Dear APAC Colleagues,

The coaching world is getting more and more crowded. It is becoming increasingly difficult for coaches, especially novice coaches, to figure out how to stand out. The variety of offerings available add to the confusion as the market seems to have all the answers and nothing more to add. In other words, making oneself visible or ‘marketing and branding’ is something most coaches struggle with.

There are of course innumerable people out there offering free advice on how best to build one’s brand and market oneself. The tips include building a website to building social media presence to networking. Almost all acknowledge that to stand apart and attract the right kind of clients, one needs a unique brand position and a strong market presence. Furthermore, if one is just starting out in a coaching business, there are numerous consultants who will actually help you package your services and brand yourself so that your business is more attractive to potential clients.

In my experience, whilst outward focus like concentrating on customer base, appreciating environmental needs, and creating a marketing plan is important, inward focus is the game changer. I have seen many coaches trying to build their brand on ‘what’s in’ or ‘what works’, and “what brings in money” and not fulfilling their potential.

Building one’s brand starts with acknowledging one’s own uniqueness. One needs to appreciate what’s exceptional and special about oneself and one’s coaching. You are unique, what no one else has, and that is going to appeal most to your clients. You can build a brand around yourself that will attract the right types of clients that need to work with you specifically. It will lay the foundation for a unique and powerful brand. It will elevate your business, set you apart, and attract a clientele that resonates with you at a deeper level. Also, marketing the brand will be relatively easy as you are marketing what’s best in you and not trying to fit in with something that is not you.

I am happy to acknowledge that as a brand, APAC has a space of its own. We are the coaching voice of the Asia Pacific region. Our offerings, especially our conferences, aim to articulate our brand promise. To take this promise further, APAC plans to publish a book on APAC wisdom. This book is our endeavor to articulate our brand potential. Feel free to write to me to be a part of this endeavor.

Cheers,

DR. ANNE DOLLY KUZHIMADATHIL APAC President

APAC’s Certificate of Honour

apac focus5

Presenting the first recipient of APAC’s Certificate of Honour, Dr. Woraphat Arthayukti! APAC Founder Foo See Luan presented our Certificate of Honour together with a book as a gesture of thanks for all the time and effort Dr. Woraphat has contributed since APAC was founded more than a decade ago.

Here’s what colleagues and friends have to say:

Having worked closely with Dr. Woraphat from the founding of APAC a decade ago, it was a high honour and a distinct privilege to present him with APAC’s Certificate of Honour and a memento book on 14 February 2018 at his beautiful home in Bangkok in the presence of his wife Chalermporn and my wife Anna.

Dr. Woraphat is the only APAC member to have served with distinction as APAC President, Council of President member, and Chair of the Nominations Committee. He is also the first recipient of APAC’ s Certificate of Honour.

As my esteemed colleagues will be writing about the many and diverse contributions of Dr. Woraphat, I fondly say that Dr. Woraphat is acknowledged and revered as a foundational pillar of APAC, a strong and well-loved leader with many followers. He is fluent in three languages, English, French, and Thai.

Above everything else, Dr. Woraphat is a true gentleman and a great role model, ever generous and always ready to lend a helping hand.

Foo See Luan Founder, APAC

A fine gentleman & a role model. These are the words that come to mind when I think of Dr. Woraphat. His humane attitude, mindfulness, and respect for all, commands respect and love. In my association with him, I have found him soft-spoken & always ready to help. When I took on the PR Chair role, he went out of his way to ensure that I had all it took to be successful in my role. His actions have never been self-serving, and the interests of APAC have always been uppermost in his mind. Personally, he exudes warmth, kindness, courtesy, and care. On behalf of the entire APAC community, I thank him for his invaluable contributions to APAC and wish him every sense of fulfillment in all his future endeavors.

Dr. Anne Dolly Kuzhimadathil President, APAC

I was fortunate to have met Dr. Woraphat at a retreat following the 2017 Conference and was highly impressed by his quiet Leadership style. His warmth, kindness, and humanity came across, and as peace maker, he built bridges and lent a calming influence, exemplifying respect and mindfulness. He and his charming wife Chalermporn made a special trip to Singapore to meet the new Singapore based EXCO and Committee members. We appreciated his investment in time and the expense he undertook to show support and encouragement, reinforcing APAC's climate and 'family' culture. He is a man of many talents; author of books on coaching and the Asian Hornbill. We hope that he will find great pleasure in the token gift.

