THE BIG 3Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time

visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to

be involved in 3 ways:

WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDSGather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up

the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infant-5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the

opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

CONNECT IN COMMUNITY

Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a

better way- Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This

may be through a Mini-Church, Bible study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

SERVE OTHERSJoin a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover

the joy of serving.

When you live in the Midwest, summer becomes like a three-month vacation for your senses. The smell of grilled barbeque ribs hovering in the air while you cut your lawn. The sound of motorcycles ripping down the street. The feel of Deep Woods Off bug spray coating your skin. A swig of fresh, homemade lem-onade running down your pipes. But then one day, you walk into Target to buy some soothing Aloe Vera Gel and—BOOM! Suddenly all the signs point to the back-to-school section for a mega sale on #2 pencils.

This is when you remember something you heard at church last Sunday. Something about Faith Church launching an international campus in that warm, sunny country…where was that again? Oh, right! The Dominican Republic. And you wish you would’ve paid closer attention to exactly when this new campus was going to open, and who you need to call in order to offer your help this coming winter.

Well, here’s your chance to read all about the upcom-ing launch of Faith Church Santo Domingo and the pastor who will be leading it…Pastor David Mojica. (Mo-he-kah)

I had the privilege of interviewing Pastor David Mo-jica and his wife, Ylva, to find out more about them and this exciting new adventure ahead. Pastor Dave Weemhoff was also present for the interview, so I thought maybe he wanted to get some pointers on how to start a Faith Church multi-site in the Caribbe-an somewhere. But he said no, he had no such plans.

So grab a cup of coffee, and get ready to find out all about The Mojicas and the new Faith Church Santo

FAITH CHURCHSANTO DOMINGO

AN INTERVIEW WITH DAVID & YLVA MOJICA

Page 5: The Paper August, Issue 7 Vol. 2

Q. Tell us a little about yourself, family, background…and why are you planting a church in the Dominican Republic?

David: My name is David Mojica. I am the second youngest of ten kids in my family. My father was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. He moved to New York City in 1953 at the age of 25 to work in the church, and this is where he met my mother, who em-igrated from Puerto Rico. They were married, and my father was a minister for the next 50 years. My family was always involved in church life. Actually, out of the ten kids in my family, five of us went into ministry work.

Although I studied toward an electrical engineering degree, most of my professional work was in city gov-ernment, and eventually I became the District Manag-er for 140,000 people in the Bronx. I also completed a Master of Arts Degree in Organizational Leadership and earned a Master of Divinity Degree from Prince-ton Theological Seminary. I first worked as a youth pastor and planted a church in the Bronx where I had the awesome experience of shepherding this growing congregation for five years.

Towards the end of my father’s ministry, he encour-aged me to visit the Dominican Republic for a short-term mission trip. Since my father was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, he knew it was a good place for me to go and experience how the peo-ple in the church there are so passionate in spirituality and are also strong prayer warriors.

So in 1997, I visited the Dominican Republic for the first time and happened to meet my bride, Ylva, who worked in the church there. Three months later we were married.

Ylva: I was born and raised in the Dominican Repub-lic. I am the oldest of six children; I have one sister and four brothers. I started attending the Catholic Church at nine years old. Every Tuesday, my aunt gathered the kids from my extended family and held Bible school out of my grandma’s house. I feverishly attended these Bible classes, made a commitment to follow Christ, was baptized at the age of 13, and loved being a part of church. My parents were not regular church attenders and didn’t want to bring me to church every week, but after a while, I convinced my parents that church is where I wanted to be.

When I became an adult, I earned a bachelor’s de-gree in computer science and worked in a computer lab for the government. I also held many positions in the church. I was a deacon and head youth leader for the entire denomination for which I was a part of in the Dominican Republic. While I was working in the church one day...I saw this good-looking man (whom I had never seen before) walk past my office door a few times. I asked my pastor who he was, and he intro-duced me to David. And that is how we met.

David: From 1998 – 2000, I became involved in a church in New Jersey through mentorship and ap-prenticeship. I did missionary work, created small groups and we expanded. Then I received a call from the RCA (Reformed Church of America) to plant a Reformed church in New Jersey aimed toward young adults. I did this for about 15 months but realized it was not going as well as planned. We did not have the help necessary to carry on this new venture. But, my wife and I believe that it shaped us for what God was going to call us to do in the future.

Over time, my wife and I had three daughters. Esther is the oldest; she is now 14 years old. Sarah is 12 and our youngest, Ruth, is 10.

In 2012, my wife and I had an overpowering passion to do missionary work in the Dominican Republic. We felt God calling us to do work there. We prayed intensely and called a lot of people for advice. I knew back in 2001 that I wanted to come back to the Do-minican Republic, and my wife felt the same.

