SEPTEMBER 15/16
September 11: Patriot Day
911. For years, those numbers simply meant a call for help. Now they also remind us of September 11, 2001, the date of the worst terrorist a ack on the United States of America and one of the deadliest days ever on American soil.
Prayer of Remembrance God of comfort we li to you our prayer on
this 17th anniversary of September 11. We
ask you to surround us with comfort,
protec on and your Divine Providence.
September 11 was a day when we as a
na on lost so many. May we take this me
to honor the women and men, and the boys
and girls who lost their lives. When we
struggle with the ques ons behind these
events, help us to know that we are never
alone. Guide us with the courage to know
that when we stretch out our hands to you,
we feel your embrace in the arms of our
neighbor. May we always remember that
we are one family in this world. Help us to
know that our pain is yours; and the tears of
our family fall on your heart. Guide us as a
na on, and help your people to never forget
how so many laid down their lives for their
friends. Bring us your grace to hear the
small voice of the one crying in the wilder-
ness. Bring those who are suffering your
comfort in our embrace. We ask this
through Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God
forever and ever. Amen.

SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES
The phrase "Sunday best" has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it's a healthy sign that we're as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man's origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark's Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven.
Dear STM Parishioners, “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more”. Luke 12:48 I have lived a very blessed life, one in which I am eternally grateful for. After many years of asking the Lord, “how can I best serve You, how can I repay you for the may blessings you’ve given me,” I have decided to enter Diaconate Formation for the Diocese of Baton Rouge. This has been a family decision that we took very seriously and one that took many years of consid-eration and prayer. My wife, Judy, and I started attending discernment classes in January, along with other potential diaconate candi-dates. In April we began the application process, and in May we had formal interviews. In June, we were notified by Bishop Muench that I had been ac-cepted as a diaconate candidate. I started classes on August 20 at Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University, formerly Our Lady of the Lake College. The role of deacon is a role of service to his pastor as well as his bishop. And today, more than ever, our priests need our help. It is my prayer that I will be able to one day serve the Diocese of Baton Rouge. The formation process will take five years. If God willing, I will be ordained in 2023. I ask that all of you keep me and my family in your prayers as we begin this journey. Please keep our bishops, priests and seminarians in your prayers. And know that all of you are always in my prayers. God bless, Terry Bellon

PARISHIONER FORUM
with Dr. Greg Brandao Help develop a strategic plan for our
parish community by discussing:
1) What are the "mission-critical" elements of the culture of St. Thomas More that must be preserved? In other words, what’s really good about STM that you particularly value?
(2) In what areas are there opportuni-ties for STM to improve?
(3) How can we partner to maintain the “mission-critical” elements of the culture of St. Thomas More and to enhance the quality of service that we provide to our parishioners?
Parishioner Forums Offered Wednesday, September 12
from 7:45 – 8:45 a.m.
Friday, September 14 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Tuesday, September 18 from 4:45 – 5:45 p.m.

This fall, churches throughout our city and region will unite for the fall
campaign of 40 Days for Life - an international, 40 day focused effort to pray and fast for an end to abortion starting on September 26 and ending on November 4. In addition to forty days of prayer and fasting, we will participate in peaceful prayer from 7
a.m. and 7 p.m. outside of Delta abortion facility, locat-ed at 756 Colonial Drive in Baton Rouge. St. Thomas
More has adopted Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 1— 7 p.m. during the 40 Days for Life prayer event.

Prison Ministry Prison Ministry is run by several volunteers, together with other
parishes within the Diocese of Baton Rouge. These volunteers
work together for the betterment of those incarcerated within
the prison systems of East Baton Rouge Parish and beyond.
They strive to provide for the physical, spiritual, social and edu-
cational needs of the inmates as well as their families. Volun-
teers are fully trained through the Diocese of Baton Rouge to
further empower them to serve more effectively. Visiting the im-
prisoned brings hope of new life to those whose mistakes have
cost them their freedom. It is also one of the seven Corporal
Works of Mercy we as Catholic Christians can participate in.
Respect Life Ministry Through prayer, outreach, education and political action, Respect Life Ministry volun-
teers strive to uphold the teachings of the Catholic Church with regards to the protection
and sanctification of life and families. They raise the consciousness of the parish through
the awareness months of October and January, and also maintain a formation program
throughout the year. They also participate in diocesan, local and nationally sponsored
events including the March for Life in Washington D.C., the Louisiana Life March and The
40 Days for Life.
STM Manna Givers Ministry One of the Corporal Works of Mercy we are called to serve as Catholic-Christians is to
feed the hungry. Each month various teams of volunteers from St. Thomas More cook and
serve an evening meal at one of the three St. Vincent de Paul/Bishop Shelter location for
homeless men and women since the shelters have no kitchen facilities. Most teams serve
once a month; some every other month.
Parish Festival The annual parish festival is the most exciting event of the year. Hundreds are called
upon to make this weekend come alive with fun, fellowship and faith. The festival is held
each year the first full weekend in May. Planning begins as early as September to focus on
details such as food booths, games, rides, silent and live auctions and much more. This
tradition has been a success for over 30 years. All are asked to volunteer time and talent
by working in a game or food booth, or by assisting in set up and clean up. See you under
the big tent!
Parish Picnic Both adults and high school youth are needed to assist in this fun day of games and
festivities. The picnic is held on a Sunday in mid-October from 11 am until 3 pm.
(October 28, 2018) Volunteers are needed to assist in set-up the day before, overseeing
games and take down. High school volunteers are needed to run the children’s games, in-
cluding face painting, ring toss, hula hoop and much more.

Monthly food collection takes place next weekend Parishioners are asked to bring food for the poor of Eden Park to
Mass next weekend, Sept. 15-16.
We are reminded that Christian love encompasses care and concern
for all humanity, especially those who in these difficult economic times
may not have enough food for the table. We can help the local poor,
our most immediate neighbors, by providing canned goods and non-
perishable staples to the pantry at St. Paul the Apostle Church.
Donations should be left in the storage chest in the back of the
church before or after next weekend’s Masses. Smaller containers
work best because the food is divided into separate baskets for
distribution.
