PCC Report and Financial Statementsfor the year ended December 31st 2016

The Annual Vestry gives us the perfect opportunity to reflect on how well we have achieved our aim of working with God to build up his Kingdom in the area served by our parish.Often it can seem as if we are working hard to uphold the institution of the Church rather than to increase its effectiveness as an agent of transformation in the world, but that is a consequence of its being a relatively large, diverse and complex organisation. It is the Anglican philosophy to try and have a physical presence in every community, with that presence usually being symbolised and expressed through the church building. Today there is a need for us to consider how our buildings can be more frequently and effectively used in and by our communities, but it remains the case that our beautiful churches, with their innate sense of peace and tranquillity, are places which many people recognise as being sacred spaces. Nevertheless, our churches are not the Church, and our work must always ultimately have a human focus. The following report gives a summary of many (but not necessarily all) of the activities undertaken in the parish, each of them in their own way contributing to the work of outreach, mutual care or other dimension of the Christian life which we are called to follow.I would like to record my thanks to all those who in any way contribute to the mission and ministry of the local Church – without you so much of what we achieve would not be possible.May God continue to bless us in this coming year. The Reverend Canon Michael Komor, Rector

Thanks to the Parish wardens. Linda Jenkins has completed 6 years of service and should be rightly proud of the many services she has carried out. Sub wardens have carried out their duties with joy and cheer.Mel has taken on the role of treasurer under difficult circumstances. To all PCC members and all the people who carry out roles in all the organisations and services within the Parish. We are grateful to everyone for all they do. The future is likely to see the development of Diocesan Ministry areas. Diocese is keen to develop Ministry areas to suit the requirements of each area. While there is uncertainty how this will develop, our task will be to listen to God’s voice and follow faithfully in his footsteps. 5. Living Faith CourseThe Living Faith group continues to meet fortnightly for our regular bible study. This Year we have been studying the Reshaping Church. This module has taken longer than the others to complete as the subject has many aspects we have found interesting and challenging. The group continue to have lively and interesting discussions around the subject matter, often with as many viewpoints as there are people in the group! As part of the course we paid a visit to Wells Cathedral and will each give a short presentation on our thoughts about it at the end of the course. It is a privilege to lead such a committed and lively group and to see them develop in both knowledge and faith. They have worked through concepts that are challenging to either faith, intellect or both and have come through with a stronger, more mature faith as a result. Well done to all…only one more module to go!Glenda Davies

Coity Church ChoirThe choir continues to lead the worship on Sunday mornings, occasionally at Evensong and Taizé services, and at Mattins once a month, and joined with Nolton choir for the Harvest Festival Evensong in October. The year has been one of sadness and joy. David Sullivan, a much loved and faithful member died after a long illness. He is very much missed by us all.The choir sang at several weddings during the year, the most memorable being the marriage of chorister Mel and churchwarden Glenda in September. Congratulations to them both, it was a privilege to join in their celebrations on such a joyous occasion. In February the choir held their annual dinner at The Old Cottage in Bridgend and, as in previous years, hosted one of the lunches during Lent and Advent. Once again the choir supported the Christmas Tree Festival with a tree depicting the story of the Nativity, and contributed to the music programme on the final day of the festival.During the year the choir has welcomed the return of former choristers Nicole Gravenor and Elizabeth French following completion of university courses. The service of Nine Lessons and Carols on Advent 4 was enjoyed by all. It began as usual with a lantern procession preceded by a tea party in the hall. The soloist at the service was Elizabeth French. The choir is indebted to our regular organists Russell Lock, Hilary Johns and Joanne Blackwell and to Susan Hawthorne for stepping in when required. My personal thanks to the choir and organists for their commitment and support of all our activities and to the clergy and congregation for their encouragement.Mari Dixon

Nolton Church ChoirThe choir continues to sing at Choral Eucharist and Evensong each Sunday through the year and at other services at certain festivals. In 2016 anthems were sung in Lent, Palm Sunday, Easter, Pentecost, Harvest and Remembrance Sunday. The Harvest Evening service was a joint service and the combined choirs of St. Mary, Coity and St. Mary Nolton performed the anthem “Praise the Lord O Jerusalem” by the composer J H Maunder. On Monday 26 September, the choir sang at the special service with members of the Swedish Link Church when the signing of the link took place.Services of Nine Lessons and Carols are the highlight of the year and these were held at Easter and at Christmas. At the Christmas service the choir sang four special items of Christmas music as well as leading all the usual congregational carols. The choir also sang at the Live Music performances of the Tree Festival early in December. The choir dinner was held in October at the Cottage Restaurant in Bridgend and our thanks go to Mrs Karen Phillips who made all the arrangements for this event.I would like to express my thanks to the choir members for their continued support through the year and especially to Father Michael for his involvement, help and encouragement in all that we do for the music of St. Mary Nolton.John Davies

