EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

THE NUS MBA | 07

MANAGEMENT COMMUNICATION

An essential component of the programme structure is the Management Communication module. This takes place two weeks prior to the 1st semester and does not count towards your final grade. Think of this course as an undercoat – a preliminary warm-up session that focuses on the most important skill of all – communication.

This compulsory 5-day ‘boot camp’ will set you off in the right direction as you work towards attaining a Master of Business Administration.

• Understand the importance of context, pressure and judgement

• Learn the principles of designing effective influence strategies in a variety of business and leadership situations

• Develop a strong focus on shared outcomes

• Identify your own Management Communication strengths and weaknesses

• Build a positive learning and leadership culture within a team

MANAGEMENT PRACTICUM

This is the NUS flagship programme in experiential learning. In a span of five years since its inception, the Management Practicum programme has offered over 300 projects across 12 different industries with 120 companies in fields such as Fintech, Banking, Consulting, Technology, Hospitality & Tourism, Manufacturing, FMCG and more. It provides hands-on consultancy projects to apply what you have learnt in a real business scenario, where you will work directly with a company to solve current business challenges at the highest level. You will be required to define and solve strategic problems, explore business opportunities, enhance organisational competitiveness, and improve organisational and managerial effectiveness – all within a limited timeframe.

You will be working in teams of 4-5 students alongside company representatives and under the supervision of a faculty. As a team, you will research and analyse issues to produce a comprehensive, in-depth strategic business plan that would incorporate financial, marketing, operational and strategic recommendations. This compulsory programme will earn you 4 modular credits towards your graduation and requires 3-4 months to complete. In the contemporary business world, effective communication across a broad

variety of settings is a common key to success in large multinationals and entrepreneurial start-ups.

Management Skills, conducted throughout the first semester of your enrolment in the programme, is designed to augment communication skills in organisational and corporate settings. It is an extension of the Management Communication module and enables you to improve your:

1. Situational analysis skills through a focus on business case training2. Persuasion skills through a focus on business presentations3. Discussion skills through a focus on extemporaneous speaking4. Presentation and communication skills through digital media

Emphasis is placed on business case analysis, effective presentations, client and project management, handling Q&A and giving effective feedback and appraisals.
