Dear O’Neal Community,

As headmaster, one of the most common questions I am asked by prospective and current parents is “Why is O’Neal the best school for my child?” While there are certainly a number of good answers, such as our strong academics, competitive athletics, creative arts and great faculty, I would like to address the question on a deeper level. The principle element that sets O’Neal apart from other schools is our focus on character development, or what we like to refer to as the O’Neal Way.

Students, faculty and administrators have spent a great deal of time this year discussing what it means to be an O’Neal student and to live by the O’Neal Way. On a basic level, we define this as being responsible and doing the right thing, even when the wrong thing is easier or more attractive. A simple lesson, to be sure, but one that often proves to be more difficult in practice than in theory. Doing what is right is often different from doing what is comfortable, and it takes a great deal of courage and strength of character to face this sort of adversity.

Arguably more important than having the strength to face adversity yourself is the ability to step up and help someone else who is struggling. O’Neal has an openly loving and supportive student community which recognizes that a heavy load is more manageable when many hands come together to carry the burden. O’Neal students do not turn a blind eye to someone in need, but rather, work together to support each other. I feel a great sense of pride when I see our students actively engaged in this esprit de corps on campus and hope that they will bring the O’Neal Way with them when they graduate and go out into the world.

New Orleans, more than any other city, embodies exactly what it means to face adversity head on and to employ the resilience needed to come out stronger in the end. In celebration of this spirit and how it reflects our O’Neal Way, we have chosen A Night in New Orleans as our 42nd Annual Auction theme. I hope you will join us at the Fair Barn in Pinehurst on Saturday, February 2nd for what will certainly be an exciting night.

As you read through our Annual Report I encourage you to take a moment to consider all of the individuals who have come together to support The O’Neal School. Generously donating time, energy and funds is the right thing to do, but rarely the easiest. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our supporters, who, like our students, live by the O’Neal Way.

Your Board of Trustees and I are very pleased with the start of another wonderful school year. O’Neal is truly an innovative institution and we are always happy to see such positive outcomes for our students. Your knowledge and support of O’Neal’s independent school culture truly contribute to the School’s continued success.

As you review the 2011-2012 Annual Report, I invite you to look at the many opportunities you have to become involved in the School and the many individuals who do so much to support our mission. From the Parents’ Association to the Booster Club to the talented faculty members who support our children in the classroom and out, we are truly fortunate to have such a dedicated community.

I would like to draw your attention to a few highlights from 2011-2012. Leadership giving at a level of $1,971 and above increased from ten to 21 donors and our average gift rate remained steady at $505 for the second year in a row. Teeda and Sal Nuzzo continued to provide their generous scholarships for four Upper School students to attend O’Neal. Our 41st Annual Auction, February Fiesta, raised over $184,000 and the $61,300 raised for Fund A Need allowed the School to establish a centralized media research center in the McMurray Library. Last but not least, of our 307 donors, 37 were new.

As we look to the future I am excited to announce that for 2012-2013 we already have 100% of the faculty and 100% of the Board of Trustees pledged to make a gift to the O’Neal Fund. As of October 31, 2012, we had achieved over 50% of our total $150,000 goal and are still going strong. We would love to see this year’s parent participation surpass last year’s level of 28%. The 42nd Annual Auction, A Night in New Orleans, is scheduled for February 2, 2013 at the Fair Barn in Pinehurst. The Auction is O’Neal’s largest annual fundraising event and I hope you will help us get in the spirit by volunteering, donating and attending. Tonya Hogan ’80 of Asheville, recently joined Mission Hospital Cancer Outpatient Infusion Center as a pharmacist.

Anne Ellis Friesen ‘81 of Pinehurst is the Executive Director of Friend to Friend a domestic violence and sexual assault services organization for Moore County. Recently she attended the Duke University Executive Certificate Leadership Program where she collaborated with non-profit leaders from around the world on strategies to increase impact on critical social problems.

Ashley Van Camp ’82 of Southern Pines loves being back with her O’Neal family. Her son Campbell is enrolled in the 8th grade and her daughter, Mary Chase is in 7th grade.

Connie Fleming Wright ’99 and her husband Andrew, of Richmond, VA welcomed their second baby girl on September 7, 2012. Sloane MacNaughton Wright weighed 9 lbs 7 ounces at 20 inches. Her big sister, Sidney celebrated her 2nd birthday on September 30.