Twinning Link with the Church of SwedenOn 25th and 26th September 2016, we welcomed to the benefice the Rev Fredrik Fagerberg and four lay people (Ivar, Birgitta and Bengt) from our twin parish of Balinge in the Diocese of Uppsala. During a packed couple of days our visitors experienced Messy Church at Nolton, Evensong at Coity, a school Eucharist at AJL and a pub lunch at Coychurch, as well as a visit to Llandaff Cathedral and Cardiff Bay. The visit ended with a special Eucharist at Nolton, during which Fredrik preached and the formal link agreement between the benefice and Balinge was signed. Special thanks are due to Iona and Richard Logan, and Fr Mike and Anne, for hosting our guests; to John Tarran, the staff and children at AJL for their warm welcome; to Peter Craven for helping at Coychurch; and to John Davies and the Nolton choir for leading the singing at the twinning Eucharist. As a visible sign of our new friendship and our commitment to praying for each other, our visitors gave us an icon of the Holy Family which now hangs in Nolton church. It is hoped to organise a return trip to Balinge during 2017, and hopefully this will be the start of a long and happy collaboration between the benefice and our Lutheran friends. Huw Gwyn Jones Benefice Reader

Parish Recorder GroupThe parish recorder groups continue to meet weekly during term time. Our beginners are keen and have progressed to the point where we need to find another name for the group. It has a mix of age ranges, including many children who are learning alongside their parents or grandparents. These players have performed in public on a number of occasions through the year. We are always very pleased to welcome new members.

The more advanced group plays a wide range of music on descant, treble, tenor and bass recorders, and it has been a delight to see members develop their talent over a period of years, to the point where there are some very skilled and able musicians among their number, particularly the younger members.I would like to thank the members for their continued weekly support and also those additional players who help us out for special events. Also, thanks to Elizabeth Mitchell for sitting in as another adult supervisor, and to Jo Blackwell for providing piano accompaniment whenever she is asked.Anne Komor

Mothers’ UnionThe Mothers’ Union branch of this parish remains very strong. There are two meetings a month, the first on the second Thursday with our Corporate Communion service held in Nolton at 10am. This is then followed by fellowship in the Hall. Our second meeting is held on the third Tuesday of the month, in the Dunraven Room in Nolton Hall at 2pm, when we have a speaker or some other items of interest, eg a Quiz, Cream Tea, Harvest Tea, Carols and Readings, and also our annual Day Trip in September. We also now hold a Branch Dinner in a restaurant of our choice. The Bridgend Deanery holds special services during the year. The Deanery Festival is always held at the beginning of May and Advent Service in early December. A minibus is generally hired for these services.Primarily the MU is dedicated to prayer and worship, and to commending Christian ideals of marriage and family life in society. This is not an easy task these days, but it remains one that is worthwhile. We pray that the year ahead will bring many blessings to us as a group, and we do welcome anyone who is interested in joining us.Mary Phillips

Tuesday FellowshipDuring the course of the year Tuesday Fellowship travelled far and wide. In January we experienced Borneo with Charlotte and Peter Komor, in May we cruised the high seas with Ann and Tom Turner and in June Stuart and Trish Davidson shared their experiences of living and working in Papua new Guinea. After the summer break, in October, Natalie Murphy showed photographs of Old Bridgend and, in November, David Rogers told us about the excavations of Roman remains in Llantwit Major. This programme was punctuated by a Lenten service which was followed by Simnel cake and fellowship in the hall and our annual fish and chip supper and AGM in July. Our customary Christmas party in December saw the usual fun and games. The profit from the party enabled us to make a donation to the parish charitable fund. This year we have been pleased to welcome new members. Tuesday Fellowship is open to all. Everyone is warmly welcomed. Thanks to those who help to run our meetings and to those who support month by month.John Dixon