Eliza Quek First Vice President, APAC

I have known Dr. Woraphat for a decade. He is a man of distinction with integrity, diplomacy, prudence, professionalism, exemplary behavior, endearing charm, warmth, sustained passion, commitment, and dedication to APAC.

He has unique, exclusive, and diverse interests, gifts, and talents involving oil and gas exploration and production as Chairman of Northern Gulf Petroleum Pte Ltd., a flair and fervor for Hornbills, affection and zeal for the variety and research of different species of Hornbills as Chairman of the Hornbill Research Foundation Bangkok, and has travelled to different countries to share his findings and his fieldwork. He has taken an array of beautiful and awesome hornbills pictures - a feast for the eyes!

He is also captivated by flora and foliage and has contributed a chapter on Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden in the book "Paradise Found - Journey through Noble Gardens of Asia”.

I applaud Dr. Woraphat, and APAC's Certificate of Honour celebrates and expresses our gratitude to a remarkable man who has devoted a decade of significant contributions to APAC!

With thanks and appreciation to Dr. Woraphat.

Coach Marketing

apac waves10

For many years as a coach in the UK and with many contacts built up over several years, I found results and work easy to come by as businesses and previous coachees referred me.

However, when I moved to Hong Kong and started afresh, I found that providing great results and networking alone were not enough to give me the referrals I needed. I spoke to other highly capable coaches who all appeared to be finding marketing themselves a real challenge. Hence I decided to set up a business to help coaches market themselves. We asked clients what they wanted from coach marketing.

There were some things they said they did want and some things they didn’t want! They said traditional coach profiles all looked too similar, and they wanted coaches to differentiate themselves more.

Client LIKES:

• Clients said they wanted short 2-3 minute videoprofiles that demonstrate their style and includeexamples of the results they have achieved.

• They want to get a feel for what it would be like towork with you, with the focus to be less on thecoach’s career history and more on how the coach canhelp the coachee by sharing how they have helpedothers.

• They want coaches to have a clear “niche” where theyspecialize more than others.

I urge you to consider all ways of marketing yourself to get clients:

• Market yourself and your business via your ownwebsite and linked in campaigns. Most popular areconnections via LinkedIn (for business coaching) andFacebook (for life coaching).

• Clients have less and less time and will set upchemistry meetings based in less and less informationso I urge you to make a 2-3 minute video profile in2018 and use it when putting yourself forward for allpotential assignments. It’s becoming a criticaldifferentiator!

• Network like crazy with targeted connections.

• Do pro bono coaching.

• Consider associate work.• Get yourself on modern coaching platforms where

clients go to find coaching companies and coaches.Examples include websites such as: Coach Connector,Noomii, ICF, APAC, Coach Source, etc. Each has itsown differentiating features. Make an effort to findout what those features are and promote yourself viathe websites that best match your values, locations, target audience, and their/your needs.

Fraser Murray is a coach with Rock the Boat and also CEO of www.coachconnector.com, who specialize in helping coaches promote themselves via the most advanced global platform in the sector. It’s free to join and has no monthly membership fees but requires you to create a coach profile of the highest standards to be allowed to market yourself on their site. Coaches keep 90% of fees for any work they get via clients who find them on the platform.

Your Ideal Client Profile

apac waves11

1.  Why do some coaches constantly shine like stars, yet others explode onto the scene like supernovas, only to fade out and disappear?

2.  Why are some coaches like meteors - here todayand gone tomorrow?

3.  or in more down-to-earth terms: Why do somecoaches run sustainable businesses, while somedon't?

The answer to these questions is revealed in the 3Ps of sustainable coaching success.

What does it take to constantly shine like a star, as opposed to fading away like a meteor due to lack of time, energy, and money? Of course, the answer is SYSTEMS. It is imperative that you put systems in place to assist you in running your coaching practice, because systems run the business, not you! Your job is to run the systems.

One system that I recommend to all coaches - new, experienced, or in between, is to gain clarity around your ideal client profile. How can we attract them if we don’t know who they are?

If you don’t have an ideal client profile, I encourage you to stop reading right now and get out your calendar. Schedule 30 minutes within the next two days to create one. If you already have an ideal client profile, I also encourage you to schedule 30 minutes over the next two days to revisit and update it.

If you are not sure of your ideal client, here are

the demographics (gender, age, occupation, location, socio-economic status, etc) and characteristics (such as their values, beliefs, standards, qualities, etc) that I include in my ideal client profile. Be sure to include a mix of demographics and characteristics that YOU want to attract.

