SECRETARY’S REPORTSECRETARY’S REPORTSECRETARY’S REPORT

MEETING OPENED : 7.40 pm PRESENT : 35 members APOLOGIES : David Merryweather , Peter and Jennifer McDonald , Robynne Lilly , Steve Hobbins , Ian and Jenny Vaughan. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING : Ken moved that the January general Meeting minutes printed in the February Hub be accepted as read. SECONDED : Peter Dwyer and carried. BUSINESS ARISING : Nil CORRESPONDENCE IN : # Westpac cheque and cash reserve statements for January . # Invitations : Maitland Steamfest and Tea Gardens Motorfest. # Invoices from: LMC for Hub printing , Lings Trophies . # Membership application: Tim and Kath Davies. # Club magazines from Sydney , Victoria and ACT plus MG club. CORRESPONDENCE OUT : # Presidents welcome letter to the Davies . # email from Bill to Club Macquarie with termination advice. # email from Phil to Hexham Club thanking them for their offer of a venue , and advising of our decision. Ken moved that the correspondence be accepted. SECONDED : Don Anderson and carried. TREASURER : Margaret tabled her Income / Expenditure statement for January 2016 and Balance Sheet , members seeking further detail are invited to contact her directly. Margaret moved that her report be accepted . SECONDED : Graeme Cox and carried. SOCIAL SECRETARY : Bill reported on recent and proposed events , details may be found in his report later in these pages. Bill then put the following proposal recently adopted by the Committee to the meeting : “ That a second Club Dinner be held , in addition to the traditional end of year Presentation Dinner , on Fri-day evening 1st April at our new Club , and that the ( approx. $30 cost ) of the meal be 50% subsidised by JDCHR , for members.” This was overwhelmingly carried on a show of hands. Bill also announced that the March Singleton meeting , if held at the usual time , would fall on Good Friday . The Committee had therefore elected to bring it forward to Wednesday 23rd March , subject to the availability of the venue. CLUB PLATES REGISTRAR : Don Anderson reported that the new log book trial scheme is being heavily policed during the week , resulting in fines of over $400 for drivers using their club plated cars and not filling out the log book. The subsequent general discussion revealed that there is still quite some confusion and conflicting opinion about the operation of this trial scheme amongst our members. Peter Dwyer’s advice is to always carry a copy of the RMS rules , along with any club notices concerning the outing ( Hub etc. ) , to provide the best chance of escaping trouble with the police , some of whom seem to share our confusion about the club plates scheme. EVENTS COORDINATOR : Don Anderson gave an overview of preparations being made by the manage-ment committee for the 2017 National Rally to be held at Port Stephens. This is the first time that JDCHR has been so heavily involved with JDCA in the organisation of this Rally. Phil Mcleod has been appointed as post Rally tour manager , and Don will be calling on other members to lend a hand as the event approaches. There being no further reports from other Office Bearers , the meeting moved on to :

Members and Family with birthdays in March are :

Janelle Chapman (2nd); Marg Patriarca (3rd)

Ian Chapman & Peter Williamson (4th)

Margaret Hobbins (5th); Ian Hissey & Margaret Perry (9th) Edna Hurdman & Denis Shanahan (10th); Helen Rix (17th);

Norm Crowfoot (19th); Lesley Harvey (23rd); Paul Harris (24th) Kelly McInness (26th); Steve Saladine (28th);

May your birthdays be filled with good health, laughter and safe driving.