Taylor Floyd Norbury ’02, resides in Savannah, GA with her husband Matt. They married June 1, 2012 in Charleston, SC. She is a territory manager with FreshPoint Produce, a division of Sysco foods. Matt is a Chief Warrant Officer 2 in the US Army and flies Kiowa OH-58 Delta Warriors. They are stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah. Matt will deploy to Afghanistan for a second time in late 2012.

Evan Fitzgerald ’04 of Richmond, VA became involved with many aspects of the power and gas utilities along with the power generation business for Dominion Resources. He is an energy trader in the wholesale market for Dominion Resources.

Celia Everett Carpenter ’03, of Beavercreek, Ohio is a practicing pharmacist for Target. Her husband Scott is a first year anesthesia resident with Kettering Health Network, primarily at Grandview and Southview hospitals in Dayton.

Jamaal Barnes ’05 of Boston, MA has been appointed assistant director of admissions at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. “I can’t tell you how excited

I am for this new role, which will allow me to continue my passion for providing educational opportunities for capable individuals.” He will continue to be involved with Crossroads for Kids as a partner. Jamaal is member of the Touchstone Discussion Project and the Alumni Advisory Board for the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.

Simon Cagle ’05 of Alexandria, VA relocated from New Jersey. He says, “It’s a great place because it’s a young population of educated college graduates. Everyone that lives around here has a passion for their work and it’s usually government related.” He plays in a varsity kickball league every week. “One of the best parts of DC is always having somewhere new to go eat and discover. It’s great always having something to do.” Simon works for Arrow International doing medical device sales. “I love it because I get to work with doctors showing them how to use different techniques and products that help save lives. I scrub into surgeries and get to watch first hand what my products are able to do for patients.”

Michael Cowherd ’05 and Jonathan Summey ’06 share an apartment in Chapel Hill. Mike is a third year medical student at UNC- Chapel Hill. He is hoping to focus on cardiology and pediatrics. Jonathan is currently the VP of sales at Business Insurers of the Carolinas.

Kelsey Bartiss ’06 of Chapel Hill will graduate in spring 2013 from UNC-Chapel Hill with a masters in information science.

Kate King ’06 of Southern Pines is a third year law student attending Campbell University School of Law.

Josh Wolonick ’08 recently relocated to New York City to pursue a career in acting. His most recent performance was in Romeo and Juliet at the Booth Amphitheater in Cary, NC.

Kitan Akinosho ’09 of Sanford, will graduate with a degree in operations research and financial engineering from Princeton in June 2013. After graduation she plans to take a year or two off before considering enrolling in medical school or grad school. She is a member of the Cap and Gown Eating Club.

Michael McGowan ’09 of Southern Pines was the lowest local finisher of the Men’s North and South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort this year. He also played in the US Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver.

O’Neal Homecoming and Alumni Social

Enjoy The O’Neal School’s Homecoming basketball games on Friday, January 4th against Faith Christian School in the gymnasium of the Hannah Center. Homecoming will be the culminating event for Spirit Week, a week of funny clothes and pep rallies. The Booster Club will host a pre-game dinner in the dining commons from 4:00-6:00pm. The crowning of the homecoming queen will follow the basketball games. After the game, join other alums at the 4th Annual Alumni Social at the Theater Lobby in the Han-nah Center – details will be mailed and emailed. Plan for an evening with other alumni, O’Neal faculty and adminis-tration.

AdmissionsThe 2012/13 school year started with 87 new students. Since the first day of school O’Neal has been fortunate to add 9 new students to the community bringing the total student population to 445!

Integrating and assimilating new students is a key initiative of the Admissions Office. In each school division a function is planned to bring the new students together. Lower School students were treated to an ice cream party, Middle School students enjoyed lunch in the Hannah Center and the Upper School students traveled by an O’Neal bus off campus for lunch. These activities allow the new students to mingle in a social setting.

Thank you for your continued support and for spreading the word about everything O’Neal has to offer. The admis-sion process for the 2013-14 school year had begun. If you know of a family who might be interested in O’Neal, please have them contact the Director of Admissions, Alice Drop-pers.