As coaches, I believe we all want to work with someone who:

• Is willing to take action

• Is independent and willing to do the work (rememberthe coach doesn’t do the work, the client does)

• Will show up to your coaching sessions on time• Will pay you on time (very important)

• Is willing to invest in themselves• Will tell you the truth

I also add the following: • 50% corporate - senior management, executive and

board level• 25% small business owners/entrepreneurs

• 25% coaches (mentoring and supervision)• prepares for our sessions - uses prep form

• looking for or investigating WHO they are, both inthe workplace and personally

• sessions flow

• leave the coaching session feeling energized• moving towards something, vs away from (oscillating)

• express gratitude• long term relationship > 12 months

• effortless for me to coach• we both have fun - sense of humor, laughter long

term• I learn from them

• I feel energized before, during and after their sessions

So, what is your IDEAL CLIENT PROFILE? Do take the time to create this, then you can work towards attracting the perfect clients for you.

Facing Disruption in Coaching

Q&A with Chip McFarlane, MCC

apac waves13

IECL’s Director of Training Chip McFarlane, MCC, sat down with Nicole Sitosta to discuss how organizational coaching is evolving and the threats and opportunities that disruption is bringing. He also shared what current organizational coaches need to develop in themselves to move with, and ahead of, the times.

Q: SO, CHIP, HOW HAS ORGANIZATIONAL COACHING BEEN AFFECTED BY THE EVER-CHANGING BUSINESS LANDSCAPE?

Chip: If you look at coaching’s history, disruptions have always been part of the environment. The initial disruption to “pure” coaching was when coaching was used as a remedial tool to “fix problem children” or help promote executives with “rough edges”. However, in time, businesses started to see coaching as a development tool, which forced coaches to stop looking for problems and start thinking about growth.

Another major disrupter in coaching happened when large scale corporate clients wanted coaching panels, using many coaches with different traditions and approaches. This move affected sole traders, as clients were looking for consortiums, or

Page 14: THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE ASIA PACIFIC ALLIANCE OF ... · APAC’s Certificate of Honour and a memento book ... our 1.5 day retreat at the cosy NUS guild house at Suntec City

apac waves14

organizations like IECL, for consistency across a larger geographic reach. Fewer and fewer one-man bands were getting a look in for larger jobs, as demands and needs became more sophisticated.

Today, we look at coaching as a wonderful human-to-human interaction, aided by digital programs like Skype or Zoom, which allow us a face-to-face style interaction with someone. There are also tools now that help to guide productivity, that can be brought into the coaching space.

Q: TELL US MORE ABOUT THESE TOOLS THAT AID COACHING; ARE THESE A THREAT TO HOW COACHES CAN CONNECT WITH PEOPLE?

Chip: It depends on how sophisticated one’s coaching is. If you are currently an organizational coach who is limited to the rudimentary foundations, for example basic GROW model, then you will find that there are some growing applications out there that can do that for people, such as PocketConfidant AI. This app provides a series of questions that can

guide someone through a coaching experience, with prompts thereafter to see how the user is progressing with their commitment to their actions.

An Alumni member recently countered that to get the most from someone, a human-to-human interaction is important. I said not necessarily; take for instance ‘Dear Diary’ or its adult equivalent, journaling. It didn’t require anyone else’s interaction, and yet you put your heart into introspection.

That said, on the other side, what the self-interaction with a program can generate is a person saying, “I do want to talk to someone, I do want human interaction,” bringing in the possibility for exposing more people to coaching.

Today’s organizational coaches need to use what they’ve learnt to deepen how they coach. For example, coaching can be deepened with life experience. A computer can’t do that. Take your training development beyond the basics. When people take our Level 2 coach training, they learn the relational piece and can take that to a deeper place in practice. In Level 3, they learn the conversational piece, which cannot be replicated by a computer, as it requires a deep and intimate connection.

As you take your coaching development further, you gain greater and greater nuance, sophistication, and subtlety. You are already playing in an obsolete space if you keep your coaching foundational. Bring in the other pieces that will make you relevant to the market place.

One of the things I remember hearing from David Clutterbuck, Coaching and Mentoring Guru and Founder of EMCC, is that the skill level of people who are coming forward as coaches is surprisingly low, and they have gone through development, but not taking it and living it. They may have done a degree, but the course classroom is just one piece – you need to get out there and practice and thicken your narrative.