GENERAL BUSINESS : Ian raised website issues with Andrew Haigh , ie unpublished Hub backlog , and continuing problems with redirection of emails . Andrew to expedite. Ian also mentioned that the ACJC are working on a system to link all club magazines on the web. Ian mentioned some issues raised at the ACJC meeting last weekend in Sydney , where he was slaving away while the rest of us were enjoying a day “ Lost In The 50s” at Cameron park. There is a marked decline in numbers for the National Rally , accommodation bookings for 2017 at Nelson Bay are presently some 50% down on the last time the event was held in this region. This is in part due to the ever increasing cost of participation , but the event is possibly in need of revitalisation in some way , Ian would be pleased to receive suggestions. The recently released XE model is being purchased by a much younger demographic ( 35 -40 ) than past models , and efforts are being made by the ACJC to attract these drivers into the club movement .The XE is being purchased on its merits , rather than its badge . It is hoped that club membership will introduce these owners to the wonderful heritage of the Jaguar marque, and that they will learn about , and appreciate and collect , the older classic models. Margaret Perry invited members to consider donating small prizes to be used in the monthly club raffles. PROBLEM CORNER : John Moreman has discovered , after some heartbreak , that a special tool kit is required to retract brake caliper pistons on the XKR , which apparently must be screwed , rather than pushed in , to allow the pads to be replaced. John has purchased this kit. Unfortunately , this has had no effect on the pedestrian safety system alert light , which continues to glow menacingly . Our previous general alert to all pedestrians to stay well clear of this car therefore remains in force until further notice. As Peter Lloyd did not attend the last award presentation dinner , Ian took the opportunity to present his 1st place trophy to him during tea and coffee at the meeting’s end. RAFFLE : Bottles of wine won by Peter Smith and Allan Reilly.

MEETING CLOSED : at 9.30 pm , another great night at our fantastic new venue.

SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORTSOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORTSOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT

Bill Whitby

We were off to an early start to the month with the run to the Dam Hotel with the Central Coast British Car Club, it was an awesome day with the variety of cars along for the run, and the two clubs socialising, made the day well worthwhile attending. We had seventy plus members and over forty cars along for the run. The other event was the visit to the ‘Lost in the Fifties’ car museum at Cameron Park. Another an excellent turn out of members for the visit with thirty members and guests along for the day. If you want to show off your Jaguar, join in the Newcastle Show Grand Parade Friday 4 March, and carry a showgirl for the parade, let me know if you wish to join in the fun of the fair. Coming up is the week end away at Murrurundi on 5-6 march, with the visit to the Vaughan’s, the Arrowfield racehorse stud and the Nundle wooden mills. Let me know if you are intending to come along, the Vaughn’s and bistro’s will want to know how many to cater for. Hawk’s Nest Motorfest is on Saturday 12th, it is always a good event with plenty to see and do, there is many classic car clubs there for the day, The Mid Week Run this month is on Thursday 17th to Gilmore’s cafe at Singleton, which is next door to the Royal Hotel on the new England Highway, then on to Denman for lunch at the Denman Hotel, we we’ll return via the Golden Highway. I have made the preliminary enquiries to attend the Floriade spring festival in Canberra in October. We will be going for the weekend Friday 7 to Monday 10 October (flyer on page 43). The Canberra Jaguar Club will host a dinner on the Saturday night and a tour run on Sunday. It will be a great weekend, but Floriade is very popular and we will need to book early (several months) to secure accommodation. On Saturday 23 July the Jaguar Car Club of Victoria is holding the 2016 Winton Track Day, it is a day exclu-sively for Jaguars and we will be attending as a club event. More to come in the next edition of the Hub As you can see by the calendar there is many events coming up, too many to mention here. If you are com-ing to any event please let me know as early as you can, as seating at restaurants etc. have to be booked in advance. At the February meeting the committee put forward a motion that we have a Social Dinner around March/April, and make it an annual event, this being the inaugural dinner JDCHR will subsidise it, the motion was carried unanimously. The dinner is on Friday evening 1 April, check the flyer on page 36. The other dinner we have is the Presentation Dinner which has the night taken up with the ceremonies, this dinner there will be no ceremonies, just a fun night for all. There will be a sumptuous two course dinner, and light entertainment provided, all for $16.00 PP (members). Please reserve your seat ASAP as there is a lot of organising to complete, and it has to be finalised by Monday 21 March. The Cruise in December is on, and it is time to think about booking if you are coming. The Sydney and Can-berra Jaguar clubs have been invited to join us, with a few already booked. The last cruise with the Jaguar Clubs was fantastic, and this one is shaping up to be just as much fun, book early, don’t miss this opportunity for the one of the best holidays you could have. We are looking forward to seeing you at some of the many events that are coming up over the next couple of months