When I spoke to the RCA about this passion of ours to do missionary work in the DR, they said they would help. So in October 2013, my wife and the girls moved to the DR to get settled in and enrolled in school there. We are so thankful to God that we had so much help from family and friends in the DR.

Q. Why are you excited to work with Faith Church? What will the benefit for the kingdom of God look like?

David: Our desire in doing kingdom work is to part-ner with a stateside church that is gospel-driven and mission-minded. We are excited to go on this venture with Faith Church. Our approach has always been not to do it alone, and we yearn to be connected to a stateside church that we feel is our faith family and missionary partner. We knocked on many doors and prayed like mad, and in God’s providence, He con-nected us to Faith Church. We originally connected to Faith Church through the RCA via the Director of Mission Engagement at a church planting conference in Santo Domingo in 2014. I like that Faith Church is both rooted in Reformed theology and evangelical in its mission and practice.

Q. How do you see the Dominican version of Faith Church “reaching the disconnected and growing the connected” in Santo Domingo? (Do you see a need for a Reformed evangelical church in the DR?)

David: The churches in the DR are great in evangel-ical mission but not in social mission. They are not as intentional in this area of ministry. So by us go-ing there, we can reach the people by engaging and growing in faith as an evangelical presence but also to feed the poor and bring restoration to the broken in the power of the Spirit.

Page 6: The Paper August, Issue 7 Vol. 2

Q. How can the people of Faith Church pray for you and support you?

David and Ylva: We seek your prayers so that

• God may show up.

• God’s protection will be on our family.

• God will grant us holy boldness.

• God’s favor will spark a Gospel movement.

• The Lord will guide us as we prepare for a fall campus launch.

• Multitudes will be attracted to and ultimately partner with us in the DR.

• People will connect with this ministry and the launch will take off with great excitement and joy.

We would love for Faith Church to partner with us at least in short-term mission trips. It will be a lot of work, but your prayers, financial, and logistical support will set the way for God to ignite a movement of His Spirit in the DR. We want people to find rest in Christ and to be restored.

**So if you’re looking to escape the winter blues (or any other time of year) and do some good work for the Lord on a short-term missionary trip, keep Faith Church Santo Domingo in mind. More information to follow soon.

Q. Tell us about Santo Domingo and your target area. How are you connecting in the community already?

David: Santo Domingo is a bustling and heavily con-gested metropolis. We are in a small location to start, on the north side of Santo Domingo. Our space is about 200 square feet total. We started through small groups. This avenue helps us reach new people and grow.

Q. What have you accomplished so far?

David: Small groups, worship, connection with a local public school, visiting sick children and minis-tering to their families at a local Children’s Hospital, baptizing new believers, equipping the saints for the work of the ministry, etc.

So far we have about 50-55 people in small groups, with 5 small groups total. There are about 30-35 peo-ple who attend mid-week home group gatherings, and we are seeing new people come to Christ.

Q. What is the five year vision for Faith Church Santo Domingo?

David: Within the next five years, we want to contin-ue growing through the multiplication of small groups. Then we can prepare people to go as Spirit-filled missionaries throughout Greater Santo Domingo and the rest of the Island. We hope to have two anchor churches in Greater Santo Domingo, dozens of small groups, and see the birth of a Gospel movement. Our hope is that God, in His sovereign will, will use us to spark a movement in Santo Domingo and expand out.

With the launching of Faith Santo Domingo, we are in need of a Spanish interpreter for print pieces. If you are fluent in reading and writing

Spanish, please contact Karyn Justice at [email protected]

After 8 years of being the “nomadic tribe” of Faith campuses, Cedar Lake broke ground to build a permanent home!

Faith Cedar Lake has been an active part of the community since it launched at Hanover Central eight years ago. Without owning property of their own, the congregation has been very flexible, having met at 8 different locations including the Hanover gym, auditorium, the CAC, various parks, and most recently at the Cedar Lake Conference Grounds. Campus Pastor Dave Weemhoff is thrilled that his church family will now have consistency and a home of their own.

The groundbreaking took place at the new church site, 6729 West 133rd, on Sunday, June 14. Many of our campus pastors, town officials and congregants were in attendance to express their support and join in the excitement of the project. Pastor Dave shared about the history and future goals of Faith Cedar Lake. Pastor Bob gave a blessing and conveyed the joy that is felt campus-wide. The ceremony also included a time of worship and prayer. Miraculously, the rain held off until the last picture was being taken!

Faith Cedar Lake is excited to have creative spaces for kids and meeting rooms for events. More importantly, “Lakers” are more than ready to plant deep roots in the community that they love and serve.

