If you pick one area to see in the New River Gorge National River, make it Grandview. This part of the park is known for its sweeping overlook set on the rim of the New River Gorge. Hike around the park on one of six trails, where you can find unique rock structures and incredible views. Don’t forget to pack a picnic—there are plenty of picnic areas to choose from. In the spring, Catawba rhododendron bushes bloom, filling the park with their pink, purple and white flowers.

Enjoy the outdoors at this 562-acre park with plenty of recreation available including year-round fishing at the lake. Many types of fish, such as bass, crappie, channel cat, bluegill and trout can be found in the 18-acre lake. Paddle boats, canoes, row boats and kayaks rentals are available in season. All trails are open for both hiking and biking.The park also boasts a 46-site campground, thirty of which are available on a first come basis. These sites have water and electric. Additionally, the park has five picnic shelters which can be rented, playgrounds, geocaching and an activities building.

Four railroad boxcars make up the main gallery with ever changing educational exhibits. A “Peace Totem” welcomes you to the site.Groups can visit the Planetarium with seasonal programs highlighting constellations, visible planets and special celestial events.The Mountain Homestead is a typical settlement from the Appalachian frontier days. Visit the weaver’s shed, log house, one room school, barn, blacksmith shop and general store for a trip through history you will not soon forget.

Guests can ride through the dark passages of a vintage coal mine onboard a “man-trip” for the tour and travel 1,500 feet around various mined out areas. Veteran guides give an overview of the Mine and history of underground coal mining, earning it a 2018 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence.In addition to the Mine, you can tour the period coal camp buildings situated throughout the grounds. Lovingly restored, the Coal Company House, Superintendent’s Home, Pemberton Coal Camp Church and the Helen Coal Camp School, give visitors a true representation of early 20th century coal camp life. The Exhibition Coal Mine operates on a seasonal schedule, opening on April 1 and closing November 1.

The historic home of Beckley’s founder, General Alfred Beckley, is on the National Register of Historic Places. This log structure has been lovingly restored and filled with period antiques, many owned by the family of General Alfred Beckley. Wildwood House plays a significant part in early Raleigh County history.The museum is open in the summer months for tours, and can also be booked for special tours and occasions in other seasons.