FROM THE EDITORFROM THE EDITORFROM THE EDITOR

From mid March your editor and his wife Janet are embarking on a six months trip around Austra-lia in our caravan. Heading down to South Australia, across the Nullarbor and around the Western Australia coast, across the NT and into North Queensland for the winter. I will continue to edit THE HUB, if somewhat remotely. As I some live someway from Newcastle I do rely very heavily on certain committee members, namely Phil McLeod and Bill Whitby for articles and photos of Club events. We are always looking for contributions from members, accordingly I have included on the next 2 pages an article by Peter Lloyd encouraging member contributions. Peter gave this presentation at a meeting late last year. If you have any items to contribute send them to [email protected] or [email protected]

As we know, one of the major problems with a club magazine is to be able to encourage members to provide interesting copy to cover more of the di-versity of members’ experiences and pursuits. Often it is left to the senior offi-cer positions to insert their routine reports and just a very few regulars to contrib-ute the reports of club-related events. What I would like to see is an opening up of the forum to a broader variety of subject matter to hopefully attract content from more of our members. To do this, the initiative needs to be generated by the inclusion of typical examples of some of this subject matter. Members who normally don’t participate with their own submissions might be more comfortable once they see a range of subjects contributed by others that are not always the traditional. I propose to boost this by submitting some of my own considerable range of motoring related experiences. Though they may be from a ‘technologically inferior time’, they are interesting.

For this I am proposing a range of subjects to fall into just a few catego-

ries. These subjects are devised to raise the inspiration of members because collectively we will have a vast array of experiences and knowledge gained over our motoring years. I decided to raise this with the club for a few reasons. Many, many years ago in a past life, I was assisting with the editing of a club magazine and found out how difficult it is to sometimes fill a magazine with a variety of information to avoid each issue being rather dry and too narrowly fo-cussed in content. And, just recently, I started putting pen to paper - does any-one know how to do that anymore? This project was intended for the benefit of my family, but I realised as I progressed, that these were suitable for general readership. It is about the many and varied experiences related to my motoring involvement in different parts of the world and the unexpected events and prob-lems that accompanied those times. And some are very interesting and unusual indeed.

Maybe it is a little ‘tongue-in-cheek’, I am suggesting that all these can be put into one section in the magazine and which I am calling by the acronym DRATS!, as in ‘Oh, drat!’ This can be debated, of course, but the intent is to create a general section that is not necessarily Jaguar, or even car, centric.

DRATS! D for Drive, Disasters, Disappointments, Damage, Did

You Know…. R for Recoveries, Restoration tips, Regulations. A for Alternatives, Aggravations, Advice, Attempts,

Avoids, T for Tech Torque, Tips, Tests, Tries, Technical Expertise

Support. S for Safety, Standards, Spares.

Although some of these titles may be self-explanatory, I would like to give a brief explanation of each of these categories and add that I have quite a lot of information and tales to tell that will kick-start the con-tent of many of these groups and I can progressively submit them for con-sideration.

Before that I would like to add another stand-alone title, my favourite,

‘Tales from the Motoring Diary’. Tales from the Motoring Diary. (Motoring ventures that became adventures.) See Page 17. This is for giving an account of a motoring adventure. I stress the

word ‘adventure’ because it is about a motoring related situation that was unusual, risky, unexpected, that you have experienced in your years of travel. Travelogues, plain touring, and ‘ooh..aah look at that’ stories are not applicable. It can be just one short paragraph or one page, but must focus on the situation, and not the whole trip. Everyone will have an amusing, near miss, or ‘..if only…’ story if they think back.

Peter Lloyd.