Coity Church Flower ClubOur 2015/ 16 programme was, as usual, varied and interesting. The year commenced with our monthly meeting in January 2016 which involved an informative talk given by Mrs Pam Robson on the subject of ‘Sunlight Soap’. Pam enhanced the talk with the use of slides and the successful evening ended with a raffle and a cup of tea. In February a Spring Practice was held, led by our President - Mrs Mair Cripps. The

ladies followed Mair’s example and devised their own attractive arrangements using a variety of flowers and greenery under her watchful eye. During March we held our Annual Dinner at the Mason’s Arms, Bryncethin. As it was March 1st, we were treated to a typical Welsh menu which we all enjoyed. Some ladies wore traditional Welsh costume.Practice evenings were held in April and May. On Tuesday June 7th we went on our annual excursion- this year to Sudeley Castle where Catherine Parr spent much of her life and was buried in the church on site. This turned out to be a very successful visit as it included a historical venue accompanied by beautiful gardens, a restaurant/ cafe and favourable weather. Everyone agreed they had had a very enjoyable day.The AGM was held in July when a committee was convened and it was decided to continue with our monthly meetings. The committee and members were thanked for their valued support. Donations were made to the hospital in Sierra Leone, Y Bont and Wales Air Ambulance. A rota was devised for ladies to arrange flowers on the altar of Coity church.During our summer break our church warden, Glenda, was married to Mel at Coity Church. Many of the ladies helped to decorate the church for her wedding. When we reconvened in October, new programmes for the next year were distributed. An Autumn practice had been arranged for the evening under the guidance of Mair.As usual we decorated the church for festivals and provided a stall for the Parish Autumn Fayre. For our annual Christmas demonstration we amalgamated with Bridgend Floral Society to hold a special evening at Archbishop McGrath Comprehensive School. Mr Jonathan Lloyd Davies was the very talented demonstrator and he was accompanied on the grand piano by Geraint. Also the opera singer Adele O’Neill entertained us with a variety of songs from the operas. Ladies from both Societies read the Nine Lessons and carols were sung by all. The theme was ‘ O Holy Night’. A Christmas Tree was decorated for the Annual Christmas Tree Festival held in Nolton Church. The year ended with our Christmas party held in Coity Church Hall. Ladies brought either sweet or savoury dishes, carols were sung accompanied by our pianist Barbara and small presents were distributed by ‘Mother Christmas’.We meet on the first Tuesday of the month and new members are always made very welcome. Anne Thomas (Chairlady)

Report on ConferencesDiocesan Conference

The Diocesan Conference was held, as always, at the end of September, but for the first time at the recently re-sited St Teilo’s Church in Wales Secondary School in Cardiff, which proved to be an excellent venue. Many church-based organisations were on hand to display their work, which added interest to a day which encompassed a review of the previous year, statement of accounts, etc. There were also short presentations given about the Evangelism Symposium which some clerical members of Conference had attended earlier in the year, and which will be the focus of the 2017 Diocesan Conference. Two Motions from the Deaneries were considered, one relating to the promotion of church-sponsored counselling services in the deaneries, and the other seeking clarification on how additional funds for missional projects can be accessed. Members then had the opportunity to discuss in Deanery groups how they might like to use these newly-available funds, which resulted in the drawing up of Agenda for many Deanery Conferences. Finally, there was a period of hustings for those members seeking election to some of the Provincial bodies.

Deanery ConferencesThere were two Conferences held in 2016. At the earlier meeting in June elections were held to many of the Diocesan bodies. In addition, a very informative talk was given by Mrs Julie Davies, Diocesan Lay Training Officer, about how the work of the St Padarn Institute is being rolled out in the Diocese. Members requested that Deanery Conferences be held more frequently than just once a year, and so an additional Conference was organised for October. It had a single-agenda item, namely to respond to the question from the Diocesan Standing Committee: ‘What are the main challenges facing the next Bishop of Llandaff?’ Group discussions produced a variety of responses, which were summarised and submitted to the Standing Committee to assist in the preparation of a Diocesan Profile and Person Specification for the next Bishop of Llandaff.

Events CommitteeEvents committee members 2016-2017 are: Jo Blackwell, Gaynor Coles, Philippa Coulson, Mari Dixon, Sue Evans, Linda Jenkins, Ruth Jones, Keith Jones, Anne Komor, Margaret Miller, Angela Roberts, Ann Turner, Tom Turner. We have worked very hard to put on a variety of events over the past twelve months; We started off with a themed night in May where those who wanted to dressed in 50’s fashion. We ate food typical of a street party of the time served on fine china and bunting adorned the hall. The night was enhanced by the sound of the Big Band who kept us entertained with songs of the era and we were treated to some wonderful dancing and singing.A summer picnic was arranged for a Sunday afternoon in June where we had hoped to make good use of the wonderful rectory garden. However due to typical Welsh summer weather (rain!) we decided to hold the event in the church hall. This proved to be a big success; after eating a great selection of food, some played games at the back of the hall whilst others enjoyed an impromptu sing-a-long. Many thanks to our resident pianist Jo Blackwell and Revd Jayne and Chris Judd who led the singing.October saw two events being held; Harvest Supper and Autumn Fayre. The Harvest Supper at the beginning of the month was well attended and included parishioners from the Tabernacle. A lovely meal of filled jacket potatoes followed by apple pie and custard was served. The Autumn Fayre was held at the end of the month, earlier in the season than previous years; Proceeds from the fayre exceeded £800 and benefiting charities were Parkinson’s / Huntington’s / Ty Hafan / Gazza Dental / Sandville Self Help Centre. The Christian Aid Big Breakfast was a huge success in February; approximately 100 breakfasts were cooked by Mel and Allen. Waitressing skills of the team were put to the test and feedback received was excellent. Shrove Tuesday was celebrated at Nolton Hall this year; thanks to John Dixon for arranging fun and games at the start of the evening. Each table had a quiz sheet to do whilst enjoying their pancakes. If you would like to join the team for 2017-2018 please let me know or speak with Fr Mike.Gaynor Coles