New Middle School Students

Students New to O’Neal 2012-2013

Since October of 2009, The O’Neal Lower School has been offering after school clubs for its students. The purpose of the program is to contribute to the development of the “whole child” by extending learning and enrichment activities beyond the regular school day with the intention of creating interest and learning opportunities, beyond the regular curriculum, within a caring environment. “The program was kicked off by having Lower School teachers supervise clubs that were more ‘fun and play’ based,” states Lower School Director, Linda Roberts. “The program has grown to become more ‘learning-based’ as a session may last for 6 to 10 weeks as opposed to the shorter 4-week clubs. If our teachers are not able to advise a particular club, we bring in the experts.”

This year’s first trimester was kicked off with Engineering Fundamentals with Legos, Battle of the Books, Ecology Club and Lower School Chorus.

Engineering Fundamentals with Legos is provided by Play-Well TEKnologies, offering project-based programs designed to teach principles and methods of engineering, architecture and science utilizing LEGOTM and other building systems. The projects are led by Play-Well staff members. At O’Neal, students in grades two through five could participate. It is offered for the first trimester only on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Miles Atrium of McMurray Hall.

Elementary Battle of the Books is offered to students in fourth and fifth grade. Librarian Lynn Bowness and Academic Enrichment Center teacher, Judi Arnold work with this team every Monday afternoon in McMurray Library to prepare for competition with other schools on their knowledge of

specific books. The first level of competition is scheduled for the first part of March 2013.

Lower School ClubsBuilding One by One

Ecology Club is a year long program offered to students in grades two through five. The advisor is Ben Kemp, fifth grade teacher and the club meets on Thursday afternoons in Mr. Kemp’s classroom. Its focus is to learn the importance of taking care of the earth through various projects and activities. The Ecology Club is responsible for taking each classroom’s recycling to the School’s main bin as well as watering the potted plants. They also discuss ways to better manage natural resources – such as water conservation.

Lower School Chorus is also a year-long offering directed by Lower School music teacher, June Gunter. It takes place on Tuesdays in Ms. Gunter’s classroom. Its purpose is to foster the love and enjoyment of singing by learning new songs and performing.

Second trimester the club program grows with: Photography Club, Spelling Club and Odyssey of the Mind.

Photography Club is offered in partnership with Sandhills Photography Club(SPC). Conducted by a SPC member and supervised by Spanish teacher, Christie Sellers or Lower School Director, Linda Roberts, students in grades three through five meet on specifically scheduled Tuesdays throughout the second trimester in Mrs. Sellers’ classroom. In addition to learning the functions of their camera, they will take a stroll around campus to photograph; they will learn how to download their photos to a computer and will conclude with selected students’ photos being entered into a community photography competition.

Spelling Club is offered by third grade teacher, Danielle Blue and Spanish teacher Christie Sellers. It takes place on Mondays in McMurray Hall with a purpose of assisting students in improving spelling and increasing vocabularies through spelling and vocabulary activities and spelling bee tips. It helps to prepare students for participation in the school spelling bee, perhaps leading to participation in the regional bee, aspiring to be a representative from O’Neal in the Scripps National Bee.

Odyssey of the Mind is a longtime event that O’Neal’s fourth and fifth grade students have been participants. This year is the first time in over five years, that the School has 3 teams. The teams will meet many times a week the first level of competition, which usually takes place during March. The director is former O’Neal teacher, Patti Dominguez. Odyssey of the Mind is an international organization that fosters creativity, divergent thinking and team building skills as students attempt to find solutions to specific problems. Teams of students at varying levels learn to provide creative, quick-witted responses in one area called Spontaneous. Once the team selects a problem they are involved in script writing, costume creation and prop and set design in the Long Term portion of the competition. Teams must act out their solution to the problem in an eight-minute skit. The over-all effect of their presentation, or style, is also evaluated.

O’Neal welcomes Andrea Smith as Director of Middle School. She comes to O’Neal from serving as an education consultant for Public Consulting Group in Nashville, Tennessee. Previously, she held positions as deputy head teacher as well as head of English at schools in London, England. Ms. Smith has participated in an exchange program, where she taught English in Rocky Mount, NC. She received her bachelor’s degree in social sciences from the University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Canada and a post graduate certificate in education from the University of Sthrathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom. After six weeks on the job, Director of Communications, Kathy Taylor (KT) took the opportunity to chat with Ms. Smith(AS).

