A WARM WELCOME TO THE OxFORDSHIRE RESTAURANT AWARDS
“It gives me great pleasure to
welcome you to the 2nd annual
Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards.
I have been amazed at the positive
energy the Awards has generated
since last year’s inaugural
ceremony. The significance of
winning an Award last year was
clear to all those who were
successful, and this can only be
built upon this year and Beyond.
I have a fantastic committee who
have continued their good work
from last year and a wonderful
team of reviewers who have
supported the committee.
Please support every winner
tonight but, more importantly,
continue to support Oxfordshire
restaurants. Together we can
continue to raise the profile of
Oxfordshire restaurants and
ensure we maintain the excellent
variety and high standards
throughout the county.
Tomorrow we will start to work
towards the 2013 event and look
forward to receiving your support
once again as the Awards continue
to grow.
Good luck to everyone tonight and
thank you for coming.”

Every restaurant, pub, café and fast food outlet in Oxfordshire was invited to enter the Awards back in January.
Each establishment that entered was visited by an independent reviewer who did not reveal their identity
until asking for the bill.
Each reviewer submitted their review to the committee who then decided on the five nominated restaurants in
each category and, shortly after, their winner.
The Public Vote Award has been, as the name implies, open to the general public, not restricted to Oxfordshire.
Promoted via www.inoxford.com, which welcomes over 1,000 unique visitors A DAY, and our new dedicated
Awards website, www.oxfordshirerestaurantawards.com, votes have been coming from all over the UK and
beyond. In total, at the time of going to print, we have received over 17,000 votes. The winner is simply the
establishment with the most votes, being careful to eliminate duplicates and the odd restaurant owner who has
voted – you know who you are, Gavin!
The winner of The Oxfordshire Restaurant of the Year has been decided on by the committee taking into account
a number of key factors and will not necessarily be a category winner. It could be a restaurant which has
performed well in the review and secured a healthy number of public votes.

When we were approached by
The In Oxford Group to sponsor
the Awards, we felt this gave us
the perfect opportunity to profile
Miele alongside Oxfordshire’s
excellent restaurants.
We also felt it would enable us to
reinforce that, whilst we are an
international company, our local
community is vital to us, and the
Awards would provide us with the
ideal platform to cement our bond
with Oxfordshire.
Miele was founded in 1899 by Carl
Miele and Reinhard Zinkann and
has always been a family-owned,
family-run company, now in its
fourth generation. Since the
beginning, the Miele motto has
been ‘Immer Besser’ or ‘Forever
Better’ and this philosophy is still
reflected in the legendary quality,
longevity and perfect results
achieved when using our products.
With this philosophy in mind, the
Restaurant Awards provide an
excellent fit for us as we are
equally passionate about best-in-
class food experiences. Miele’s
cooking appliances make it easier
to create the finest foods from the
best ingredients, and provide the
ultimate cooking experience in
your kitchen at home. We
encourage people to come and
learn more about Miele and test all
of our products before they make
a purchase, and in the UK our
purpose built Experience Centre is
located here in Oxfordshire, in
Abingdon.
We look forward to seeing these
Awards grow and hopefully
stimulate healthy competition
between Oxfordshire’s great
restaurants and that is why we
have made a commitment to
support the Awards for two years.
We wish all those who have
entered the very best of luck this
year, next year and in the future for
what we know will become a
regular fixture in Oxfordshire’s
social calendar.
Please continue to support
the Awards and Oxfordshire’s
restaurants.
With the very best to all
nominated restaurants.
DOMINIC WORSLEYMARKETING DIRECTOR, MIELE
Studio 8 visited the majority of our nominees and restaurants who entered the Awards to capture a moment
which reflected the establishment. Selected pictures are available to purchase at www.studio-8.com, but if you

