The Ogham-Runes.

IN treating this first portion of my subj ect,the

Ogham-Runes,I have made free use of the materials

collected by Dr. Charles Graves , Prof. John Rhys ,and other students

,ending it with my own work in

the Orkney Islands .The Ogham character

,the fair writing of

ancient Irish literature , is called the Babel- loth,

'

Bethluis or Bethlm’

snion,from its initial letters

,like

the Greeco-Phoenician “ Alphab eta,”and the Arabo

H ebrew “Abjad.

” It may briefly be described asformed by straight or curved strokes, of variouslengths

,disposed either perpendicularly or obliquely

to an angle of the substance upon which the letterswere incised

,punched, or rubbed . In monuments

supposed to be more modern,the letters were traced

,

not on the edge,but upon the face of the recipient

surface ; the latter was originally wood , staves andtablets ; then stone, rude or worked ; and, lastly, metal ,silver

,and rarely iron . The place of the bevel was

often taken by a real or an imaginary perpendicular,

or horizontal,bisecting the shortest notches repre

senting vowel-cuts ; or, more generally, by a Fleasgh ,

stem- line,trunk-line

,or Rune-Staff. According to

the Rev. Charles Graves,

The “ Tract on Ogham s and Irish grammaticaltreatises2 contain some eighty different m odifica

tions of the Ogham alphabet , while Wormius enum erates twelve varieties of the Runes proper -mostof them mere freaks of fancy

,like similar prelusions

in the East.3 The following is the first on the list ,and it is certainly that which derives most directlyfrom the old Orient home .

Here evidently the only thing needful was tomake the stem s trokes of the primitive alphabet acontinuous Fleasgh .

Let us now compare the Ogham proper with whatmay be called “ the Ogham-Runes ” ; the latterbeing opposed to Runogham

5 or Secret Ogham insuch phrases as Runogham net Fian—of the Fenian sor ancient Irish militiamen. The Ogham -Runesrepresent the three groups of letters (fitter) generally known as the Futhorc, from the initial six .

find the opinion that this twig-Rune,

” corresponding with the Ogham Craob h (or virgular Ogham ) ,

composed of an upright stem and side branches,sug

gested the stepped,” “ ladder ” or primitive Ogham '

and hence the perfect popular Ogham. This theoryhas by no means been generally accepted. Yet itwell ex emplifies the principle upon which the variousAbecedaria were constructed— namely

,that the

symbol for any letter showed in the first instanceits particular group amongst the three ; and , secondly ,the place which it held in that group . Goransson

(Bantil , p . 232 ) figures an ancient monument onwhich are a few words written in these OghamRunes with the twigs (Rfinneftrecfen) , the remainderbeing in the common Runes .

Among the class-Runes supposed to have beendeveloped from the Futhorc there is a vast varietyof forms . We n eed only quote the variety calledHahal-Runes , whose resemblance is most striking to

the letters .In the original Runic Alphabet two letters are

called after trees,the thorn and the birch ; the

latter I have shown9 is like poplar (P ipp al) , the onlyterm which spread through Europe deriving directlyfrom the old Aryan home (Bhurj a) . To the thornand the birch the more developed Anglo-Saxonalphabet added four : yew

the Irish letters are made to signify trees or plantsbut at least ten of them are not Irish terms .Amongst foreign words

they are mere notches ; in other cases they are ofconsiderable length ; for instance, in the St. GallCodex of Priscian

,whose eight marginal notes in

Ogham are attributed to A .D . 874, 875 .

Thus the total characters originally numberedin Runic 1 6 and in the Ogham 20

their deficiencies . Of the five diphthongs,only the

first (ea) has been found upon the ancient monuments .The nex t added to it was the second (oi) and lastlycame the other three (at, tea and ea) which wereemployed occasionally. The absent consonants are

several of the signs are supposed to denote differentsounds .I have no intention of entering into the vexedquestion of Ogham antiquity

,or of its pre-Christian

versus its pos t-Christian date . Dr. Graves12 determines t he question as follows One of the firstthings to be remarked in this alphabet is theseparation of the letters into consonants andvowels . This arrangement alone ought to havesatisfied any scholar that it is the work of a grammarian

,and not a genuine primitive alphabet.

Again,the vowels are arranged according to the

method of the Irish grammarians,who have divided

them into two classes , broad and slender. Thebroad a, 0 (identical in the oldest writings) , and u

are put first ; the slender e and i last ” Thusas regards the origin of the Ogham alphabet

,the

author came to the conclusion that it was introducedinto Ireland from Scandinavia or North Germany ;and that it was framed by persons acquainted w iththe later and developed Runic alphab ets , such asthose used by the Anglo -Saxon s . Dr. O

Connor

also doubted the antiquity of the Ogham alphabet.He held that the Irish possessed a primitiveabecedarium of 1 6 letters ( like the Runic) , allnamed after trees ; and , consequently, that thetree - shaped letters (formee rectilineares) may be amodern invention .

Donovan (1 845 ) makes the Babel- lath alphabetcontain 24

,and the Beth- luts-mon 26 letters . The

reduces the genuineIrish alphabet to 1 8 .