KT: How have you adjusted to living in the Sandhills? AS: The people have been so friendly and welcoming. Everyone at school has made it easy for me to get settled with work. As for my living quarters, it took a little longer, but I’m finally settled and I feel at home.

KT: When you first visited O’Neal, what stood out the most?AS: The staff – and that is why I took the job. When I had the opportunity to meet with the leadership team, it was fantastic to realize that we shared the same philosophy

on education. When I visited O’Neal, I was considering an offer from a school in Dubai, but when I saw how my potential future colleagues were so “like-minded” - it sealed the deal.

KT: Your career has revolved around public school education, both in and outside of the United States. Having this experience, what do you hope to bring to O’Neal?AS: First of all, in contrast to work experience, my own educational upbringing was both independent and international; and with that, I hope to bring a different perspective from an international viewpoint. I want to promote excitement for travel, because learning different cultures breeds tolerance and contributes to the development of responsible citizens – which is why I started teaching in the first place.

KT: What are your main objectives for the first year on the job?AS: I’m taking the opportunity to get familiar with the culture – both of the school and of the community. I’m also spending time getting to understand O’Neal and everything it stands for. As an educator, you’re always thinking of how you can do something better. For the Middle School, I want to make the good things we’re doing, better. Much different from the consulting role I left, I am able to stay in one place, be a contributor as part of a team and see projects come to fruition. I actually get to be a part of the change.

KT: What changes do you hope to see for the Middle School over time? AS: I would like to see our student population expand and programs are always evolving, so I have my eye on a few.

KT: Where do you call home?AS: I have lived in many places, but I call London my home. I am an only child, my

cousins and I are very close, but friends are important to me. Even though I have friends all over the world, London is where the memories are.

KT: What are your hobbies or interests?AS: I love to travel and to hear live music, which is probably why I was lured to Nashville for my former job. Growing up in the UK, I sailed, but now I’m starting a new adventure – surfing. In fact, I plan to attend a surf camp at the coast this summer.

Patsy Bonsal was an O’Neal parent and played an integral part in founding the School. She served on O’Neal’s first Board of Trustees and held many other roles in helping to lead to O’Neal’s success. Mrs. Bonsal was also a strong supporter of Habitat for Humanity as she was asked to help initiate a Habitat affiliate in Moore County in 1987. After her passing in August of 2011, Moore County Habitat for Humanity held a spring gala called “Raising the Roof for Patsy’s House” to acknowledge Mrs. Bonsal’s efforts for more than 20 years of raising funds to build almost 200 Habitat for Humanity homes. Proceeds cleared $131,000 – which is enough to build two homes for those who currently live in substandard housing.

As a tribute to Mrs. Bonsal’s dedication to O’Neal, and to support a great cause, the School has chosen Habitat for Humanity as a major focus for community service. Habitat and O’Neal are working together to find ways for the O’Neal community, including students of younger ages, to be

involved in both builds for “Patsy’s House”. The project has been assigned to the Upper School O’Neal Volunteers Outreach Organization to

manage. Presently, students age 14 and older, O’Neal parents, faculty and staff are welcome to help volunteer.

The first O’Neal build was on Saturday, November 10th. Parents, faculty, staff and students joined in to help install windows among other tasks. The second build is scheduled for Saturday December 1st. Painting will be the project. To volunteer for an O’Neal build, register on the Habitat

for Humanity website( http://www.sandhillshabitat.org) and select an O’Neal build date.

Middle School Boys’ SoccerO’Neal Middle School boys’ soccer finished up another undefeated season by winning the SEMSAC Championship against Pope John Paul. They were 6-0 in conference games and 12-0 for the season. Even though sixth grade students Spencer Sullivan and Bennett Moore led the team’s scoring, each member of the team played an essential part in the season’s success. Highlights were dominant wins against Village Christian and Pope John Paul. “We played soccer using an attractive passing game, which is very different from the ‘kick it and run’ tactics often utilized, and requires a high caliber of player,” states Coach Ben Brown. “This difference in styles was often evident on the field, and happily our philosophy was validated by the success we had this season.” Coach Brown was assisted by Dave Williamson.

