The purpose of Family Wellness Ministry is to connect individuals, couples, families, and clergy through the heart toward healthy Christ-centered relationships. This was the third in a series of four conferences held this year in the Metropolis of San Francisco. The conferences are designed to both teach how we can build stronger families and adopt family wellness as a way of being in our parishes. The theme was based on the parable of the good samaritan who, upon seeing a stripped, wounded, and half-dead man, went to him, bandaged his wounds, and took him to a local inn to recover. ( Luke 10:25-37) The thieves who attacked the man symbolize the dark spiritual forces working to tear us away from God. The more we are separated from God the more we are more subject to our passions and the more we sin. The devil attacks us where we are weakest – our passions – using them to destroy our souls. When he does this we become like the man who is stripped and beaten. For example, if I have low self-esteem, the devil may constantly feed the thoughts that tell me I dont matter. If I listen to those thoughts, I tend to feel shame. Shame means that I feel bad about who I am. It causes me to hide those feelings of low self-esteem. Like the man stripped of his clothes, I dont want anyone to see me in this state. To make up for this I turn to the passions, or compulsions, which seem to fill me up or make me feel better for a time. But that feeling is short-lived. In this sense they make me like the half dead man. I am alive enough to act on my compulsions, but dead enough not to stop them. The good news is that Christ, who is symbolized by the good samaritan, is there to meet us in our passions. He does not want us to feel shame, nor does he want us to live in this half-dead state. A relationship with Christ is where we see and are seen. Shame tells us a different story. Shame says that if you see me as I really am (sins and all), then you wont love me. This of course is a lie. Christ did not come to judge, Christ came to meet us where we are, care for us, bandage our wounds, and give us that time to heal. Christ says, I want to see you and love you.We understand this in the final exchange between Christ and the lawyer. Christ says, “‘So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves? And he said, He who showed mercy on him. Then Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise. ’” Christ wants us to show mercy to each other. We do this by crossing the street the way the good samaritan did, engaging with each other in mercy and love. This is the essence of the family wellness ministrys slogan – Face to face and heart to heart. There were many more thought-provoking discussions at the conference, built on the idea of meeting each other face to face and heart to heart. Even with almost one hundred people in attendance (the largest group yet at this confer- ence series), we joined in activities where we were able to do what the speak- ers were talking about. We got to know each other, in some part, on a deeper level and really connect. We walked away with great ideas as to how we can start doing this in our own homes and at Saint Demetrios. Face to Face – Heart to Heart

I n September I had the pleasure to attend the first Metropolis Family Wellness Conference in the Pacific Northwest at Holy Apostles Greek

Orthodox Church in Shoreline. The purpose of Family Wellness Ministry is to “connect individuals, couples, families, and clergy through the heart toward healthy Christ-centered relationships.” This was the third in a series of four conferences held this year in the Metropolis of San Francisco. (Luke 10:25-37) The thieves who attacked the man symbolize the dark spiritual forces working to tear us away from God. The more we are separated from God the more we are more subject to our passions and the more we sin. The devil attacks us where we are weakest – our passions – using them to destroy our souls. When he does this we become like the man who is stripped and beaten. For example, if I have low self-esteem, the devil may constantly feed the thoughts that tell me I don’t matter. If I listen to those thoughts, I tend to feel shame. Shame means that I feel bad about who I am. It causes me to hide those feelings of low self-esteem. Like the man stripped of his clothes, I don’t want anyone to see me in this state. Shame says that if you see me as I really am (sins and all), then you won’t love me. This of course is a lie. Christ did not come to judge, Christ came to meet us where we are, care for us, bandage our wounds, and give us that time to heal. Christ says, “I want to see you and love you.” We understand this in the final exchange between Christ and the lawyer. Christ says, “‘So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?’ And he said, ‘He who showed mercy on him.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’” Christ wants us to show mercy to each other. We do this by crossing the street the way the good samaritan did, engaging with each other in mercy and love. This is the essence of the family wellness ministry’s slogan – “Face to face and heart to heart.” There were many more thought-provoking discussions at the conference, built on the idea of meeting each other face to face and heart to heart. Orthodox Home Fellowship

