R ED D OOR HONOR THE PAST ~ CELEBRATE THE PRESENT ~ CREATE THE FUTURE I’m pleased to again report we are the outstanding fraternity at OSU for the 5 th consecutive year. Last spring OSU also presented us 14 individual awards for outstanding undergrads as well as 11 chapter awards including outstanding House Corporation. With 150 members we are still the largest fraternity on campus and our grades are highest among fraternities at 3.39. For spring quarter, the 33 brothers living in the chapter house compiled a 3.65. Traditionally, the brothers who live in the chapter house have the highest GPA of any of our options for living quarters. They seem to feed off each other! The first Sunday in August, I had the pleasure of attending the kick off of our recruiting season where incoming freshman, who have applied for one of our Balanced Man scholarships, are invited to learn more about the scholarship and our fraternity. As usual, these young men were all top notch leaders in their high school. The group that leads this discussion is also top notch of course since they were recruited the same way. Featured speakers were alumni brothers, Pat Klein, currently assistant women’s basketball coach at OSU and Dennis Kaps, who is managing partner of a recruitment firm and owner of two cross fit gyms. It should be noted these brothers just graduated in 2006/03. They each presented amazing success stories for the recruits. The session then broke out with recruits in one room and parents in another. I stayed in the parent room and Don Stenta, our Chapter Counselor and OSU Director of Recreational Sports, gave a tremendous presentation to the parents about the benefits we offer. This was followed by Sharrell Hassell-Goodman who spoke on Greek Life and pointed out we were the top fraternity on campus and a role model for others. Sharrell is OSU’s Director of Greek Life so her endorsement could not come from a better person! Then we were led in a discussion of how the recruitment program works by Sean Anthony ’06. Sean is a Dartmouth grad who was their VP Recruitment and went on to be a Director at Headquarters for 2 years. We grabbed him when he came here to work for Abercrombie and Fitch as a, you guessed it, recruiter. Sean has mentored our Recruitment VP’s for the last 5 years and has consistently led us to larger chapters. We are now the 6 th largest Sig Ep chapter in the country and we hold the highest gpa of the top 6. The afternoon was topped off by a presentation from Gene Smith, OSU’s well known Athletic Director. He did a great job focusing on leadership skills and the types of skills incoming freshmen should consider to be successful in college. Afterwards I met with our AVC leadership team who mentor our undergrad execs: Mike Repasky, President and previous Director at Headquarters Staff Sean Mittelman, Member Development mentor and previous Director at Headquarters Staff 1 Continued on page 2. I point this out to give you a great comfort level that we have lots of “fire power” and a great knowledge base in our alumni who are leading our AVC. The main thing I came away with was the development skills we are providing as a fraternity at OSU. Programming and development is all focused around leadership skills, personal growth and social development. It reminded me how well we are preparing young men for their future careers. In 2013, our President, Matt Littman, put together a “Success Series” for students on campus. While this also gives us an opportunity to extend our recruitment options, it expanded the Leadership development to other OSU students. This is certainly not a scientific study, but since 2008 we have held a Senior Dinner for the graduates and I make a point of trying to talk to each senior about their future. I do not recall any grads that did not have either a job lined up or accepted into a graduate level program. Our fraternity works really well! Our alumni are coming back and getting involved to continue our traditions. We can all be very proud.

FMG will operate as our Alumni & Parent Office. They manage our records (alumni, parents & undergraduates), host & maintain our website, partner with us in sending out alumni & parent communications, will help promote events, coordinate with us with alumni recognition programs, and will help us in asking alumni & parents for an annual contribution. Greek Ladders is developing a career preparation program for our undergraduates, internships and full-time jobs for students & graduating seniors, and a lifetime career network for our alumni. We have always said that the SigEp Fraternity is a lifetime network, now we mean it, and it’s free for the chapter and members.

THE PROGRAM WILL OFFER THE FOLLOWING:

• Academic, career and leadership resources.

• A 4-year career path that we recommend our members follow.

• Career workshops such as interviewing, networking, and resume, as well as career panels in areas such as business, education, engineering, healthcare, non-profit and science.

• Alumni can signup to be a career speaker and/or as a career mentor where they give advice by phone or in-person 3-4 times per year to an undergraduate. Please signup.

• Lifetime career network for alumni and undergraduate members that includes internships, positions for graduating seniors and an opportunity for alumni to share job openings with their companies.

Sean Anthony

For the last 4 years, Sean Anthony has served our Ohio Gamma chapter as Alumni Recruitment Mentor. Of course that period also coincides with tremendous growth in our chapter recruitment, and Sean is extremely dedicated in helping the chapter. We were quite pleased when Sean contacted us to assist with Ohio Gamma. He graduated from Dartmouth in 2006 and it is rare to see an Ivy League guy want to help in the Big Ten! While at Dartmouth, Sean played varsity lacrosse all four years and served his Sig Ep chapter as two time Chaplain and once as Scholarship chair. Upon graduation he spent 3.5 years on the Sig Ep Headquarters staff. In his first year he was an RD in the Pacific