Page 15: THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE ASIA PACIFIC ALLIANCE OF ... · APAC’s Certificate of Honour and a memento book ... our 1.5 day retreat at the cosy NUS guild house at Suntec City

apac waves15

Q: AS AN MCC YOU HAVE YEARS UPON YEARS OF PRACTICE. WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR COACHES WITH LESS YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN TACKLING THEIR PRACTICE?

Chip: For me, one element is to jump in and do it. Earlier in my career, I would walk off on the side and try to perfect it, to get it right. That became the inhibitor for me. It’s when I started jumping into it and learnt about it from the inside that I moved forward. If you are in rapport with someone, and they get that you care about them. If you make a “mis-take,” not a mistake, they will be forgiving about it. You can ask them another question, and it will land differently. Sometimes they will even say “It’s not quite like that, but it’s like this…”. When a counterpart gets that you care about them, and not what you can get from them, there’s more leeway.

Chip McFarlane, MCC, is one of Australia’s first and most experienced executive coaches and a master facilitator. Chip has the presence, energy, and acumen to work with the most senior audiences, holding the room and provoking performance.

You can easily recover from something, rather than trying not to make a mistake.

Keep learning, that’s one of the bigger ones. Coaching is a multidisciplinary craft. See how assessment tools, human psychology and dynamics, plus the world in general can affect your counterpart and pull it into coaching. Allow for multiple points of input to give your coaching depth and breadth.

•  Keep updating our pro bono coaching volunteer list as members move and have other commitments, whilst fresh volunteers take their places.

•  Expand into coaching in the local language, where there is a clear need, when we have the required resources.

•  Continue to develop an active, committed, results-focused team that enjoys its work.

ARE THERE ANY MARKETING AND/OR BRANDING TOOLS THAT YOU HAVE FOUND HELPFUL OR NOTEWORTHY?

The APAC website establishes our brand clearly (in relation to other coaching organizations), helping to market APAC as the range of services and benefits are clear. It also enables us to showcase APAC’s achievements, e.g. through testimonials from satisfied clients of APAC’s pro bono coaching projects. Our new website continues to be enhanced and optimized.

Our Coaching Conferences every two years bring together in one place experts from the world of coaching and related subjects, under a different theme at each conference. This is a very potent marketing and branding tool, as APAC becomes highly visible. Its credibility and contribution to coaching is acknowledged, and we differentiate APAC from other coaching organizations.

The APAC Facebook page enables more quick interactions with members, with frequent updates on APAC activities, e.g. useful information about ongoing activities and a dialogue, almost in real time! We also feature useful information and knowledge relating to coaching. Our LinkedIn group provides a fourth marketing tool, as we have more coaching related discussions and many interactions with members as well as providing information on events and other useful information in the coaching world. Both LinkedIn and Facebook provide a useful monitor of interest and passion by members and others.

A martial arts student went to his teacher and said earnestly, “I am devoted to studying your martial system. How long will it take me to master it?”

The teacher’s reply was casual. “Ten years.” Impatiently, the student answered, “But I want to master it faster than that. I will work very hard. I will practice everyday, ten or more hours a day if I have to. How long will it take then?”

The teacher thought for a moment, “20 years.”

Some things cannot be hurried. More haste, less speed.

The Final Say

the final say31

Hello Everyone! Here we are in the second quarter of the year! So far, we have celebrated the arrival of the year of the dog during Chinese New Year and Easter amidst feasts, families, and lots of fun.

This newsletter’s theme was ‘Coaching Marketing & Branding’ as we found that the biggest factor in establishing a coaching business is in marketing and branding. As I discovered very early on in my career, if you can’t sell, you can’t coach! We have some interesting articles on marketing on industry experts and trust you have enjoyed reading them.

Our first recipient of APAC’s Certificate of Honour, Dr. Woraphat Arthayukti is a remarkably fascinating individual as various esteemed coaches have testified in the accolades in the newsletter. Dr. Woraphat is also the person who introduced and brought me into APAC and led to a much richer tapestry of life with amazing friendships all over the world.

APAC had our first EXCO Retreat in Singapore and brainstormed and refined our 2-year plans to better serve you! In light of the theme, we now offer advertising opportunities in our new website as well as the newsletter. There’s a great way to market yourself to reach a wider audience.

Lastly, we are proud to announce our 2019 Conference in Amazing India! Showcasing the veritable treasure trove of wisdom from Asia, we couldn’t have found a better location for our next conference. See you there!!

Warmly,

Michelle Woo PR Committee Chair