Visit Oxfordshire is pleased to be
working in association with In
Oxford Magazine for the 2012
Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards,
which give profile to the range and
quality of restaurants across the
county.
As a visitor, one of the abiding
souvenirs of a break away is often
the memory of a fantastic meal in a
great location, whether that’s a
quick lunch, a meal in a pub with
friends and family or a romantic
dinner in a candlelit restaurant, all
of which can be found in
Oxfordshire.
At Visit Oxfordshire we look
forward to many more years of the
Restaurant Awards raising
awareness of the great restaurants
we have in Oxfordshire. SUSI GOLDINGDIRECTOR, VISIT OXFORDSHIRE
We are honoured and excited
that Oxford Castle Quarter will
play host to the 2012 Oxfordshire
Restaurant Awards once again.
Now in our sixth year we can see
Oxford Castle Quarter
establishing itself as an
increasingly popular destination to
host events, establishing itself as
a maturing and multi-faceted
venue for all in its own right as the
various businesses across the
quarter develop brand loyalty with
their clientele.
Whether visiting for an intimate
evening for two, getting behind the
scenes with Oxford Open Doors,
or taking an After Dark Tour
around Oxford Castle – Unlocked,
Oxford Castle Quarter is rapidly
earning itself a reputation for
quality service, entertainment,
interest and education.
We hope you enjoy this evening,
and look forward to welcoming
you back to Oxford Castle
Quarter! Now all that’s left to do is
Eat – Drink – Enjoy, as we like to
say here in Oxford Castle Quarter!

It is fantastic and an honour to be
hosting the Restaurant Awards
for the 2nd year in a row
Head Chef Dan Bell and his team
are very much up for the challenge
tonight.
We’ve planned for every aspect of
the evening and are looking
forward to a night to remember. A
special thanks to the team behind
the event, as without them this
would not have been possible,
John Ryan, Tanner Effinger and of
course Chef Dan.
Finally, I wish you all a memorable
Restaurant Awards and if you need
anything, please just ask!
MARK MCSORLEYGENERAL MANAGER, MALMAISON
When so much hard work has
gone into a night like tonight, it’s
hard to single out individuals for
special praise. We have tried to
cover everyone on page 3 -
sincere apologies for any
oversights.
Since last year’s Awards we have
had plenty of positive feedback
and a fair share of ‘constructive’
comments. The difficulty with the
Awards is that, as they are taken
seriously, disappointment goes
hand in hand with a competitive
spirit. It’s important for everyone
to maintain their hunger and
desire to win yet keep focused on
the fact that, between us, we are
trying to raise the profile of
Oxfordshire restaurants to
encourage more residents to eat
out and attract visitors from
outside of the county.
A big ‘thank you’ to Tina of TERA
who’s hard work, commitment and
attention to detail has enabled us
to build on the success of last
year’s Awards.
Have an enjoyable evening.

We packed 270 guests into a huge
marquee at Oxford Castle, in the
Exercise Yard behind Malmaison,
and the end product was a
stunning sea of red and black
tables, which was just incredible.
Special mention to Zoe Naylor of
Miele, Jean-Pierre Morilleau of
Oxford Castle and the Malmaison
A Team of Mark McSorley, John
Ryan (who was co-ordinating the
military operation of food leaving
the kitchen) and Suzy Bramfitt
(who held it together front of
house). Chef Russell Heeley did an
unbelievable job making sure we
could enjoy a terrific meal and
Suzanne Port was also an immense
help with the preparations.
Guests enjoyed a champagne
reception in the A Wing of the
former prison, and they were
joined by actors from The Oxford
Actors Network playing the part of
prisoners, together with their
very own Prison Warden, Mr
Mackay! The Orchestra of St
John’s also played at the reception.
The Awards were hosted by Reya
El-Salahi, a BBC radio and
television broadcaster, writer and
journalist, originally from Oxford,
and Donald Sloan, Head of the
Oxford School of Hospitality
Management at Oxford Brookes
University. Donald is also the Chair
of Oxford Gastronomica.
Trophies were hand-made using
reclaimed or sustainable wood by
Ian Smith, artist in residence at
Rycotewood Furniture Centre,
Oxford and Cherwell Valley
College. SAE composed music
specifically for the Awards.
There were eight categories
plus two special achievement
Awards. The first of these was
presented to George Dailey of
The Bell at Hampton Poyle.
George received his award for
Outstanding Contribution from
Alain Desenclos, the Awards
Committee Chairman. It was then
Alain’s turn to be recognised for his
Outstanding Service, and as guest
presenter, Raymond Blanc OBE,
commented before handing Alain
his award, “Alain has most
probably served every one of you
here today.” Raymond and Alain
were then photographed together
as La Marseillaise, the French
National Anthem, played in the
background.
Biggest winners of the night were
The Feathered Nest who scooped
the top prize of Restaurant of the
Year and Best British Restaurant,
followed by Pierre Victoire
who were ‘victorious’ in the
Best European and Public Vote
categories – the latter with 488
Well we did it! 248 days after the first meeting was held to look into the possibility of staging the Awards, we
pulled it off, not without the extraordinary help of our friends at Malmaison and Oxford Castle, not to mention

