THE DISCIPLINE AND FRUITS OF WAITING

As this Parish Magazine goes to print, the period of waiting has come to an end. At last, after nearly six months, our church has been re-wired, re-plastered, re-painted and re-decorated; and we will be able to gather once again for worship in St Stephen’s as from 29th November. This will be a day of great joy for us all. Since my arrival on the island last July, I have seen the way in which so many of you at St Stephen’s have worked to ensure the continuity of our parish life during these six months. Our worship services and other activities have carried on without interruption; and our Churchwardens have invested much time and energy monitoring the renovation of the church building. Thanks to their vigilance and efforts, this has been accomplished according to specifications and on schedule. I am so grateful to you all. Funnily enough, as we come to the end of this period of waiting, we find that we have embarked upon another! The season of Advent is a season of waiting. We prepare to celebrate the coming of God to the world as a baby in a manger; and we remind ourselves that we await His return and the full inauguration of His kingdom. Waiting is an art that our modern age has forgotten. To look forward to something in patience requires discipline; but waiting also produces growth, maturity and wisdom. This Advent, as we wait to celebrate God’s coming to us at Christmas, may He use this time to produce much fruit: not only in our hearts, but in our commu-nity as we reach out to others.

Churchwardens’ Report

By the time you read this we will be back in our newly refurbished Church Building and you will have noticed a big difference. All the electrical wiring, sockets and lights have been replaced and now comply with the very latest electrical specification. For the first time we have fire alarms in the choir loft, vestry, and sacristy also emergency lighting at all access points and various places around the church as required by the fire department. Everywhere has now been decorated and where needed the plasterwork has been replaced (which was quite a lot). Some things which may not be so obvious are for instance the floor in the Lady Chapel. No - it is not a new floor! We have just had the parquet tiles sanded down and sealed. Also the wooden parquet in front of the nave. We now have a new red carpet in the sanctuary. Hopefully we have brought warmth to the choir who for the past two years have not had any heating in the choir loft but now have their own independent under pew radiator system. You may have noticed the new oak pelmet above the high altar but what you cannot see is the pulley mechanism that will now allow anyone to pull up the purple curtain for the Lent period. This will save climbing ladders at the beginning and end of Lent and make things much safer. The cement filled edge to the chancel steps has been removed and replaced with matching Portland stone. For those who do not venture into the Sacristy we now have a dropped ceiling installed which will save on our heating costs. A new sink (without a crack in it!) and hot water available for the first time in 150 years plus a new electric oil filled wall mounted heater. The Vestry has been completely refurbished and we now have a toilet suitable for disa-bled access and a new kitchenette with all sinks having hot water on tap. We would like to say thanks to all who have worked so hard to complete the project on time. Stuart Pierce of CCD without whose help guidance and management of the project none of this would have been possible. We are so lucky to have someone with the passion and expertise of buildings of this age to advise and guide us. Vince Smith and Stuart Tucker of Guernsey Electric who planned and oversaw the electrical replacement also John and Ryan for their attention to detail in carrying out the work. Simon Watson of Watsons & Sons for all aspects of the building work and all his and the many subcontractors workers who worked hard to keep the job on time and on budget. Granite Le Pelley for repairs to the Chancel steps Here we must make mention of George who turned his hand to many things and did all the carpentry work with such care and precision.

Priaulx West Ltd. for the plumbing work. DWA for supplying and fitting the Sanctuary Carpet Robin of Allwood Floors for the Lady Chapel and front of the nave parquet floor treat-ment. Not forgetting all from our congregation who have helped to get everything ready for our return. There is nothing in the church that has not been cleaned, polished, painted or repaired! – quite remarkable! It has been a rewarding experience in this day and age to work with these tradesmen who have a pride and passion in their work and we have been fortunate to have these people on our project. Thank you from us all. Tony and David

CHRISTMAS

Christmas offers wide opportunities to engage with the local community through concerts and carol services for schools and local organisations.

It is the season of invitation – a person to person approach.

A chance to invite someone you know to something at somewhere you love -

ST STEPHEN’S CHURCH

THE INVITATION

“O Come All Ye Faithful”

This carol is an invitation to step into the nativity story to make your own journey of imagination to be there in the Bethlehem stable, and to join our worship with that of others who have already travelled to this place. God has travelled too, according to verse 2, from heaven to the hay. Jesus is God, arrived on earth as a child – perfect God and perfect human. The angels sing to God in the highest. All the angels of heaven are involved in the celebration and we are invited to join them. The special Christmas Day verse completes our journey when we stand by the crib where everyone has arrived, including baby Jesus with his proud parents Mary and Joseph. The carol encourages everyone to celebrate the miracle of the incarnation. The Christian truth and wonder of Christmas is something worth shouting about above the counterblast of High Street tills, the revelry of office parties and clubs and the blare of television schedules, which seem to have taken over Christmas in our material commercialised day and age.

