Director’s Memo
Hi Everybody! WOW! What a lot change happening around us and within the chapter. As I shared with
the group at the last meeting, Joe Dugan was forced into taking some time away from the chapter, and he
had asked me to step in and serve as “Acting Director” in his absence. Well, things got a little worse from
there, and Joe has since resigned his role as Director permanently, so I will continue to serve this chapter as
best as I can until a permanent Director is named.
I would also like to formally announce that Bob Hastings has agreed to serve the Chapter as our new Safety
Officer, assuming that role from Ron Matthews. For those that have had a chance to ride with Bob, I’m
sure you’ll agree that he’s going to be a great fit as Safety Officer as he ‘walks the walk’ every time he hits
the saddle. If you haven’t had a chance to meet him yet, please make a point to shake hands and introduce
yourself at the next chapter event!

Editor’s Notes Hello Chapter Members and Friends, Bowling Thunder II was even more fun than the first one!! We had 11 professionals(?) competing on three teams. The team of Logan Roberts, Jack Bond, and Deb Packard lucked out and took first place. We added two more members to the Road Warrior gang. They are Valerie Peters and Steve Beck. Congrats!! Mike McKibben says that there a few others moving up in the points standing. Hope to see a bunch more get their patch soon. The Monsoon season is upon us. So please check your bike, have the proper gear, and watch out for those folks in cages. You should be familiar with your ride route and road conditions before taking off incase you need to pull off and let the storm pass. Troy
Continued form page 2 Editor: If you see your National HOG number while reading the news-letter you can pick any prize on the raffle table prior to the raffle draw and after verification of your HOG number. Troy [email protected] is looking for fresh ideas to be put in the HOGwash. Member sub-mitted articles and pictures would be appreciated. Troy was recog-nized at the meeting for his excellent publishing skills. We are lucky to have such a talented member. Photo Board: Logan has started a photo pin-up board at the dealer-ship. He would like a photo of you and your scooter with a brief story attached.
LOH Officer: There will be a LOH activities meeting on Aug 01. Contact Andrea at [email protected] for more information. Historian: Possible (reunion) party for past and present chapter mem-bers.
Membership Officer: Chapter is 80 members strong. If you don’t have a membership card catch up with Morgan at one of our events. Lets make it to 100 members before years end by spreading the word of Yavapai HOG #1271.
Road Warrior Program: The Road Warrior (R.W.) program is gaining momentum. You can receive your patch by accumulating 1500 points made possible through active participation with the chapter. Mike McKibben is the administrator of the R.W. program and has been emailing updates so members are able to keep track of their progress.

Assistant Director’s Notes
Hello HOG Chapter Brothers and Sisters! For the few members that were unable to make it to the joint
chapter picnic on July 9, you really missed a great time! And I say “few” that were unable, because we had
43 members in attendance from Yavapai, coupled with another 20+ from Anthem! What a great crowd!
One of the highlights of the picnic was a visit from Jim “Pitt” Pittenger, who is on the State Rally committee,
and he gave a really nice preview of what we can expect at the rally this year. As a result of his preview,
several of us are planning to go down a day early, now leaving on Wednesday, October 12, instead of leav-
ing on Thursday, October 13. This extra day will allow us to use Thursday to ride some of ‘planned rides’
that are slated for Friday, so that we can use Friday for a planned poker adventure ride that should be a lot
of fun for all.
If you haven’t booked your hotel or RV space yet, you probably want to get that done as quickly as possi-
ble. If you can’t find any rooms available on line, try calling Gateway Studio Suites directly. Pitt told us that
they goofed on their web site, and even though they show no rooms available, they have some, you just
have to call them.
Remember too, that the official web site for the rally can be found at: http://www.azstatehogrally.com/ and you can also find information at the Arizona State HOG Rally Facebook page. I’m still looking forward to a massive Yavapai Chapter turn out at the Rally!
Saddle up! Let’s ride and have some fun!

I know there’s a lot of change taking place, but I want to assure all of you that the ‘mission’ of the chapter
hasn’t changed. We’re Chapter members so that we can ride our motorcycles and have fun! I know I can
speak on behalf of all the officers, the new ones as well as the veterans, and tell you that we’ll all do our
very best to keep that first and foremost in our minds as we take the chapter forward. We’ve got a full cal-
endar with all sorts of different rides to choose from, and there are more coming, I promise you! Let’s all
get out there and RIDE!

Morgan and Sam Clark’s Hatch, Utah Romping Adventure
Sam Clark likes to ride his Heritage Classic on his return trips to the USA from the Philippines. He did an Iron Butt ride to Fort Worth, TX with me last year and a run up the Devil's Highway. This year we planed an over night to Hatch, UT. The ten day weather forecast showed a little dip in temperature for June 23rd & 24th. It would still be hot so we left at first light 4:50 AM. Sam was even chilled riding from Ash Fork to Flag. We had breakfast and Sam warmed up at Mac Donald's in Flag. We gassed up and headed north on US89.
We stopped at The Gap to remove our jackets and topped off the tanks. While stopped there 3 south bound Harley riders and 2 north bound BMW riders also stopped. A Harley rider on a new Road Glide could not get his gas cap to screw back in. He stated he had always had difficul-ty with the cap. My cap wouldn't screw in either. I determined that the fill neck was slightly de-formed. I suggested that oil be put on the threads and with that he was able to screw the cap back in place.
I wear a Spot Geo Tracker on my forearm. I had removed it when I took off my jacket. I placed the tracker on the passenger seat while I stored the jacket. Then I was distracted with helping a fellow rider. See where this is going. Yes, we hit the road with the tracker on the seat. About ten mile down the road I realized the tracker was not on my forearm. We pulled over and I was surprised to see the tracker wedged between the right saddlebag and rear fender. The Lord continues to watch over me.
A left turn at US89A took us past the Vermilion Cliff and up to nearly 8,000 feet as we ap-proached Jacob Lake. It had been warm after leaving The Gap so if was very good to be at alti-tude. At Kanab we had lunch at Escobar's Mexican Restaurant, good food at a reasonable price.
Fed and gassed we headed north on US89 to Hatch. Beautiful country along the Sever river. In Hatch there is the Galaxy of Hatch a biker bed & breakfast. It has a motorcycle accessory sec-tion, a cafe section, and an eight room motel. Each room is decorated in a Harley motif with two queen beds. A room with two breakfasts and tax included is an even $100 (Ph 435-735-4018). See photos. Regrettably I didn't know all this when the trip was planned and our motel was another mile north at the intersection of US89 and SRT12.
We also learned that there was a motorcycle rally and baloon fest that weekend in Panguitch. After dropping off our gear at our motel we headed into Panguitch. Being Friday it was a setup day for the events. They were setting up two band stands for Friday night and some of the ven-dors had set up. Timpanogos Harley Davidson was there sponsoring test rides. We walked around some , had ice cream, and rode back past our motel and on to Brice Canyon. After taking some photos there we crashed back at our motel.
The next morning after breakfast we headed home via US89. We stopped twice for gas and once at Williams for lunch. The weather co-operated and it didn't get hot until Ashfork, hotter at Pauldin, and hotter yet at Chino Valley but by then we were almost home logging 788 miles in the process.