Colonel James D. Allshouse

As our fifth recipient of the George E Smith Distinguished Alumni Award, it is a pleasure to present a brother with a distinguished military career. Colonel James D. Allshouse, a 1976 OSU grad, flew in several roles including air-to-ground, air superiority, nuclear defense, and defense suppression. The majority of his time was in the distinguished F-4G Wild Weasel with extensive experience in electronic warfare and defense suppression. In this unit, during the first Iraq invasion, aircraft was equipped with radar seeking equipment designed to take out the enemy’s air defense system. In essence, the Wild Weasel’s task was to bait the enemy anti aircraft defenses into targeting them with their radar, allowing the Weasel to know where the enemy’s radar was, thus allowing the Weasel or their teammates to target the radar for destruction. In effect, the Weasels set themselves up as targets and had

Northwest, 2 years as Director of Chapter Services and 6 months as Senior Director of Chapter Services. As alumni we are very pleased whenever we can find an alumni brother who has served on Sig Ep staff as they have a great knowledge and insight to the Balanced Man process which is the basis for our chapter operations. In 2010 Sean joined Abercrombie and Finch and moved as he describes it “to the center of the universe”…Columbus OH, where he is currently a senior recruiter with A&F’s international expansion. Sean is engaged to Kaitlin Schupp and just purchased a home in Westerville, Ohio. While we gladly present this Service award, we should point out that Sean is not

to elude the enemy weapons systems in order to seek out the weapon’s system. In 1999, Colonel Allshouse became Commander of Air Force ROTC and Professor of Air Science at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia. As commander, he and a cadre of six officers and NCOs were responsible for mentoring and educating more than 150 AFROTC cadets that make up the 890th Cadet Wing. His staff assignments included two tours in foreign military sales where he was responsible for all $21 billion in sales and support to the Mideast and Africa. In his present position at Battelle Memorial Institute, he serves as Program Manager within the Battelle Special Programs Market Sector, responsible for providing international tech-nology assessments to U.S. Government clients. In addition to his degree from OSU in Russian history, Colonel Allshouse has a

Master of Arts in Management and Human Relations and a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy. He is married to Milisa K Rizer, a medical doctor with Battelle Memorial, and has a daughter Kaylin, currently a junior in high school. Please welcome our 2013 George E Smith Distinguished Alumni …..Colonel James D. Allshouse.

Sig Ep Golf OutingGlenross Golf Club - July 26, 2014Brothers and Friends We wanted to thank you for participating in the 2014 Sig Ep Golf Outing at the Glenross Golf Club. We had a great time despite the rain on the last 3 or 4 holes for some of us. First we want to congratulate the winners:

First Place with a 9 under par score: Barnett Team consisting of Bob Barnett, Jim Crossley, Ron Lantz and John Waggoner. Yes it is true they are all over 65 and did play from the forward white tees as permitted by the rules.

Second Place with a 6 under par score: Zimmerman Team consisting of Jimmy Zimmerman, his Dad Jim, his Uncle John and his Cousin Pete. They tied with the third place team but because of their lower putt average of 1.2 putts per hole they were awarded second place.

Third Place also with a 6 un-der par score: Phillips Team

consisting of Scott Phillips, Dennis Kaps and Steve Kraynik. Their putt average was 1.5 putts per hole which is the reason for their third position. More importantly is the $100 scholar-ship bet that the Phillips team made with the Barnett team. The loser would contribute to the Sig Ep Scholarship Fund at OSU. Scott did write the check and provided it to John Waggoner for deposit in the OSU Development Fund. Thanks and better luck next year in beating the “old Farts”.

The true winner in the event is the Ohio Gamma Scholarship Funds. Almost everyone purchased one or more “mulligans” to improve their team’s chance of winning. In total, you contributed $510 to the scholarship fund and that combined with the Barnett and Phillips Team giving their winnings to the fund and a small profit from the event raised our total contribution to $755. Including the bet, the total scholarship contribution was $855. Our sincere thanks to everyone and mark your calendars for the 2015 event at Glenross Golf Club for August 1, 2015. Fraternally, Mike Lockwood & John Waggoner

In Memoriam: BALANCED MAN SUCCESS SERIESBy David Corrigan '15

Sigma Phi Epsilon prides itself on buildingbalanced men. The scholar, athlete, and craftsmen all combine to create the balanced man. Throughout the fall semester, the Bal-anced Man Success Series enabled recruits and established brothers alike to partake in events that facilitated this member develop-ment. Influential and respected members of the Ohio State and Columbus communities offered to lead discussions and educate participants on a multitude of topics. Michael Repasky, a former Ohio Gamma member, offered brothers and recruits an

insight into his tools for success and motivation. Dr. J, Vice President of Student Life at the Ohio State University, led an informative and profound discussion on the importance of

diversity within student organi-zations. And, perhaps most memorably for brothers, Ohio State’s own Aaron Craft delivered an inspirational speech to the chapter at the Schottenstein Center on accomplishment and hard work. All of these speakers lent interesting perspectives to students and their words still resonate within Sig Ep. The Balanced Man Success Series helps facilitates growth through speeches, discussions, and ques-tions. With the success of the Success Series in the fall of 2013, brothers have already began working on developing it further in the upcoming semester of 2014. Through their hard work the Success Series is expected to only grow.

DR. DON STENTA - DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS

The Distinguished Alumnus Award is given to brothers that have given outstanding service to the fraternity for a minimum of five years. At the Chicago Carlson Leader-ship Academy, Dr. Don Stenta received this

award. Ohio Gamma would not be the organization that it is today without Dr. Don Stenta. This is the second highest award that Sigma Phi Epsilon gives to alumni.
