OurChairman’sMessage

As Chairman, it is my pleasure and privilege to present the 2008 Annual Report of the Oklahoma City Geological Foundation.

The Annual Report will serve to update you on the activities of the Foundation over the past year, as well as provide the Directors with the opportunity to honor those donors whose contributions have been instrumental in the growth and accomplish-ments of the Foundation in 2007.

In 2007, the Foundation received the largest amount of donations in our history and our growth can be directly attributed to our expanding base of supporters, like you. This growth translates into greater financial aid to teachers, students, schools, and universities. Your donations will energize the next generation of leaders and will help to fulfill the education dreams of many students who might not otherwise have had the opportunity if it were not for your generosity.

What lies ahead for the year 2008? As most of you are aware, two new programs were introduced in 2007: the Kenneth Stewart Cronin Lecture Series; and the Legends’ Dinner. Both of these events were tremendous suc-cesses and will be presented again in 2008.

Our Spring 2008 Awards Banquet will be held in conjunction with the Lecture Series event. The Lecture and Banquet will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2008, at the Oklahoma History Center, and we’re reserving a seat for each of you.

And, of course, our primary focus through the course of this year will be to continue the expansion of our scholarship and endowment programs. We will release announcements throughout the year on each as infor-mation becomes available and progress is achieved.

The Directors are excited about 2008 and we hope you share our enthusiasm. The record-setting growth our Foundation has experienced over the last twelve months is a direct result of the continued support from our donors. The difference your donations are making in the lives of Oklahoma students is truly significant.

On behalf of the Oklahoma City Geological Foundation and its Directors, thank you for your support and generous gifts in the past and we look forward to your continued support of the Foundation in the future as we improve the lives of students throughout Oklahoma.

Warm Personal Regards,

Thomas C. Cronin, Chairman 1

Our Mission

Our Vision

The Oklahoma City Geological Foundation is a tax exempt organiza-tion created in 1993 to assist the Oklahoma City Geological Society by providing a source of funding for charitable, scientific, literary and educational activities. All of these programs were designed to benefit those involved in the science of geology.

Since 1996, the Foundation has provided annual scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, and Tulsa University. These programs have been directed through the long standing Frederick H. and Lois M. Kate Endowment, and the Suzanne Takken Memorial Fund.

The Foundation also provides funds for annual Science Fair Awards to pre-college students throughout Oklahoma. The Foundation con-tinues to support educational projects for teachers, technical publica-tions, and various financial requirements of the Oklahoma City Geo-logical Society and the Society’s Library.

In early 2006, the Foundation expanded the science fair awards through the Excellence in Earth Science Education Awards (EESE) and the newly created Kate Excellence in Earth Science Education Award. The Beth Cronin Elementary School Endowment was created to assist the science programs in elementary schools. The Kenneth Stewart Cronin Lecture Series was started to provide timely and in-formative presentations by individuals with national and international

credentials with emphasis on oil and gas exploration.

The Herbert G. and Shirley A. Davis Oklahoma State University Geology Scholarship was established in late 2007 to support the financial needs of undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the University’s geology programs.

The Directors are committed to the growth of the Foundation by expanding traditional programs and establishing new ones, while ever mindful of the mission of the Foundation and the ultimate goal to improve the lives of the students throughout Oklahoma.

The Foundation began establishing Undergraduate, Graduate and Summer

Field Camp programs at all three, Oklahoma universities in 2007.

OurCharterMemberHeritageAs we celebrate another successful year for the Oklahoma City Geological Foundation, we wish to acknowledge those people whose vision have brought us here.

The future of the Foundation is extremely bright as a result of the financial commitment and the initial measures our Charter Members set into motion.

They recognized that the key to a quality education in the field of geology, then and in the future, must anticipate the ever changing demands of our society. As a result, financial support will always be a necessity of most students who want to pursue a career in geology and related fields of science.

On behalf of the current Directors and supporters of the Okla-homa City Geological Foundation, thank you for your financial support and leadership so generously provided in the early days of the Foundation’s development.

The Foundation has divided all its Endowments, Grants, Funds, Awards, and Programs into two Program categories:

Allocated Programs Allocated Programs are so designated as to allow for their distributable proceeds to be utilized solely for the purpose(s) designated by the Donor. These Programs are routinely used to honor or remember a family member, friend, or colleague, and direct the distributable proceeds to a specific school, university, or organization.

