welcome to the 37th annual atlanta Jazz festival. when the first festival was held in 1978, few could have imagined that this event would become one of the country’s largest free jazz festivals. as a strong supporter of atlanta’s vibrant music and arts community, i am proud to welcome the atlanta Jazz festival back again, and i hope to see this tradition preserved for generations to come.

The atlanta Jazz festival provides a wonderful opportunity for artists to express themselves and connect with a diverse audience of music lovers. it also allows our youth to perform and learn from these renowned artists. and ultimately, the festival brings our community closer together.

we hope you will enjoy the free performances at some of our most beautiful parks, and i urge you take time to experience the many other unique amenities atlanta has to offer.

sincerely,

kasim reedmayor

The atlanta Jazz festival is a beloved tradition that celebrates the music and culture of jazz music, a unique american art form with southern roots. each year we bring this musical heritage to life through a weekend of concerts and performances of musicians heralded around the world.

This year, we are proud to continue that celebration and also highlight our very own accomplished jazz

musicians. for 2014, we have expanded the presentation to include jazz artists who live and play right here in atlanta. on our local stage, we will meet artists who love jazz and love atlanta as much as we do.

on our main and local stages, you will find the same high level of talent and musical excitement that you have come to expect from atlanta Jazz festival.

we want to thank all of our sponsors and patrons for their continued support to maintain this vital piece of atlanta culture. we also want to thank all of you for joining us each year, bringing your family and friends and making atlanta Jazz festival a destination experience year after year.

Nope. All it takes is a scratch or two. Because every time you play the Lottery, Georgia kids are the real winners. That’s because for over 20 years the Georgia Lottery has contributed more than $15 billion to education. On top of that, 1.6 million HOPE scholars have gone to college and 1.3 million 4-year-olds have attended a Lottery-funded Pre-K Program. That qualifi es as a rocket booster in our book.

atlanta Jazz festival is produced by the city of atlanta mayor’s

office of cultural affairs, and it is free and open to the public.

established in 1978, atlanta Jazz festival has become a tradition

that draws music lovers from all around the region to experience

the latest and greatest in jazz music culture. mayor maynard

Jackson founded the jazz festival with the idea to spotlight jazz

in the city, because, as he said, “Jazz music is america’s only

original art form, and…atlanta, with its growing reputation as

an international center of the arts and education, has both the

opportunity and the responsibility to promote an art form whose

roots are indigenous to the south.”

since then, atlanta Jazz festival has hosted luminaries of the jazz

music tradition including, lionel hampton (1980), dizzy gillespie

(1988/1990), wynton marsalis (1989), nina simone (2000), ray

charles (2002), miles davis (1983), herbie hancock (2000) and

many, many more.

The city’s commitment to present a free jazz festival, as it was

originally named “The atlanta free Jazz festival,” is representative

of a commitment to ensure that everyone who resides and visits

atlanta will have easy access to high quality cultural experiences.

atlanta Jazz festival is produced through the support of corporate

sponsorships as well as atlanta Jazz festival, inc., a non-profit

entity dedicated to preserving the legacy of the atlanta Jazz
