++++++++++++++++ A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Most Holy Name Catholic Church, Garfield, NJ Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 10, 2021 “As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him and asked, ‘Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’... ‘You know the commandments’... He replied, ‘Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth.’ Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have rich treasure in heaven, then come, and follow me.’” The scene is easy to visualize, the conversation clear and simple, but the challenge is awesome. Am I willing to take the place of the man, approaching Jesus and asking the same question? Like Him I can probably respond that I too try to observe the ten commandments or the two great commandments of love of God and neighbor. Perhaps Jesus is indicating that I too am lacking one thing. What is it? The man was asked to forfeit his riches and treasures. What is my one thing, what is my treasure which can be the barrier to eternal life? Jesus looks at me today and He loves me too.

St. Clare of Assisi does have a handicap lift accessible from Mill Street with an attendant for ALL weekend Masses. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Trying to live a true Catholic Christian life is difficult. Catholicism and living the Gospel as Jesus prescribes is a daunting task. That is why some choose to be a ‘cafeteria Catholic’ picking & choosing what they want to believe and follow, others find being Catholic is too much work and requires too much effort. Others forget that while the Church is divinely-inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit, it can be contorted whims of Original Sin and one’s Free Will – the Faith is Pure, the Savior is Real but sinful humanity distorts the Truth. Jesus always begs us do not be like the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and the Scribes. Being Catholic takes an act of the Will and often we fall into emotions of laziness, anger, and pride (I do not need God!). It is easy to criticize and easy to judge, we need to not be afraid to surrender our entire being to God. Requiescat in Pace May the soul of Helen Shamus dwell in the Heavenly Mansions of God’s Eternal Love. Eucharistic Ministers are reminded to wear masks for the distribution of Holy Communion at Weekend Masses. Second Collection This week’s will be for the Building Fund. Next week’s second collection will be for Heat & Energy. N.B. Since Schuylkill County is in the ‘HIGH RISK’ category for COVID, the Cemetery Mass will continue till the end of November.
