The objective of this study is to find an optimal allocation of newspaper agents andan optimal routes and schedules for newspaper delivery to minimize delivery cost

while keeping the total delay time of delivery short. A practical approach was usedfor solving the problem using heuristic algorithms and a digital map. The Regret

Distance algorithm, the Modified Saving algorithm, the Weighted Savings algorithm, the Urgent Route First algorithm and the Modified Urgent Route First algorithm were

investigated. As an optimal algorithm, the Regret Distance Calculation algorithm toallocate the agents for each plant, the Weighted Savings algorithm for routing, andthe Modified Urgent Route First algorithm for vehicle scheduling were selected. A

split delivery scheme was also selected. With these selected algorithms and a split

delivery scheme, a method using a computer program was used at newspapercompanies for allocation of demand and vehicle routing and scheduling. This

computer program was used to validate our proposed method at the Chosun Ilbocompany, which is one of the major newspaper company in Korea. It was found that

our method saved the delivery cost by 15% and reduced the delay time by 40% onthe average compared to the current manual method.

KOCHI: The School of Management Studies, Cochin University of Science andTechnology (Cusat), will organise a national seminar on Logistics Management on

March 28 and 29. Top managers and professionals from CIAL, Railways, Cochin PortTrust, DP World and Reliance Retail will discuss logistics issues in their respective

areas. Vice-Chancellor of Cusat Gangan Pratap will inaugurate the seminar.

The performance of a logistic system depends on the effective collaboration andintegrated functioning of many elements and service providers. There is need to

bring the professionals working in different areas of logistics to share theirknowledge. This is one of the areas in which academics have a lot to learn from

    practice.

Logistics management is an interconnecting function that helps move materials fromone department to another or one firm to another in a supply chain. It consists of a

network of storage, handling and transportation systems.

A decade back we would not have expected to see Californian oranges, andAustralian fruits in our supermarket shelves. In international trade, the share oflogistics is around 28 per cent of the final product cost. In large countries like India,

the domestic logistics cost for agricultural products is in the range of 20 to 25 percent of the final cost.

Logistics has long been handled by small and less organised set-ups. Hence its

efficiency has been poor. There is need to improve logistics system performance interms of speed, response time, flexibility, cost and reliability. A lot of attention is

being devoted in recent times to improving logistics system performance, by

improving infrastructure, carriers and collaboration between different agenciesproviding different logistics services.

The School of Management Studies, Cusat, has been involved in teaching andresearch in the area of Logistics Management for over a decade now. Courses on

Logistics are gaining popularity in Management Schools in Kerala.

Development in the area of logistics in Kerala has been tremendous. Projects such as

the Cochin International Airport, Vallarpadom transshipment terminal and LNGproject have changed the level of logistics-related activities in Kerala.

    Newspaper

    Newspaper circulation

    Anewspaper'scirculation

is the number of copies it distributes on anaverageday. Newspaper circulation rates are currentlyexperiencing a downward trend. Circulation isone of the principal factors used to setadvertising rates.

Circulation is not always thesame as copies sold, often calledpaid circulation

, since some newspapers are distributedwithout cost to the reader. Readership figures are usually higher

than circulation figures because of the assumption that a typical copy of the newspaper is read by more than

one person. In many countries, circulations areauditedby independent bodies such as theAudit Bureau of

Circulations to assure advertisers that a given newspaper does indeed reach thenumber of people claimed

    by the publisher

This is a list of the

top 30 newspapers inIndiaby dailycirculation. These figures aremainly compiled by theAudit Bureau of Circulations .Some