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think according to the power at work within

us, to Him be GLORY in the church and in Christ Jesus thoughout all generations,

forever and ever. Amen!”

What’s your name? Sam & Sue Zarate

Where are you from? Dyer, Indiana

How did you first get connected to Faith Church? A co-worker invited us in June 2003.

What have you seen God do at Faith Church? Several expansions, multi-sites started & the disconnected being connected with God.

What do you enjoy about the worship service? The praise music and people standing up worshiping God with outstretched arms. We have experienced spiritual growth, which isn’t a destination but rather a journey.

Where do you serve at Faith Church? We both in Frontline, Prayer Team, Faith Church Special Events and any serving opportunity that comes up.

How do you connect with others at your campus? We are mini-church leaders and work with a great community of people on Saturday nights who have servant hearts; God put us all together as one big family.

What have you seen God do in your life? God has blessed us with 38 years of marriage and has given us some of the same spiritual gifts so that we can serve together.

Anything else you want to share? Take the spiritual gifts test online to learn your gifts. If you aren’t involved in some kind of serving area or in a mini-church, you don’t know what you’re missing!

G rowing up, I remember a picture that hung on the wall of my grandma’s kitchen which read “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” I recall thinking—as for Grandma, she

is in the church choir, teaches Sunday School, and we don’t leave the dinner table until she reads the Bible and devotions—so yep, she’s got the house (including our whole family) covered for serving.

I now realize my idea of serving was way off. It’s not about making sure we’re covered. Serving God is not a sacrifice that somebody in the family has to make in order to receive God’s protection.

Then what is the true meaning and importance of serv-ing? Serving is important because it reflects a piece of who God made you to be. Think about this - you come to worship and God gives you this beautifully wrapped gift. Wouldn’t you want to open it?! Inside that mysterious wrapped package is your spiritual gift, which you may not have discovered about yourself yet! By opening it, you learn more about yourself and who God made you to be. Worshiping and serving put together produces the greatest impact. But sometimes I think we walk around with our gifts all wrapped up, like we’re afraid to open them. Here are some answers to questions we may have about spiritual gifts:

What exactly is a spiritual gift? Spiritual gifts are freely given, supernatural abilities received from God, secured by Jesus and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Every believer has at least one spiritual gift. The gift is meant for you to benefit others, to build up other believers and serve one another better. Your gift can empower believers to expand the kingdom of God.

Why is it important to know my spiritual gift when serving? Knowing your spiritual gift will assist you in finding God’s will for your life, help you overcome feel-ings of inadequacy and inferiority, help you find your place in the body of Christ and help you gain a sense of freedom in areas where you aren’t gifted.

How can I develop my gift? Spiritual gifts are ac-tivated through service, energized by the Spirit and motivated by love. Some ways these gifts can be developed inclu: studying scripture, reading books on spiritual gifts, talking to other Christians who have sim-ilar gifts, and of course…begin to use your gift in ministry.

What are spiritual gifts not? They are not merit badges, rewards or signs of an individual’s spirituality. They are not natural talents.

How do I discover my spiritual gift? First, accept the fact that you ARE gifted because each person is given something to do that shows who God is. Then choose

to discover and operate in your spiritual gift(s). Here are some action steps you can take to discover your spiritual gifts:

• Take an assesment to understand what your spiritual gift(s) are and explore the descriptions, traits and cau-tions about each one.

• Pray for guidance and ask God to reveal your gift(s) to you and how He wants you to serve.

• Analyze yourself - your life story, passions and interests.

• Seek confirmation from other Christians.

• Ask 3 other people you trust to tell you what they think you do best and how you relate to others.

• Get involved in ministry - try a few and see what “fits” and then evaluate those results.

Consider your season of life. It may not match up with gifts and availability to serve. There may be “hang time” in this season. Though you can’t activate your gifts or do service, ask God to prepare you and seek to grow in your relationship with Him.

Where can I take this test and get started?

1. Go to faithchurchonline.org and click on the “Connect” tab.

2. On the next screen, look to the sidebar on the left, and click on the “Serve @Faith tab.

3. On this “Where Do I Fit?” page, scroll down the screen to see the “Steps.”

4. With Step 1, choose either Youth or Adult (the correct option for you) for the online assessment. The online assessment takes about 15-20 minutes to complete and will immediately show you the results.

5. Continue on with steps 2 through 4. When you connect at the best possible place to match your giftedness, you will receive the greatest blessing from serving! If you have any questions about serving at Faith, please contact Bonnie Peterson by email [email protected], or call 219.864.0300 ext 109.