RICHES AND POVERTY

“Once in Royal David’s City”

Traditionally opening the Christmas Carol Service at King’s College, Cambridge each year, this carol brings many a tear to many an eye. The nativity scene is one of poverty, exclusion, discomfort and danger. The word ‘lowly’ is used no less than four times, In a world where the majority of the population still live well below the poverty line, this scene is one of God identifying himself with humanity at its most deprived and vulnerable. It is also a picture of God trusting human beings with a crucial job. God gives the most important job in history to a teenage girl who had the faith and trust to say “Yes” to him.

BOXING DAY

THE FEAST OF ST STEPHEN

THE GIFT OF KINDNESS

“Good King Wenceslas”

Not a carol but words based on a legend from the Czech Republic of a man who, on the Feast of Stephen, was moved by what he saw and he helped the poor. He became a martyr to the Christian faith. On Boxing Day, during our Patronal Festival, we remember and give thanks for St Stephen who became the first Christian martyr. He was stoned to death outside Jerusalem for proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord.

“CHRISTMAS QUIPS”

Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil – it has no point Because of God’s grace, failure is never final.

Don’t give up on yourself. Even Moses was a basket case.

We play the game; God keeps the score. Erwin W Lutzer

Barbara

After church one morning a mother commented,”the choir was awful this

morning and organist far too slow”. The father commented, “the sermon was too long again and so dull”. Their nine year old daughter added, “but you have to admit that it was not bad for 50p”.

While watching a vicar baptising a baby, a little girl was heard to say, “Daddy, why is the vicar brainwashing that baby?”.

People are strange. They always want the front seat of the coach,

the middle lane of the motorway and the back of the church.

The world’s greatest danger point is the tip of the tongue.

HYMN 365

A minister was completing a temperance sermon. With great emphasis he said, “If I had all the beer in the world, I’d take it and pour it into the river”. With even greater emphasis he said, “And if I had all the wine in the world, I’d take it and pour it into the river”. And then finally, shaking his fist in the air, he said, “And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I’d take it and pour it into the river”. Sermon completed, he sat down . . . . . . The song leader stood very cautiously and announced, with a smile, nearly laughing, “For our closing hymn, let us sing Hymn 365, “Shall we gather at the River.” See you at the river but bring your own glass! If you want a thing well done, give it to a busy man - preferably one who has a good secretary!

The Train of Life At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believe they will always travel on our side. However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone. As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will be significant i.e. our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of your life. Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we don't realize they vacated their seats. This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells. Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers requiring that we give the best of ourselves. The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way, love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life. I wish you a joyful journey on the train of life. Reap success and give lots of love. More importantly, thank God for the journey. Lastly, I thank you for being one of the passengers on my train. A visitor to St Stephen’s and his house group pondered the following from Fr. John’s

MOTHERS’ UNION

“A BLAST FROM THE PAST”

Sorting through the Mothers’ Union memorabilia following the recent closure of our Branch, I came across this piece, written by the late Vera Cochrane, and read by her and Heather le Gallez at a centenary supper in 1987. Many names mentioned will be recalled with affection, and events will remind us that little changes over the years, and some facts will cause a smile. “So, we’re a hundred years old today! I wonder if those other M.U.M.s who started our branch are looking down on us today and eagerly watching our progress? Unfortunately our records of the early days are non-existent – so we have to start our chronicle with the A.G.M. in October 1932. This was very well attended with 52 sitting down for tea plus 4 new members. Sewing meetings were arranged to be held fortnightly at a Mrs Iles’ house for ‘Waifs & Strays’! The punctuation gives no clue as to whether the sewing is for waifs and strays or whether Mrs Iles’ home is the habitat for the needy souls ……. The membership at this time stands at 65. In January 1933 there was a Christmas party – the sad comment was that it was a very wet night and only 40 attended. 60 were expected! Around this time one name occurs frequently re catering arrangements, it was PLEACE (please?) – does anyone remember it? In July 1934 Mrs Pinney was made a member – I know a lot of us will remember her with affection. At least the Christmas party in 1935 was very successful but - and I quote – ‘a bit marred by Fr Jackson’s absence’, and at the party in January 1936 Fr Gerhold showed a film – there were 3 tables of whist – Mrs Rose played the piano …….and Mrs Mauger resigned! In 1938 Fr Gerhold produced a comic pantomime, presumably the cast were M.U. members, and the summer outing which was usually held at Pleimont was cancelled owing to lack of support. The Christmas party was still held in January 1940, but only 37 were present. No further minutes were found until 1949. Now subs were raised from 1/6 to 2/6 including journals. However members were becoming quite adventurous and started playing badminton under coach Elaine Ralls; later Miss Phillips helped out. Two Old Tyme dances were held to raise money for the racquets!