A n exciting new ministry is beginning this Fall called Orthodox Home Fellowship. The idea is to bring people together for fellowship in a home of one of our church families, to spend time with one another, have a meal, and have a presentation on a

topic relevant to all of us regarding our Orthodox Christian Faith. We hope to do this on a regular basis, every four to six weeks or so. The first event will take place at the home of Chris and Vicki Pallis, on November 4th, 2017. A potluck meal will be served. We will have a very special guest and presenter to lead our first OHF, and that is Fr. Zacharias Zacharou of St. John the Baptist Monastery in Essex, England. Fr. Zacharias is a renowned theologian, and is the spiritual son of the late Elder Sophrony, and spiritual grandson of St. Silouan. He will be speaking to us about how to be an Orthodox Christian in the world today, with all it’s challenges. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to have an evening with your fellow friends from our parish, and an intimate evening with Fr. Zacharias. As the meal is potluck, we will need to know ahead of time who is coming and what you can bring for the meal. Please call the Pallis home at (206) 232-1113 or Vicki’s cell at (206) 948-2922 to rsvp. Their home address is 9600 SE 33rd Street, Mercer Island, WA 98040. Please note: for this event, a babysitting service is not provided.

BOOKSTORE NEWS

T hank you for your roles in making the 2017 Greek Festival a wonderful parish-wide experience and success. We also thank our many helpers: those who set up the festival bookstore in the library, those who worked at the festival, and those who

came the day after the festival to complete the inventory and return the remaining stock to its proper home in the bookstore by the elevator. Many hands make light work and add to the joy of it all. Your bookstore enjoyed sharing in the festival success and was blessed to receive several antique icons to sell. Many were purchased and will be enjoyed by loving owners. Four remain. If you are interested in these icons, please ask your bookstore staff to show them to you. The Orthodox crosses were also a hit. A few 14K gold baptismal crosses as well as some sterling silver crosses of various designs are still available, along with sterling silver chains from Italy. Many icons are also in stock and are set up alphabetically for the male and female saints as well as by topics such as Christ, Theotokos, Angels, and Feast Days. The bookstore is also filled with books covering a wide array of topics including parents dealing with critical illness, adoption, parenting and raising Orthodox children as well as books on the Orthodox faith, prayer, and personal experiences of monasti-cism today. Come on in and look for great children's books, gift items, personal prayer supplies, prayer books, and more. Young adults: look for Special Agents of Christ and Hear Me: A Prayer Book for Young Orthodox Adults. We will be placing replenishment orders in the near future, so please let your bookstore staff know if there is a book, icon, or gift item that you need.

Message from President Nina Once again I would like to thank all of the Philoptochos ladies who work so diligently year after year at our festival. They cook and bake all summer long and our church is known for the delicious results that sell out every year. Their cheerful faces are everywhere during the festival and I am so grateful for all their hard work on behalf of our parish. We could not do it without you, thank you ladies! Make a Difference with Philoptochos and the Children of Our Parish

At the National Board meeting held in New York City in May 2015, Author Nick Katsoris presented the Loukoumi Make A Difference Day Project which encourages children to do their very own good deed on National Make-A-Difference Day. In 2015 over 40,000 children participated in Make-A-Difference Day. The goal is to teach our children to do good deeds and to make a difference in the world. The presentation may be viewed at: http://bit.ly/1EZf9t1. Since 2015, a number of Philoptochos Chapters in several Metropolises successfully participated in Make-A-Difference Day, as did elementary schools nationwide and even in Greece. Our goal is to engage in this “cross-generational” initiative (i.e., Philoptochos and children), during the entire month of October, not only to make a difference but also to do so in honor of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios’ Name Day which is on October 26th. Since 2015, our Philoptochos has provided cards in which Sunday School students said “thank you” to Veterans for their service. The cards were then sent to the local VA hospital for distribution to the Vets. This year we will also again be making “get well cards” for patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital. As members of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society, we have always acted to alleviate suffering and provide comfort to all. Indeed, as Philoptochos chapters and members, distinguished by a long history of making a difference, we are the ideal partners for our children in this initiative, bringing together the energy of our youth and the talent and teaching of the Philoptochos. If you would like to join us on November 19th, please contact Susan Reichmann at [email protected] or call 425.772.1605.

Beginning in October we will meet to discuss Everywhere Present: Christianity in a One-Storey Universe by Stephen Freeman. If you would like to join us, please contact Lefteris Sitaras or Fr. Daniel Triant. Books are available at the St. Demetrios Bookstore. "Have you ever referred to God as the Man upstairs ? Most Chris-tians living in a secular society have unwittingly relegated God and all things spiritual to the second storey of the universe: a realm we cannot reach except through death. The effect of this is to banish God, along with the saints and angels, from our every-day lives. In Everywhere Present, popular blogger and podcaster Fr. Stephen Freeman makes a compelling case for becoming aware of God s living and active presence in every moment of our lives here and now. Learning to practice your Christian faith in a one-storey universe will change your life and make possible the living, intimate relationship with God you've always dreamed of."