Middle School VolleyballThe Middle School girls’ volleyball team was coached by Cate Dahl and Ceci Liner, and they had a fun-filled season. Since many of the girls were new to the game, the focus this year was on skill development. Every member of the team gave excellent effort and demonstrated constant improvement. Captains Elle Dembosky and Kate Liner along with Rachel Carlson, Olivia Butters, Gracie Bell, Jessica Lange and Mackenzie Melton anchored the team throughout the season, and the girls earned an awesome victory in the final match against Liberty Christian.

JV Girls’ TennisThe O’Neal JV girls’ tennis team had a very successful season finishing undefeated in conference play. Coached by Shane Moubry, the team had 2 additional wins over Freedom Christian out of Fayetteville. All the girls competed against each other in weekly challenge matches as well. Everyone from number 1 to number 12 showed great improvement throughout the season. The team was also fortunate to have 2 foreign exchange students this year competing and learning the game. Gillian Munro played number 1 all year and was undefeated, including 2 wins over Pinecrest. Her future along with the entire JV Girls Team is very bright.

JV Girls’ VolleyballThe JV volleyball team was a young, inexperienced team this year. Comprised of 2 - 8th graders, 8 - 9th graders and 1 - sophomore, the girls started the season with minimal prior volleyball knowledge. While their record may not show a successful season, all the girls improved tremendously and learned a lot about the sport of volleyball. The goal for this season was not only to become better volleyball players, but to become better teammates and people. Every girl on the team accomplished these goals! The team was coached by O’Neal parent, Gigi Ehlers. Their final overall record was 5-12, conference record was 3-7.

JV Boys’ SoccerO’Neal started a new JV soccer program beginning in August with 12 players who had limited soccer experience. They ended the season with all players improving and performing as a team. What they lacked in experience was made up with hard work at every practice which enabled them to develop their skills. By the end of the season, the players came together as a team and produced some well executed soccer plays that

enabled them to compete against more skilled players. Their coach, O’Neal parent, Lloyd Sullivan, told them”this season is not about the wins or loses but developing their soccer skills so they may compete at the varsity level”. All the boys had a very good season and four were recognized at the athletic banquet for their outstanding achievement. They were Kyle McClelland – Offensive Player of the Year, Christopher Dymond – Defensive Player of the Year, Pait Bryan – Leadership Award and William Lucas – Most Improved.

AthleticsVarsity Girls’ TennisThe O’Neal varsity girl’s tennis team, under the direction of new head coach Carl Bryan, finished with an 11-5 overall record and were Conference Runner-Ups for the 2012-13 season. Greyson Keel, Emma Gentry Landry, and Sophia Renner were named CFIC All conference and Kennon Later was named CFIC All Conference Honorable Mention. Coach Bryan was awarded CFIC Coach of the Year for Varsity Girl’s Tennis. With such a strong regular season, it resulted in their being the #1 2A team out of the conference going to the State Championships in Rocky Mount, NC. 4 out of the top 6 O’Neal players were seeded players (EG Landry#2, Sophia Renner #4, Kennon Later #3, and Dana Averbook#2) thus giving them first round byes in the state tournament, and #2 seed in the 6th flight, Dana Averbook, made it to the semi-final match on the second day of competition. Though they came up short in a state championship bid, the experience was very rewarding and it provided the team several significant goals for next year’s season.

Varsity VolleyballThe O’Neal varsity volleyball team had a very young team this year with a 10-8 overall record. The team consisted of four juniors, five sophomores, two freshmen and one eighth grader. Every game they played was a game of new experiences to put underneath their belts. The team had several girls that switched positions during the middle of the year and a couple of girls were brought up from JV to raise the level of play. To any other team this would be a recipe for disaster, however, these girls rose to the challenge and did what was best for their team. There were many memorable moments, like, the look on Harrells face when they lost 3-1, the benches cheering routines, pink out t-shirts/decorating night, and team dinners. Outside freshman hitter Katja Elhers received All Conference and sophomore Taylor Shelton received Honorable Mention. Coach Harper believes that this volleyball season with such a young team was a good “experience year” for the girls. Coach Harper looks forward to having the same group again for next volleyball season.

