THE OFFICIAL STUDENT PUBLICATION OF LA SALLE GREEN HILLS – ADULT NIGHT HIGH SCHOOL FIRST TRIMESTER S.Y. 2017-2018 VOL. XVI NO. 1
“I pray that every Adult Night High School student will have a
meaningful life,” was the message of Br. Victor A. Franco FSC, the President of
LSGH during the Magandang Gabi, Brothers program spearheaded by the Stu-
dent Council held last July 13, 2017 at the Br. Rafael S. Donato FSC Center for the
Performing Arts.
Br. Vic was joined by De La Salle Brothers in the Philippines namely Br.
Alexander Ervin T. Diaz FSC, Br. Mark Salvan FSC, Br. Dan Sanding FSC, Br. John
Ong FSC, Br. Emong Viroomal FSC, Br. Butch Alcudia FSC, Br. Abet Pia FSC, Br.
Rainer Guillergan FSC, and Br. Angelo Paragas FSC.
The Brothers answered with enthusiasm the questions of the students in
the segment called “Fast Talk.” In the question, “Mahirap po bang pumasok
bilang Brother?” Br. Mark said, “Madaling pumasok bilang Brother pero mahirap itong
panindigan.” Another question was “Anu-ano po ba ang mga criteria para maging isang
La Salle Brother?” Br. Gelo answered, “Willing maging single habang-buhay, will-
ing maging teacher at generous.” A question about the trials that they encoun-
tered before they became a Brother and how they were able to overcome those
trials was answered by Br. Raniel by saying “Limitasyon at temptation. Mahalin
When asked what is
their dream and advice to ANHS students, Br. Dan said, “ Mag-aral kayong mabuti
at tuparin ang pangarap ninyo. Sana huwag natin sayangin ang mga pagkakataon. Ma-
halin ninyo ang inyong pag-aaral at huwag ninyong sukuan. Huwag kayong susuko.
Laban kung laban.”
The students had a glimpse of the life of the De La Salle Brothers
through this activity and enlightened them on what it means to be a Brother. The
Brothers inspired them to never give up on their dreams no matter what.
ANHS accepts Grade 11 studes for S.Y. 2017-2018 By Vergel Jay D.G. Berona, SHS-ABM
For school year 2017 – 2018,
the La Salle Green Hills—Adult
Night High School has opened its
doors to Grade 11 students taking
Accountancy, Business and Manage-
ment (ABM) and Technical-Vocational
-Livelihood or (TVL) Tracks.
S.Y. 2016-2017 was the start
of the nationwide implementation of
the Senior High School (SHS) pro-
gram. Students must go through
Grades 11 and 12 to graduate from
high school. Grade 11 is the first year
in the two-year SHS program.
According to Mrs. Agnes C.
Alonsozana, the ANHS Principal,
“We started offering Grade 11 as an
initial step to forming a separate Sen-
ior High School entity in the ANHS
primarily to cater to the immediate
demand of the ALS Graduates. As of
the time of this writing, we have an
Alternative Learning System structure
within LSGH, but it culminates with
the equivalent of Grade 10 completers.
Mrs. Alonsozana added, “We
would want to provide opportunities
for them to move on immediately to
SHS, without further wait. We also
wanted to offer an alternative to the
graduates of nearby public schools,
and to open our doors to graduates of
Grade 10 who are Deaf.”
ANHS already has its five-
year Integrated JHS/SHS Program
where Grade 9 and Grade 10 students
take SHS courses every Saturday and
summer. They will be called SHS
students on their last year here in
ANHS. Those under the integrated
program can graduate high school in
just five years.
For the new Grade 11 stu-
dents, they need only two years to
complete SHS after finishing JHS out-
side ANHS. These two additional
years according to the Department of
Education will equip learners to better
prepare them for the future whether it
be employment, entrepreneurship,
skills development, or higher educa-
tion (college). National Competency
Peligrin of SHS-TVL wins in 6th
Search for ANHS Ambassadors
By Jovanie C. Bonaobra, TVET—Cookery (Wednesday)
Majorie C. Peligrin of SHS-
TVL was the Champion in the 6th
Annual Search for ANHS Ambassa-
dors held last September 15, 2017 at
the Br. Rafael S. Donato FSC Center
for the Performing Arts. Lasallian
Pride composed of students from
Grade 11 was the first runner-up
while Mark Lester V. Rait of TVET-
Food and Beverage Services NC II
Monday was the second runner-up.
Peligrin said in disbelief,
dapat,” were her words of encouragement
to those who also want to join the said
search in the future.
According to Mr. Roy S. Daz,
the Administrative Affairs Coordina-
tor, “The Search for the ANHS Am-
bassadors is an annual activity in
ANHS that aims to hone talents and
build characters, both in the High
School Program and in Technical-
Vocational Education and Training
(TVET). We are just happy we are
now in our sixth staging.”
Mr. Rheal D. Dayrit, Miss Maria
M. Johanna Batolos, Mr. Alvin T. Cas-
tro, and Mrs. Ethel A. Quiboquibo
once again served as judges.
Mr. Albert M. Mutuc together
with his students from Hairdressing
NCII made possible the hair and
make-up of the hosts and contestants.
Jovanie C. Bonaobra, the 2016
ANHS Ambassador was given a mo-
ment to perform his original songs
Manatili (a Love Song), and Isip (a
song to Renew Mind).
The night was hosted by Vincent
Jansen Cabato, Jason James Benosa,
and Christian Galang of SHS-ABM.
The Parents-Employers Associa-
tion (PEA) headed by Mrs.
Quiboquibo sponsored the said event.
Assessments are also taken by stu-
dents taking SHS courses.
According to Ella Orilla, a
Grade 11 ABM student, “My experi-
ences in ANHS are a little bit exciting
because of the activities in ANHS. I
enjoy my semester in this school be-
cause I learned a lot and I focused on
what my teacher discussed on us.”
For Glenn Leones of Grade
11 TVL, “Being in ANHS is one of the
best blessings I can have. The warm
welcome is felt and coping is not a
problem. Although many students are
quirky and peculiar in their own
ways, it is still a fun environment. “