Page 17: The Parish Magazine of St Stephen’s Churchst-stephens-guernsey.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/December-2015-January...Now available at Post offices The St Stephen’s Christmas

In April of that year Fr and Mrs Moore arrived to find our membership quite low, but by 1950 it had risen to 35 and the minutes record praises for Mrs Moore for her untiring work - and Mrs Gargan for doing the canteen work! In ’51 things were really beginning to hum ….. badminton in the Vicarage garden, several speakers, a summer outing, and the M.U. stall at the church garden fete raised the princely sum of £10. 10. 101/2! 1952 records that children under school age should be allowed to attend meetings and successful monthly dances were held. In ’53 members blacked up for a minstrel group to entertain at the Parish Tea. Membership was up to 51 in 1954 and Corporate Communion of the M.U. was held on the 3rd Sunday in the month at 8 a.m. Excitement as talk starts regarding the purchase of a M.U. banner, although there was not enough money in the kitty at the time, and New Years Eve dances were held in the Hall. Around 1955 the membership stood at 54 plus 4 associate members and approximately 40 attended each meeting, which is pretty good. M.U.M.s blossomed into actresses as they performed a sketch for the Parish Tea. Several members joined the band of helpers to scrub and polish the church after the decorators had finished. Later the M.U. stall at the garden fete raised over £44. Regretfully the old tyme dances ceased but whist drives were to be held to raise money for the banner. In 1956 we found the first reference to Fr Millard (hooray!). The banner had been ordered – hopefully for the Guilds Festival - and veils were purchased. However it was Midnight Mass before we could proudly display the St Stephen’s M.U. banner. We had a record high of 63 members in 1957 and in that year there was major fund-raising to reduce the debt on the schoolroom. Years later nothing has really changed has it? We started to get a little slack in ’58 when attendance at the Corporate Communion began to fall off. In ’59 Fr Millard spoke of his work with teenagers in the parish culminating in the formation of the Company of Christ the Conqueror. Our M.U. tablecloth was made by Gladys Martel and the M.U. badge was embroidered by Miss Trasler. In 1960 banners were carried for the first time at the M.U. Festival, and Overseas Fund boxes started. We lost Daphne to Jersey , but our stall at the summer fete raised £72! And believe it or not, the Mothers’ Union Festival was held at St George’s Hall!! Two plays were presented for the Parish Tea as entertainment and were produced by Elaine Ralls. Marge Croucher and Evelyne le Moigne were amongst the regular thespians in those days. The Christmas party, still going strong, and now incorporating the C.E.M.S. was M.C’d by John Stephenson

Page 18: The Parish Magazine of St Stephen’s Churchst-stephens-guernsey.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/December-2015-January...Now available at Post offices The St Stephen’s Christmas

A float was entered in the Battle of Flowers – it was a replica of St Saviour’s Church – to mark Christian Family Year. Finally in 1962 we said good-bye to Fr & Mrs Moore and gave her a farewell gift of a manicure set & cheque. Jill Stephenson was admitted as a member, and whilst this isn’t world shattering news, she was the last to be admitted by Fr Moore. Successful whist drives continued to be run by Lil Kaines and Miss Phillips. In ’63 we said hello to Mary Kemp, our new enrolling member, bringing with her news that Mary Sumner House suggest a more progressive M.U. So an evening meeting for younger working members was started with Ruth Martel as Leader. Mary’s idea for Thanksgiving for Marriage to be held in January was well received and continues to flourish. On now to 1956 with a membership of 59 but the minutes tell of poor attendances at meetings, the Corporate Communion and the Prayer Group. We were still having a riotous Christmas party in January, and the menu had progressed from sandwiches and cakes to a sit-down knife and fork plus a glass of wine! Lil Kaines starts up a Young Wives Group, with weekly meetings playing badminton. She started with 4 but soon progressed to 15 members. She is quoted as saying that it had been hard to get them talking, now the difficulty seems to be getting them to stop! That year we celebrated the Church’s centenary and started the cradle roll party in June. St Stephen’s was the venue for the Deanery Festival in 1966 and “ the church was filled to overflowing & supported almost to a man by the Island clergy”. We were complimented on the smooth-running organisation of the afternoons events and then spoilt it all by having a black-out during the tea because we had-n’t put enough shillings in the electric meter! Sadly, after 20 years the afternoon badminton was to give up – only 4 people now took part. The racquets were sold for 7/6 each! So the years went by and once again in 1969 we hosted the Deanery Festival when 200 M.U.M.s came from Jersey and lunch was served in the Badminton Hall in the Rohais. Looking back to 10-12 years ago the average at M.U. meetings had been around 40 – in ’69 it is only 12, although it numbers 40 when the evening & afternoon young wives join forces for an outing. At this time, the then Secretary, Heather le Gallez, records “I would like to ask you not to segregate members into evening and afternoon groups, but to remember that we are a branch of the Mothers’ Union who are lucky enough to have 2 meetings a month. Words of wisdom indeed. Running quickly through the following years we find that in ’73 the committee were getting slack – no minutes were signed! In ’74 Lil & Henry’s Ruby Wedding was a highlight. In ’82 our M.U. starts to gain momentum again, and in ’84 we took part in a concert to celebrate the visit of the Central President, Hazel Treadgold