Non-Allocated Programs Non-Allocated Programs are not restricted or designated to a single objective. These Programs can be named or unnamed and their distributable proceeds are released at the discretion of the Foundation’s Directors.

The Foundation will accept donations of cash and non-cash assets to existing Allocated and Non-Al-located Programs. Donations may also be used to create a new Program with a minimum initial donation of $15,000. All Programs will be governed by an Agreement between the Donor and the Foundation to insure that the donation will be protected and avail-able for its intended purpose into the future.

In 2007, the Directors of the Foundation established the Personalized Scholarship Program (PSP).

The PSP allows a Donor to commit funds to either an Allocated or Non-Allocated Program over a period of time, while not requiring the Donor to commit large

sums of capital that would normally be necessary when establishing a permanent Program.

PSP donations can be made to supplement existing Programs or for other purposes (named or unnamed) as the Donor designates. A donation made to a PSP is normally expended in the year the Program is established. In the case where the donation is received late in the year, funds may be expended in the following year.

It is the goal of the Foundation to preserve and grow the principal of each Program, protect it against inflation, and assure that a continuing source of distributable income is available for many years into the future.

If you would like to establish a Program with the Foundation, contribute to an existing Program, or desire more information; please call a Director of the Foundation (see Page 2 of this Annual Report for the Directors’ contact information).

The Frederick H. and Lois M. KateEndowment Awards

The Fredrick H. and Lois M. Kate Endowment was established in May, 1996, by Fritz and Lois Kate to en-dow pre-college award programs of the Oklahoma City Geological Society. The Kates continued to fund the endowment and ultimately expanded the grants-in-aid to include two college level awards. The success with this endowment was instrumental in the creation of future endowments of the Oklahoma City Geologic Founda-tion. Just recently, the Foundation added a Kate Excel-lence in Earth Science Education Award.

Fritz Kate was a very active member of the Oklahoma City Geological community and a member of the Okla-homa City Geological Society. He was recognized as an honorary member of the Geological Society in 2001. The Foundation honored Mr. Kate at its inaugural Leg-ends’ event in November of 2007. Fritz Kate died in 2003.

The Oklahoma City Geological Foundation,

Excellence In Earth ScienceEducation Awards

The Oklahoma City Geological Foundation Excel-lence in Earth Science Education Awards were estab-lished in 2006 by Jason Hamilton, and were created to recognize Middle and High School earth science teachers and students for their accomplishments in earth science. Jason Hamilton has served as Chair-man of the Grants-In-Aid Committee since 1991. Mr. Hamilton seeks to expand the Science Fair Awards Program, which the Oklahoma City Geological Soci-

ety began in 1956. Additional funding for this endowment was provided by the Oklahoma City Geological Foundation.

The Suzanne TakkenMemorial Fund

The Suzanne Takken Memorial Fund was established and initially funded in 1998, by Bonnie and Dennis Smith, Ralph Espach, and Bob Northcutt. The Suzanne Takken Memorial Fund is in memory of Suzanne Takken who died in 1997. The endowment provides yearly grants-in-aid to college-level women to encourage them to pursue careers in the geosciences.

Suzanne was an independent geologist for many years. She was an active member of the Oklahoma City Geological Society. She was recognized as an honorary member of the Oklahoma City Geological Society in 1983. The fund awarded its first grant in 1999 in Suzanne Takken’s name.

The 2007 Suzanne Takken Memorial Award winner, PrernaSingh, receives the ceremonial check for $5,000 from the Foundation’s Jason Hamilton.

By supporting Middle and High School Programs, the

Foundation strives to create a high level of excitementand desire in younger students for the geosciences.

The Kenneth Stewart CroninLecture Fund

The Kenneth Stewart Cronin Lecture Fund was estab-lished in 2006 by Thomas C. Cronin in honor and memory of his father, Kenneth Stewart Cronin. Mr. Cronin began his career with Pure Oil Company in 1934, in Tulsa, as a petroleum geologist. While at Pure, Mr. Cronin came under the influence and tutelage of the legendary oil find-ers Ira Cram and Theron Warsson. He explored domesti-cally, as well as internationally, and he and his teams were credited with a number of exploration successes, including West Poison Spider in Wyoming, Adena in Colorado, and Lisbon in Utah.

The Fund will underwrite and support the Foundation’s ongoing effort to disseminate current geologic informa-tion, with its primary emphasis on exploration and topics of high common interest within the geosciences.