ed in institutional activities like Engkwentrong Lasalyano and Green Link.
Mrs. Agnes C. Alonsozana, ANHS Principal said, “We remember St.
John Baptist De La Salle and what he started – and the dreams that came along
with his initial work. We are all by-products of his ideals, and we continue to
remain true to what he envisioned to be his mission.”

Bago ang araw ng reach-out

at TVET ay bumisita sa Tahanang
Walang Hagdanan sa Cainta, Rizal.
Ito ay isang komunidad para sa mga
kapwa nating may kapansanan na
nagsusumikap upang ipagpatuloy
ang buhay.
Pagdating namin doon ay
sinimulan na ang programa. Ipinakita
nila sa amin ang kanilang mga gawain
gaya ng paggawa ng wheel chair, pag-
repack ng mga gamot at paggawa ng
upuan. Ang nagpaantig sa aking puso
ay noong kami ay nakipagkwentuhan
sa kanila. Sa kabila ng lahat, kahit
mahirap, ay kinakaya nila upang
mabuhay. Sila rin ay nabigyan ng
oportunidad na magtrabaho kahit na
sila ay may kapansanan. Hindi man
sila nakalalakad o sila man ay may
kapansanan, patuloy pa rin silang
nabubuhay nang marangal. Kahit
gaano man kahirap ang buhay, ma-
saya naman sila sa kanilang ginagawa
lalo na sa kanilang trabaho.
Upang mapawi ang kanilang
kalungkutan ay naghandog kaming
mga mag-aaral ng mga palaro gaya ng
Pinoy Henyo, Bring Me, at iba pa.
Nakita namin sa kanilang mga mukha
ang saya na parang nakapapawi ng
pagod at nakagagaan ng pa-
kiramdam. Masaya kami na nagka-
roon kami ng pagkakataon na ma-
kasalamuha sila at malaman ang ka-
nilang pamumuhay at pinagdadaanan
sa buhay.

A lot of us want to finish our studies and have a successful life
in the future. One way we can achieve this is by entering college as a
step closer to the fulfilment of our dreams.
From the news of August 3, 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte
signed the RA 10931, or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Edu-
cation Act. The law gives full tuition subsidy for students in State Uni-
versities and Colleges (SUCs), local universities and colleges, and state-
run technical-vocational schools. President Duterte explained that he
signed the law to provide education to poor Filipinos. In fact, in Philip-
pine history, he is the only president who has made this law.
Through this declaration, we are given hope because it can aid
us ANHS students and our fellow Filipinos as we venture into college
education in the future. One of the reasons why many Filipinos do not
continue anymore after high school is poverty. Now that high school
graduates have a chance of acquiring a college degree, we hope that
many Filipinos will grab this opportunity to improve their lives
through education. It can also aid the parents to ease their financial
burden without sacrificing the education of their children. The law is a
great help to every Filipino family. Many students who are in need can
benefit from this law. It can be a tool for poverty alleviation, equity,
and growth in our country, but free education is not inevitable.
Malacañang assured the public that there will be enough funds
to support the Free Tertiary Education Bill despite the many problems
our country faces that need budget allocation like rehabilitation after
the war in Marawi, infrastructure projects, and so on.
Education is important because our future depends on it. It is
something that no one can ever lose or steal from us. By this, we are
shaped by our firm foundation so that we will not fall when we face
trials and problems in our life. In order to achieve our dreams, we just
need to be industrious, patient, and love our education.
Now that the government has done its part to help its citizens
acquire free tertiary education, we should also do our role to be
responsible students because our future depends on us.
mapagtatagumpayan.