Varsity Boys’ Soccer13-5 overall record, CFIC runners-up, a state playoff birth for the third year in a row, 62 goals scored to 28 allowed, 4 all-conference players, 1 honorable mention, 2 all-state players; these statistics are proof to the success of this year’s O’Neal varsity boys’ soccer season. However, the team judges its success based on effort, class, positivity with each other, and desire to win. In these categories, this year’s team was

undefeated. Under the leadership of strong seniors and captains who have fought for four years to rebuild this program, and with the effort of younger players who are rising up to carry on the torch, the team has made great progress this year in building a culture of

hard work, respect, and an unquestionable desire to win. Their efforts have led to great success in the more traditional sense, and make no mistake their goal is state championships. But above all else the team strives to win in its own categories of what defines success.

Cross CountryThe 2012 season saw more new joins to the team than in recent memory. It was an

opportunity for young team members to step into leadership positions for the first time while newcomers to the School found their footing in a shared struggle and a common goal. Posting highest marks for the season were junior Andy Smetana, who earned all conference honors, and freshman Hunter Atkinson who placed all-conference and also set the third fastest time seen by a Lady Falcon cross country runner. This year’s runners have vested a great deal of pride in each other and hope to recruit well ahead of the spring’s track and field season. The team was coached by Josh Roberts with assistance from Laura Kerr.

Ben Brown was born and grew up in the west of England, in the town where part of Harry Potter was filmed, though he hasn’t read any of the books. Spending three years in London for his undergradu-ate degree, Ben had many opportunities to travel, play soccer, and combine the two. On one particularly memorable occasion,

this travel led to him accidentally befriending a member of the Dutch royal family whilst kayaking in the Swiss Alps. Relocating to New Jersey for his graduate degree, Ben had another brush with fame when he took a class with Snooki before she was Snooki. Scarred by this experience, he decided to move to North Carolina, where he has been teaching and coaching soccer ever since.

Carl Bryan, physical education teach-er and coach, received his BA in political science and physical education, exercise and sport science in 1990 from the Univer-sity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Also at UNC, he received his MA in physical education, exercise and sport science in

1992. Carl had the unique experience in his MA studies of being on the ground level of the World League of American Football (now known as NFL - Europe) working with the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks. Carl had been with Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) since 1992 as a PE instructor and finished his 20 year service there as the Dean of Student Learning. In 2010, he was named one of the top five community college instructors of the year. Carl holds many credentials in coaching a variety of sports and was recently awarded the Cape Fear Independent Conference Coach of the Year in Varsity Women’s Tennis. Carl is married to Wendy W. Bryan, a Yearbook and English instructor at O’Neal, and has two children, Pait (13-years-old) and Carrie Ellen (6-years-old).

Julie Cencer joins the Academic Enrichment Center (AEC) Department this year with 9 years of teaching experience. Upon graduating from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 2003, Ms. Cencer moved to North Carolina to launch her

teaching career. She taught at Middle Creek High School in Apex, North Carolina before moving to Moore County in 2004. Ms. Cencer taught English at Union Pines High School in Cameron, North Carolina for 7 years. She was named “Teacher of the Year” at Union Pines during the 2009-2010 school year, and went on to be named “Moore County Schools Alternate Teacher of the Year.” Ms. Cencer earned her Master of School Administration degree from UNC-Pembroke in 2011. She enjoys cheering on her Mich-igan sports teams, as well as spending time with her parents and her Shih-Tzu puppy, Finnegan. She looks forward to starting her doctorate degree in 2013.

Ricky Fisher has joined O’Neal maintenance department. He has lived in Fayetteville most of his life. His father was a Sgt Major commanding officer for 32 years. In his spare time, he enjoys rid-ing his Harley and participating in many charity events. He also enjoys working on vehicles and helping others. Ricky has

been married for 20 years and has 3 stepsons all of which have spent time in the service.

Meet New Faculty and Staff for 2012/2013

Victoria (Vicky) Grimm joins O’Neal as a fifth grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher. Mrs. Grimm was born and raised in Costa Rica. She earned her bachelors degree in Com-munications from Kansas State Univer-sity. She also earned a masters degree in International Relations from Troy State

and recently finished a second master’s degree in Inter-national Education from Framingham University. She recently returned from 13 years overseas, seven of which she worked with the Department of State. Mrs. Grimm has 9 years of teaching experience both in the United States and in overseas schools. Vicky and her husband have two children both of whom attend O’Neal. She enjoys playing tennis and jogging with her two dogs, Jack and Sammy.