This was the first time we have began a run from our new meeting venue at the Diggers Club Wallsend. The Jaguars looked magnificent in the open carpark which is behind the main covered carpark station. I arrived early and directed some members as they arrived, to the open carpark at the rear, a few drove di-rectly to the covered parking station but they soon found their way outside. The day was off to a good begin-ning with fourteen Jaguars at the start, and more to join in along the way. Because we were going to an unfamiliar spot with the Central Coast British Car Club for morning tea, I gath-ered the members together and gave simple directions, but assured those with a GPS that the GPS location on the flyer would get them there OK. It has been an informal policy of JDCHR for some time not to travel in a tight conga line procession for safety reasons. Since that time I have included a GPS location for stops and destinations in the flyers. It has been a good move by our club, making the runs so much safer, and no confusion about locations, although we still have a couple of members without a GPS device. For morning tea we joined up with the CCBCC at Wyee point, when we arrived they were already there and parked there was an impressive variety of British cars, and now with an equal number of Jaguars the cars looked stunning. Most of the CCBCC were there to welcome us, but still more were arriving, and it wasn’t long before we had quite a crowd. We have been out with them before and it was great to be catching up again, the conversa-tions and mutual car admirations went on for some time. Members from both clubs showing off their cars to each other, sort of a mutual admiration society going on. The two social secretary’s soon realised that there were a few more attending than was expected, we phoned the Dam Hotel and informed them of the higher number, the hotel staff were very obliging and said they would be able cater for the additional number. Doing a quick head count we had in excess of seventy for lunch, and now more than forty five cars, a very impressive turn out. We are to take the scenic route to the Dam Hotel for lunch, heading back towards Newcastle for a few kilo-metres before turning east toward the coast and returning south along the shoreline back to the Dam Hotel. There is detailed instructions in the flyer with exact distances to the next turn, all the way. But it seems that not a lot of members bothered not to follow the scenic route and proceeded on the direct route to the hotel. It was a pity for those that took that direct route, a quick dash down the old Pacific Highway as against a pictur-esque coastal meander to the lunch. Our members were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the Dam Hotel, most had never been there and for those that had, it was many years ago when the road was the main Pacific Highway, and the old Dam Hotel was a pit stop on the way home from Sydney. There was plenty of room for all of us and some to spare. The meals were delicious and very reasonably priced. The only disappointment perceived by the two social secretaries was that each club was seated as groups around the tables, we are going to organise the seating at our next outing so that both clubs are min-gled. It was a wonderful day for both clubs, we enjoyed each others company for the day, and we are looking for-ward to the next time we get together.

After the regular monthly meeting of the car club, some of the members joined for the usual late coffee. There was a café in the basement of Latec House that stayed open a bit late and was good for a coffee and a snack. The popular treat was raisin toast, or maybe cheese on toast, with a coffee or green tea. The poor waitress was run off her feet keeping up the supply of victuals. The talk drifted on to travel and a few ex-pressed their interest in going to England for a working holiday. But how to get there? The usual means were by jet or ship. A few chose ship and another few, the plane. Neither appealed as both seemed so ho-hum – ‘…everybody goes that way’. So someone said “Why don’t we drive?” The advantage of being a twenty-something with no commitments, very naïve and unworldly allows you to say “yes” without a second thought to something as outlandish and bizarre as this suggestion. We didn’t understand why our mothers were not quite so excited. But like recalcitrant teenagers, we were going anyway. Our mothers aged ten years overnight. That was forty-five years ago and was the commencement of a real road adventure. One that would steer much of the direction of my life and allow me to see and experience things in the places that are rarely on the standard tourist itinerary and that are normally seen only by relatively few. Many were disturbing, dangerous and risky. Feeling the effects first hand, of non-democratic regimes, military states, and bureaucracies that provide uncertainty about one’s freedom and rights, in retrospect is quite a jolt. Many of the names and titles herein could be those current at the time and may have been now superseded. The first step was to confirm if this was feasible. It was, but rarely done as a private venture. A track was traced out on a world map laid out on Bruce’s mum’s kitchen table. Many calls were made to embassies and consulates, who freely gave information, the occasional map and handled visa applications. There were many overland tours run by Kon Tiki and the like, so the travel by road was well worn, but usually in the west to east direction for the Aussies and Kiwis returning home. It is not difficult technically to drive from Singa-pore, or even back further, from Jakarta, to London with the aid of a few ferries and bridges. After all, the Asian Highway had recently been joined up through all countries. There was one minor problem – Afghani-stan had no representation in Australia. The only way to get into Afghanistan was to present oneself at the frontier and make application in person. Could this have been refused? Of course. Did that deter us? Of course not. Politically it was a different matter. A whole different matter. In those days there were more hot spots smoul-dering across south-east Asia than in a footy final barbecue fry-up. The Communist threat and Middle East unrest was rife and well entrenched and expecting the authorities to promote the ease of entry or movement within a country for foreigners, or anyone was not high on their priority lists. Then there was some political or militant unrest growing in Iraq which we had little information on. There was also much trouble in Burma or Myanmar (not to mention Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos), and to skirt it would mean heading into Communist territories and a corner of China that is one of the most inhospitable regions on earth best suited to horses or donkeys. Oh, and guns were advisable for personal safety.