Nakakatakot at nakakatindig
Gutom at
nadadamay, napagbibintangan at napagkakamalang drug pusher o drug addict.
Takot
War on Drugs:
Solution or Problem?
In today’s society, our beloved country has suffered from many prob-
lems. One of the serious problems we face today is related to drugs. It has been a
year when President Rodrigo Duterte released the list of narco-politicians that
are involved in drugs. Some of our policemen, governors, congressmen, senators,
and judges are part of the list. Our supposed to be protectors are the ones pro-
tecting those who are in the so called drug business.
Maybe one of the reasons why our former president did not come up
with a solution about drugs was due to the large scope the problem has reached.
To solve this problem, our president declared war on drugs. There were moves
done like Oplan Tokhang to remind the drug users to stop and change their lives.
Some were placed in rehabilitation centers. However, in just one year, many
people were killed because they were part of the drugs watch list. Sad to say,
many innocent people were also killed by our policemen. Even some of the mil-
lennials became victims too. Take for example the case of Kian. It created an at-
mosphere of fear among the people especially the poor who were the victims.
Do they have to kill just to have something to report to their supervi-
sors? Is this part of the solution that our president is trying to impose? Does it
create more problems than solutions? Drugs should be eradicated in our society,
but our government should be cautious with its way of doing fighting this prob-
lem. I wish no more innocent people will be killed because life is precious. Once
gone, it cannot be taken back.
kaming may matututunan.
At habang tumatagal
Walang kailangang mas angat at wala ding naiiiwan. Kailangang sabay-sabay
Walang hilahan pababa,
puro tulakan pataas. Walang iwanan, laging nagdadamayan at nagtutulungan.

FIRST TRIMESTER 2017-2018 6
PANITIKAN
Nalungkot ang Pilosopo Ni Jovanie C. Bonaobra, TVET– Cookery (Wednesday)
Pati partido, alya-alyansa, grupo-grupo, pami-pamilya.
Katarungan Ni Nicole P. Astorga, 10-A
Labis akong naghihinagpis at nagdaramdam.
Dahil ba may pera sila’t kapangyarihan?
Labimpitong taon akong iningatan,
Ngayo’y isang linggo akong paglalamayan.
Katarungan, o katarungan! Sa lupa na aking pinagbagsakan,
Naroon ang bakas ng katotohanan. Bakas na nagsisilbing patunay na wala,
Wala akong ginawang kasalanan.