Wendy Howes, teaching assistant for Pre-K3, is originally from Grinnell, Iowa. She received her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and social work from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. After marrying into the Navy, a teach-ing career seemed more suitable. So she

went to National University in San Diego, CA to earn her elementary education teaching credential. Since then, she has had two children and has lived and taught in Virginia and Maine. She dropped out of the workforce to manage the family as the Navy moved them to Spain, Washington State (twice) and North Carolina (twice). Wendy’s daugh-ter, Zoie is in O’Neal sixth grade. Wendy is super excited to be Penny Vest’s assistant in Pre-K3 and is extremely honored to be a part of the O’Neal team.

Benjamin Kemp is the new 5th grade math/science teacher in the Lower School. He joins the O’Neal staff after spending 7 years as a math/social studies teacher at New Century Middle School in Cameron. Mr. Kemp is originally from Northeast Ohio and holds degrees from

Miami University and Kent State University. He has two step-daughters who are currently attending O’Neal, Avery in the 1st grade and Sierra in the 8th grade. When he is not teaching, Mr. Kemp enjoys spending time with family and playing golf. He also enjoys watching as many baseball and basketball games as possible!!

Mitch Poole was born in Birming-ham, Alabama but was raised in Bel Air, Maryland. He attended Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, VA where he studied mathematics and Spanish. He played collegiate lacrosse for two years and spent a semester abroad in

Salamanca, Spain. Mitch graduated with a bachelor of sci-ence in mathematics and Spanish. This is Mitch’s first year teaching and has just recently moved into the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area. Mitch is a mathematics teacher at The O’Neal School and also serves as the assistant coach for the varsity boys’ basketball team.

Sally Wood returns to O’Neal to teach Pre-K4 after a small break. Sally has taught Pre-K4 for many years. Wel-come back Sally!

As a result of last year’s auction “Fund a Need” earnings, the McMurray Library is quickly evolving to a media center as it is now equipped with 25 new “All-in-One” com-puters. To be exact, there are 18 new IMacs and 7 new Lenovos. With study halls now be-ing conducted in the library, the large number of computers as well as library resources allow for students to have everything they need for research and other school projects at their fingertips. Also with the technology funds, a variation of the Smart Technology called a SMART Interactive projector has been installed into three classrooms. In addition, the fifth grade teachers have been purchased laptops. Two - 20-count Ipad carts have been purchased for Lower and Middle Schools allowing for a more interactive and conducive learning environment for today’s digitally-engaged students.

Preparations for The O’Neal School’s 42nd Annual Auction, A Night in New Orleans, are in full swing! The Auction will take place on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Fair Barn in Pinehurst, NC. On Fri-day, February 1st we will have an Auction Preview featuring student entertainment, auction items and giveaways from local businesses. We invite you to mark your calendars to attend these special events.

We have a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers on the Auction Committee who are hard at work soliciting donations, planning the Auction Preview, designing the decorations, coordinating student projects and more! Financial support through O’Neal’s Busi-ness Sponsorship Program has been successful this year and we encourage all local businesses to consider partnering with O’Neal. O’Neal could not host this annual auction without support from the local business community and O’Neal parents.

As always, the $10,000 Cash Raffle and the Jewelry Raffle will be highlights of the Auction. This year our $10,000 Cash Raffle is lim-ited to 300 participants, increasing your odds of winning. Tickets for the $10,000 are just $100. The Jewelry Raffle item, donated by Honeycutt Jewelers on Broad Street in Southern Pines, is a gorgeous sapphire and diamond pendant by Gabriel & Co. Tickets for the Jewelry Raffle will be $60 each or two for $100. The winners for both raffles will be selected at the Auction.

At 6:00 pm on Saturday, February 2nd the spirit of New Orleans will be enjoyed by all as the Auction kicks into high gear. The Faculty Jazz Quartet will be present to help get us in the mood with some wonderful New Orleans Jazz and Chef Mark Elliott will provide a delicious tapas dinner featuring a variety of New Orleans delicacies and libations. The bidding will start with the marvelous Silent Auction items and end with a fabulous Live Auction complete with vacation homes, trips, and one-of-a-kind experiences.

The Auction is O’Neal’s largest annual event and we hope you will help us get in the spirit by volunteering for the Auction Committee, collecting and donating auction items, purchasing a $10,000 Cash Raffle ticket, joining our Business Sponsorship Program, attending the auction and bidding on auction items.