To be continued

This is an anecdotal tale of events that Bruce Morley and I undertook in 1971. The risks

associated with repeating this endeavour are at such a level today, that some of the coun-

tries, being so dangerous, not only would you not want to travel through them, you would

not want to fly anywhere near them. The period up to the early seventies was a time which

had a lull in hostilities and political upheaval within countries, between neighbours, and

between East and West – ‘ between wars’ – for the countries from South East Asia to Cen-

tral Europe. Our blasé approach allowed us to ignore what could happen to change things,

literally, overnight. To us, all seemed quite peaceful and logical and most disagreements

seemed to be around the Israel and Egypt area and we had no intention of passing near

that zone.

WOW what day at the ‘Lost in The 50’s’ car museum. It was a glorious day as we gathered at the Wall-send Diggers, we were to leave by 9:00am ready for an early arrival at the museum. I knew that was neces-sary to get to the museum early as parking could be an issue. Luckily they had reserved a parking area within the premises to display the Jaguars. We arrived just prior to the rest of the visitors. which made it so much easier for us. We arrived and were ushered into the reserved section of the parking area, where they had a DJ pumping out the music from the fifties and sixties blaring across the area. There were some Rock ’N’ Roll dancers on the dance floor, all dressed in their fifties outfits and hairdo’s. A really great start to get you in the mood for the day to come. I was greeted by Glen, the owner, he passed on his welcome to the Jaguar Club and hoped that we would enjoy his cars as much as he does. I assured him that we were all car enthusiasts and looking forward to the museum. It was a real carnival atmosphere, with the music, the dancers, the classic cars, food and coffee stalls and lots of car enthusiasts wandering around. Right on queue the museum opened at 9:30 and we began to pour in. The museum is divided into two sides, on one side is Hot Rod Hall, with the Batmobile, Delorean, Eleanor, Hot Rods and muscle cars, on the other side is his collection of American cars from the fifties and sixties, all look to be concourse, a dazzling display of chrome and classic Americana. The area between the two sides has a classic ‘burger bar that was popular in the period. The counter of the bar has a mannequin dressed appropriately and all the trimmings from the day, the kitchen behind the bar has appliances that were used at that time. Beside the Burger bar and kitchen is another room full of memorabilia, radios, toys posters, collectables and much much more. A truly amazing place to visit. It was just after midday when we left for the Diggers Club for lunch. I had reserved tables for us and we were soon seated and ordering lunch. This is the first time we have been to lunch at the Diggers as a club, and everyone was pleased with the quality and the quantity of the meals. As usual when we get together over a lunch the time seems to go by so quickly, good company and nice surroundings, then you check your watch. We were there for almost three hours before going home after an amazing day.
