Fakahatchee Swamp Walk By Tom Haarsgaard Last year, due to Hurricane Wilma, I was not that saddened by the cancellation of the trip to the Fakahatchee. My recent expedition to the Fakahatchee, a few Sunday’s ago, was not without fear and trepidation. As the day grew near my fear of the unknown grew bigger and bigger. In my mind I kept thinking about those old Tarzan movies with Johnny Weissmuller wrestling the alligators and ten foot snakes. I had to remain calm and put on a macho front for my wife Jane, oops I mean Laurie. Then the day came. It was do or die. When we got to the Park Ranger’s office, our guide Mike Owen, handed out walking sticks. He told us it was to help us balance ourselves as we moved through the swamp due to Cypress Tree Roots and sometimes a mucky bottom. He said something about three points being better than just your two feet. Anyway I figured it was my only weapon and guess what? I got the shortest stick! Mike gave us a brief orientation about the sponge like qualities of the hundreds of years of falling leaves from all of the deciduous trees. Then we all hopped into our cars and drove to a spot where we parked our cars and began our adventure. About a half mile walk up the road from where we parked our cars, we came to an area where we could easily step into the water. It was a beautiful day. The temperature was in the low eighties with very little humidity. As I stepped into the tea colored water, it took only a moment to realize that I was wet up to my thighs. The water wasn’t as cold as I thought it would be. In fact it was very refreshing after the fifteen minute walk on the road. Once I got my swamp legs, I realized I had entered a place where most people fear to go. I have traveled to many places over the years, but nothing compared to this wonderful place and to think …it was in my own backyard. We spent the next ninety minutes learning about our surrounding’s and the wonders of nature, not to mention some gorgeous orchids. The Grand Bromeliads, Monarch Butterflies, Giant Air Plants and rare ferns were just as fabulous! We stopped often to take in our surroundings. It was like trying to find the hidden treasures in a picture. I was even complemented by Ranger Mike on my ability to spot a dead Ghost Orchid. My wife chimed in “that’s Tom’s specialty. You should see all the dead orchids in our backyard”. Next year I am driving with someone else. It was a great trip with good company that I will always remember. Given the opportunity I will do it again. Oh by the way, the alligators must have heard I was coming because we didn’t see a one, but we did see a man-eating Crayfish.