votes! (over 7,500 votes were cast
in total). Zoe Naylor, Financial
Controller of Miele, presented the
winners with their trophy. A full
list of results is provided below.
Special guests presented the
Awards alongside each category
sponsor. Guests included Jeremy
Mogford (founder of Browns and
owner of The Mogford Group), Jo
Thoenes (of BBC Radio Oxford),
Raymond Blanc OBE, Robert B.
Cook (Chief Executive Officer of
Malmaison), Sir John Madejski
(chairman and director of 18
companies including Reading FC
and BGP Group), Felicity Lusk
(Head of Abingdon School), Martin
Keown (ex Aston Villa, Arsenal and
England professional footballer
and now television and radio
analyst), Sally Dicketts (Principal of
Oxford and Cherwell Valley
College) and Trevor Osborne
(developer of Oxford Castle and
Chairman of The Trevor Osborne
Property Group).
Malmaison hosted the event and
Head Chef Russell Heeley
masterminded the unenviable task
of feeding his peers but, with the
help of General Manager, Mark
McSorley, John Ryan, Suzanne
Port, Suzy Bramfitt and a team of
over sixty staff, ensured that
Malmaison were deserving of the
utmost praise from all of those in
attendance.
Category sponsors included FN
Foods, Brakspear, Blueprint, JACK
fm, Bean Bags and B4 Magazine.
New Folium Marquees and
Beautiful Chair Covers were
instrumental in creating a stunning
scene for the guests and the event
was co-ordinated by Tina Rosser of
TERA Events. Local suppliers also
included Blueprint, City Audio
Visual, Oxford Event Hire, Studio 8
and SAE. The Oxford Actors
Network, Illuminate, The Oxford
Wine Company, Guylian, Stones
the Printers, PresstoPrint, and
Tamara Taboas also played
significant parts in ensuring the
Awards were a success.
The independent committee who
were responsible for deciding the
winners of each category, were as
follows: Susi Golding (Visit
Oxfordshire); Julie Archer (Meet
Oxfordshire); Jacquie Bugeja
(Oxfordshire Registration Service);
Donald Sloan (Oxford Brookes);
Daren Bowyer (Pembroke
College); David Gambier (Great
Experience Travel); Mark Taylor
(Darbys) and Mark Ritchie.
Macmillan Cancer Support were
the beneficiaries of the raffle
which included the star prize
generously donated by Baglioni
Hotels – two nights at The Relais
Santa Croce in Florence.
Event organiser, Richard Rosser,
Managing Director of The In
Oxford Group, commented. “We
couldn’t have hoped for a better
first year. There was a huge
amount of work to undertake to
make sure that we established a
great platform for the Awards to
continue long into the future. We
have received an amazing flood of
compliments about the Awards,
which is down to everyone
involved. It was certainly a team
effort!”

coveted "Oxfordshire Restaurant Of The Year" award.
This is especially rewarding considering that we only

to thank all our staff without whom this would not
have been possible. These awards are a reflection of
their hard work and dedication to "The Nest". I also
wish to take this opportunity to thank you, all our

The National School of Furniture,
based at Oxford and Cherwell
Valley College, has again kindly
provided the Awards for this year.
Craftsmen in Residence, Thomas
Jones and Michael Sewell, had
far from an extensive brief, as
Thomas explains.
“The brief was simple and to the
point, ‘make some awards’! Mike
and I came up with what seemed
an obvious theme, basing the
awards around the Olympic rings
and plates. We both did some
sketches and came up with some
oak prototypes before moving to
walnut because it’s a lot richer and
more luxurious. We hope that we
have created individual awards
with a unique look and feel. Each
trophy has been made by hand, as
the best food is, and uses only
reclaimed or sustainable wood to
ensure ecological credentials are
met, again another link between
the materials we use and modern
food that is more ecologically
farmed.”
Mike explains how it is great to be
part of a live project. “Most of what
we do is course work without the
end product seeing the light of day.
This is a great project as we
know we could be walking into
Oxfordshire restaurants with our
work on display. It’s been a
rewarding challenge.”
With thanks to Thomas, Mike,
Chris Hyde and Sally Dicketts at