Description of the ParishThe Parish is part of the Town of Bridgend, together with its adjoining areas of Wildmill, Litchard, the Village of Coity and Brackla. It is part of the Deanery of Bridgend, which is within the Diocese of Llandaff and the Province of the Church in Wales. The Parish is a Registered Charity - 1135927Dedication of ChurchesThe Parish Church is dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin and is situated in the Village of Coity. The daughter Church is also dedicated to St. Mary and is situated very close to the Town Centre in the area of the Town known as Nolton. The third Church, also dedicated to St. Mary, is situated within the Archdeacon John Lewis Church In Wales Voluntary Aided Primary School, on the Brackla Estate.

ObjectivesThe Church in Wales is a Province within the Anglican Communion and as such has the task of advancing the Christian Religion, through worldwide Mission. The Parochial Church Council is required to ensure that the life and work of the churches within their Parish is fulfilled both locally and further afield. The PCC is not a body corporate. Its composition, procedures and powers are set out and regulated by the Constitution of the Church in Wales. This is amended from time to time to keep pace with changing times. It is set up under Section 3(1) of the Welsh Churches Acts of 1914. Elections to serve on the Parochial Church Council take place at the Annual Vestry Meeting. The Representative Body of the Church in Wales holds lands and property, which includes the churches of Coity and Nolton, their contents and churchyards. It also acts on behalf of the Province for paying stipends to full time clergy. The PCC is responsible for promoting the mission of the Church, the parochial budget, all expenditure, the care and maintenance of church fabric and churchyards and also for acting on any matter referred to in the Constitution. The Council is the normal channel of communication between parishioners and the Bishop of the Diocese. With regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit and the advancement of religion, we try to enable people in our communities to live out their faith as part of our parish through: worship and prayer; learning about the Gospel, and developing their knowledge, faith and trust in Jesus; providing pastoral care for the people of the parish; and engaging in missionary and outreach work. To facilitate this work we consider it vital that we maintain the fabric of our three churches and two church halls.

Organisation of Parochial Church CouncilThe Parochial Church Council is at present organised into sub committees, which carry out the duties and business assigned to it by the parent body. All the deliberations and recommendations of the Sub Committees are brought back to the PCC for ratification and/or authorisation. Membership of the sub committees is decided at the first full meeting of the PCC after the Annual Vestry Meeting, each year. The PCC met as a full body on nine occasions during 2016.

The Mission Sub CommitteeThe Committee was formed at the first full PCC meeting following the 2015 AVM, and considered how to take forward the Growing Healthy Churches initiative.

The Communications Sub CommitteeThis Committee picked up on the work of the equivalent Committee that had ceased to function a couple of years ago. Its principal focus is the setting up of a parish Facebook page, work which is ongoing.

Finance Sub CommitteeThe Committee prepares budgets for the forthcoming year and keeps a watching brief on all income and expenditure throughout the year. It also prepares budgetary advice on specific items referred to it by the PCC. The Parish Treasurer presents a written financial report to the PCC at each meeting.

Fabric Sub Committee The Committee normally meets prior to each PCC meeting. Its business, like all sub committees, is minuted and presented for approval by the parent body. It is authorised to spend up to £1000 on urgent items, without further approval by the PCC. The Committee has a pro-active concern for the fabric of the churches, churchyards, church halls, boundary walls and houses of the assistant clergy. It also considers in detail and prepares budgets for items referred to it by the PCC. Under the guidance of its chairman it also ensures a prompt response to all recommendations resulting from Quinquennial Inspections.

Electoral RollThe Electoral Roll has been reviewed for 2017. The current number on roll is 189.