But these are obj ections to the a lp habet ,13not to the

characters comp osing it. With respect to the artificialdistribution of the vowels

,Dr . Graves own s in the

next sentence that it was not by any means strictlyobserved by the earliest writ ers of this country ;adding that frequent violations of it are to be found inthe “Book ofArmagh ” and in the monuments of oldentime . His argument

,founded upon the present

systematisation, is absolutely worthless . Oghan .

cannot be an original and primitive alphabet in itsactual and finished state it may have been so in itsrude form . A case in point is the modern Devanagari

,

” still used for Prakrit as well as for Sanskrit .That beautiful and philological system is the workof grammarians who knew as much as

,and perhaps

more than,Priscian and Donatus . Nothing can be

at any rate nothing is,more artful

,more scientific

,

than its distribution of the sound-symbols . Yet theoriginal and simple abecedarium was old enough

having been simply borrowed from the Phoenicians .We know that the Hindus wrote letters in the daysof Alexander

,and the Girnar inscriptions prove that

the ancient form of the complicated modern alphabetwas used in India during the third centuryThe same may have been the case with the primitiveOgham of 1 6 or 20 letters . All we can now sayis

,that either the inscriptions have perished or

they are yet to be found ; and no wonder whenthey were cut on wooden staves

Bishop Graves himself quotes many remnants oftradition touching the use of Ogham among theheathen Irish—not to speak of the Catholic legendof Fen ius Fearsaidh , great grand-son of Japhet .

A story in the Leab har na h Uidhri,”mentions

the Ogham,inscribed on the end of the Diet or

headstone planted over the grave of King FothadhAirgthech (the Robber) , who rul ed Ireland in A .D . 285 .

The Book of Ballymote” refers to the Ogham of

Fiachrach (ob . A .D . A similar allusion is foundin the “Elopement ofDeirdré,

The Bishop of Limerick’s elaborate and extensive

arguments concerning the modern origin and thesecret nature of Ogham appear to have been gen erally adopted. Mr. Gilbert Gordie20 expresses thepopular opinion “ Oghams are

,as we know

,an

occult form of monumental writing practised bythe Celtic ecclesiastics of the early middle ages .The Maes How e inscription appears to be a cryptogram, and t he same is the case with its , equivalent,the Arabic Mushajjar, or Tree-Alphabet .

Professor Rhys21 is the obj ector in chief to theBishop of Limerick’s theories and opinions . He holdsthat the stepped or ladder Ogham is purelyartificial

,and found chiefly in the “Essay on Ogham .

He believes that the cryptic runes, from which thefair writing has been derived

,are not proved old

enough in any shape to originate the Ogham . Hedoes not see any cause for accepting the assertionthat the Ogham alphabet was intended for crypticpurposes ;

I cannot but hold this interpretation of a Scandinavian text by an Arabic character as proof positivethat the Semitic “Mushajjar and the Palm-runesof the Ogham and Runic alphabet are absolutelyidentical.To conclude the subject of Ogham ,

of Semitic stock,a race which borrows and improves

had a far handier alphabet of 22 letters chosen fromthe Egyptian phonology

in 25 characters besides some 400 hieroglyphics :consequently they would hardly want a second .

Perhaps our Ogham may be of a still nobler stock ,

and I here venture to suggest that it may haveoriginated with the far- famed Nabat or Nabathaean s.

Finally,we may expect

,when the subject shall

have acquired importance, to find traces of thisalphabet in places hitherto unsuspected . It may beworth while to investigate the subj ect of the Runes34

found upon stones in the Vernacular lands . Somescholars have interpreted them by the vernacular

observations . Its b irth is at present veiled in

He replied (November 26th , 1 877) that it would bedifficult to copy the swathes as the marks weredoubtful

,and that a competent photographer, .Herr.

Standl,had failed to reproduce them in sun-picture .

The colour of the cloth had been darkened by timeto a dull yellow

,and the letters refused to make

an impression perhaps,however

,a better instru

ment might have succeeded. The idea of washingthe fascie (swathings) white was rej ected for fear ofobliterating the marks .Two years before the date of my application theOriental Society of Leipzig had addressed theDirectors of the Museum, requesting a loan ofthe bende (bandages) , but the Government hadrefused ; promising, however, to aid the studiesof savan ts charged with the transcription. Andhere the matter had dropped. At the instance ofDr. Leo Reinisch ,

the well-known Professor ofEgyptology to the University, Vienna, Abbé Ljub iéproposed to reproduce in print these pannilini (littlecloths) and other interesting remain s under hischarge ; but the necessary in the shape of asubsidy of public money was not forthcoming.

by uniting the two strokes formed by the ink havingbeen erased on the single threads . The work wascontinued as long as I could find a piece clear enoughto be copied

The copies have been numbered from 1 to 5 .

In No . 3 you will remark that two lines are wantingat the bottom . The original does not show anystains or marks that could

have been characters,

while the three top lines are distinct . I take it,

therefore,to have been the end of a chapter

perhaps of the whole volume . No . 4 shows on the

5° Dr. Brugsch-Bey, who upon these subjects is perhaps the highestliving authority
