Digital Marketing Can Change Behaviour

C NNECT! 3FALL 2015

For all the effort that business leaders put into their digital marketing, the vastmajority overlook the most important goal: to change behaviour.

In all forms of marketing, we reach out to people to determine ifthey’re interested in our product or service—but are they a prospector aren’t they? If they are a prospect, then our goal is show them thatwe can help them. Once they believe us, we can complete themechanics required to close the sale.

The word “believe” is critical. Basically, beliefs are made up of bits ofevidence that people pick up over time. Together, these bits combineto shape a person’s perceptions. Beliefs are seldom accurate andsometimes difficult to change, but it can be done.

HERE’S HOW. When people are seeking information about a new person, product ororganization, their reflex is to search online.

Digital marketing gives you the opportunity to share the most reliable, powerful and relevant information so that prospects have what they need—either to develop their first belief about your product or service, or to changean existing belief.

Imagine that you have a reputation for being the highest-cost provider in yourmarket. Whether or not this is true is immaterial. The content that you share onlinecan help to reshape that belief. For example, you can provide lower cost options thatthe public may not be aware of, or you can better demonstrate the cost savings thatresult from your solution so that prospects can understand the true value of yourproduct.

Success requires that you carefully place the right digital content in the rightlocations. Possibilities include everything from your website and your social mediafeeds to articles, white papers, product demonstrations, testimonials, reviews andso on.

To focus the power of your digital marketing, clearly define what your prospectsneed to genuinely believe about your products and services, and then give them theevidence they need to shape that perception. A sustained, focused approach willtransform how your prospects see you.

In our upcoming one-day Digital Strategy Accelerator, you can learn how to apply these principles and other fundamentals of marketing in a sustained anddeliberate way.