LITERARY FIRST TRIMESTER 2017-2018 7
React.Comment.Post.Share By John Christopher Glenn L. Leones, Grade 11—TVL
Isn’t it sad to think that our generation usually burns time in social media nowadays? We are feeding ourselves these programs like some medicine is inside it. Somehow, it is like a drug crawling into our system, making us more addictive to it as we surf deeper into its world. It results in making our own dictionary, newspaper, assurance, friend, family, and etc. in a metaphorical way. It limits our ability to socialize in the real world and the ability to think thoroughly before formulating a statement when we react, comment, post, and share about someone’s life experience.
Some of us tend to react often about what is happening in social media and the lives of others, may that person be famous or not. Instead of focusing into a more productive way of living, of not reacting to what is happening in social media and start interacting and contributing in real life, we tend to meddle in other people’s lives. This is one of the problems of our generation: The React, Comment, Post, Share Syndrome. This is what we millennials are known for. We React. Despite knowing only little information about the issue, we tend to react first rather than investigate further about it. Even if our reaction is irrelevant on the issue, we sometimes don’t care about it as long as we express ourselves because ‘this’ is our definition of freedom. We comment. Of course, all of us do. But in our situation it is somehow different from normal comments. We comment in a way that we rant about a certain topic. Sometimes it is about our favorite celebrities breaking up, issues in a specific country, conflicts in our economy, inequities, rumors of wars, etc. Obviously, one can say that it is only normal that people will comment on these certain issues. But in our case, we comment without even knowing or caring if the news or rumor is legitimate. We just don’t care. We just comment just to say that we care or boast that we know something about that person, thing, or stuff.
Going down to Post. This is one of the severe syndromes of a millennial teenager. This is where a per-son will either rant, share about his/her life, travel, and stuff that are so called “share-able or post-able” whatever they call that cancer thing. In this syndrome, we millennials usually become so careless that the quote “Post first before sor-ry” applies. We post either about someone we hate or love, our life crisis, our daily life routine, and so on and so forth; as if that is everybody’s business. First it is indeed, not a problem when you post about family vacation, family outing or bonding because these things somehow do help in terms of setting example to other people. But, posting about your daily routine? It is like you are begging for someone to barge into your house and steal all that information you are leaking into your social media accounts. Also, when did the social media become a diary? Now, it is understandable that we use social media sometimes to express our feelings, but not to the extent that we also post our life’s story. We are posting and “sub-tweeting” rants that do not even have solid basis. We are hurting each other without putting our-selves into their shoes. This is because we tend to seek for assurance and praise from the wrong place: the social me-dia. We share. We share information that does not even have solid basis. We only just show how gullible a person can be by doing this. Thoughtless sharing can be very crucial for it can be used against us, maybe not today or tomor-row, but someday.
To wrap things up, our generation is somehow maturing in a wrong way. I am not saying that all of us do, but most of us. We are so soaked up with social media that we forget how to practice human etiquette and proper lifestyle. Showing empathy for others and weighing words before speaking are now often forgotten. Because humans tend to seek for the easy way and not the right way, we neglect to further investigate when it comes to news that comes around us. Because why not? Everything nowadays is just instant. We just need to search our social media account, type our username, type our password, and log in.
“Where There’s Grit, There’s Excellence” Lasallian Mission Week Culmination
By Fr. Bong Bayaras
Grit is defined as courage and resolved or strength of character. And looking into our readings as we hear two opposite people, one who has strength of character and another who needed to develop his strength of character, Jesus and Moses respectively. If we go back to the story of Moses, we know that he was an apprehensive leader. He was doubtful of himself. He bargained with the Lord not to send him to Pharaoh. He pointed every weakness he had in order to convince the Lord not to send him. He tried to find different rea-sons to discredit his credibility. But Jesus on the other hand, displayed his strength of character by going against the religious leaders of his time. He shook their complacent mindsets. He challenged unreasonable doctrines. He confronted the status quo. But what was the main difference between Jesus and Moses? Wisdom. Jesus knew his enemy; Moses knew his weaknesses. Jesus knew when to attack. Moses still needed to be pushed. Jesus knew what kind of attack he would do. Moses doubted the power of the one who was sending him. Jesus knew his strategy. Moses did not understand the strategy that God was laying before him. And hopefully this is also one important virtue that we must bring when we carry out our mission. Indeed, we need courage and strength of character to carry out our mission. But let us not forget that we will also need the wisdom on how to face the different challenges of our mis-sion. There is a song that carried a line that says: So many times, it happens so fast, you trade your passion for glory. And how many times have we fallen into this temptation, to let go of our passion and rather look at the glory it offers, to run after the limelight, to claim the fruits of our labor. But excellence is not just about the glory it could offer, because sometimes or even most of the time our mission could offer no glory. The mission of the cross is not a glorious mission, but it was a mission guided by passion. When Jesus came into the world, it was not in a glorious and majestic state but rather in a lowly and simple stable. When Jesus was dying on the cross, it did not project a glorious scene. And when he rose from the dead, it was not precluded with the glorious sound of a trumpet but rather with a disturbing sound of an earthquake. Ex-cellence is not equated with glory because we can always strive for excellence without the reward of glory. In our gospel, Jesus showed his disappointment with the Pharisees because they failed to understand the meaning of words: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” But what is the difference between the two? In simple terms, sacrifice is something we do; mercy is something that we give, it is something that we offer. The Pharisees focused too much on what they do, but they failed to see the things that they could give, the things that they could offer. And mission is something that we both do and give. Mission is not just a job order. It is not just a command. It is also something that we give. Because part of our mission is to offer our gifts, to offer our talents, and to offer our very lives. Where there is grit, there is excellence. Where there is courage and strength of character, we can defy the extraordinary, we can take up the challenge. But grit is always accompanied with wisdom, to know our mission, to know our strategy so that we can also understand the chal-lenges that lied ahead. Where there is excellence, it is not necessary that glory comes along with it. But let our passion power our motivation for excellence. Mission is not only something that we do, it is something that we give because Jesus did not only come to the world to fulfill his mis-sion, but he gave his very life as part of his mission.

SUPPORT STAFF
Miss Lady Dehvie L. Sunga or Miss Chabz/Debbie is an alumnus of ANHS. She is two more years away from her course BS in Computer Engineering which she has started in
Lyceum of the Philippines University – Manila. Before working in ANHS, she was part of PEARL office of LSGH. She now works as library assistant. She wants to give back to
her alma mater and to encourage other people to pursue their dreams. During her free time she loves reading books, hanging out with her friends, watching movies, traveling,
and eating. Her best memory was the first time she served as an emcee during the TVET Fair which helped boost her confidence. She wants to be remembered as a happy
person. Her guiding principle is a Bible verse from Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to
give you hope and a future.”
