—4:2 Paul encourages the Thessalonians to be ready for the coming of the Lord. He explains that although they are conducting themselves in a way that would please God, they should always strive to do even better. Gospel: Luke 21:25-28, 34-36 Jesus warns his followers to be prepared for the end of the world. He reminds them not to be preoccupied with unimportant events, or they will be caught unaware rather than being on watch as they should.