Page 19: The Parish Magazine of St Stephen’s Churchst-stephens-guernsey.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/December-2015-January...Now available at Post offices The St Stephen’s Christmas

By ’87 the minutes of the evening group fizzle out! In conclusion, and as current Branch Secretary, may I say that whatever the ups and downs of the past 100 years, the nucleus of our M.U. is rock steady. We still have those who have been members for 40, 50 years & more. Our commitment to the ideals of marriage is proof in the fact that we are continually celebrating Silver, Ruby, Gold and even Diamond weddings”. Jill Stephenson

APCC Summary of the meeting held on 21 October 2015

Fr John opened the meeting with prayers.

Safeguarding The Churchwardens, Father John and Steph Dragun attended a course organised by the Bishop of Dover and have all had enhanced checks. Bishop Trevor feels that safeguarding is very important. The course stressed that vulnerable adults are those who are unable to protect themselves against harm or exploitation. People may be vulnerable at a certain time rather than constantly so everyone has to be on their guard and aware of the circumstances. It was felt that it would be a good idea for a policy statement to be in the magazine so members of the congregation understand what is entailed and who to contact if they have any concerns. Youth and children’s ministry It is vital we reach out to the youth and children and that they have access to the Church. Over 70 are involved in the youth groups that meet with the various groups in the Community Centre. A possible way of involving them more would be for there to be paraded activities at certain times of the year. Website The new website has been set up and Claudia Moore will keep it up to date. It will be launched after the induction. It will show our windows. People will be able to donate funds online for our fund raising projects. When people look at the website of “a church near you” a link will take them to our new website. There will also be links from Facebook and Twitter Ladies’ College Fr John took his first assembly at the Ladies’ College last week for Harvest and then met with the teachers after assembly. The RE teacher is keen for involvement with the church and courses may run with input from Fr John. It has been agreed with the French teachers that he will assist in tutoring French conversation. He will be involved with the Leavers Service and an assembly for Remembrance. There is a possibility of an after-school cookery project in the Community Centre.

Graduals The Propers that are sung at the 11.00am Mass are linked to the Book of Common Prayer. Fr John feels it would be more appropriate to look at ones linked to the current readings With this in mind he has ordered three versions and will pass these on to Fliss for her consideration and input. Social Events Committee Wednesday 13 January Social events Committee Meeting at 7.30pm in vestry. Saturday 11 June Summer Fete. The date for the Summer Fete has been provisionally set. The Committee would welcome ideas of how to raise more easily £1,000. As there is a tremendous amount of work preparing and dismantling the stalls etc. It was mentioned that the Vale Church no longer has a Fete and have tried very successfully an Italian evening. AOB Marg and Tony Kaines were thanked for the terrific amount of work they had done regarding the renovation work. There was a constant problem of dog mess in the Church grounds. Some people seem to think it is public land. The Churchwardens are considering erecting a sign stating that it is private land but that people are welcome to enter provided that they respect this and do not leave litter. It would not be practical to lock the gates. There has been some misunderstanding about flower arrangements – particularly over Christmas. The Trustees want the church to be decorated but are anxious that all flower arrangers – whether they are members of the congregation or members of PTA’s for school carol services – think about watering the flowers and don’t mess up the window sills. The carpet in the sanctuary was saturated for two main causes, Dampness coming up through the stonework together with the of over watering of flower arrangements the carpet could not be salvaged. The meeting ended with prayers and The Grace at 8.35pm.

Alongside us these last months during the restoration of St Stephen’s has been the San Damiano Crucifix which you see at the head of Fr John’s letters to us. It symbolises the commitment to renew and rebuild the church through the power of Christ. After hours of hard work by many, St Stephen’s is now looking stunningly beautiful for Fr John’s Induction as our vicar. Now we have a restored building and a new vicar to lead us during his ministry. But we are the church and we must be ready to support him by reaching out to the local community and beyond, to encourage, invite and care. God’s blessings to you all for a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year. Val and Graham Moullin
