A leading stylist in Northern Ireland, Eve Brannon has a wealth of experience in the industry. Each month she offers a fashion focus into the most coveted designers, trends and styles of the season.

Snug Style

Get cosy-cool this month as faux-furs, chunky knits, fuzzy felts and comfy capes are all the wardrobe essentials you’ll need to embrace true ‘snug style’.

Thanks to the likes of Burburry and Marc Jacobs (to name a few), off-duty comfort dressing is no longer trapped indoors. Statement pieces mean you can wrap up in style and get outdoors to strut your stuff in ultimate chilly-chic. The choices are endless, from blanket capes to teddy coats, from oversized shearling to boxy bombers – take your pick or (if, like us,

you want it all) experiment with layers, layers and more layers.

The sheepskin coat is perhaps the most versatile and coveted coat of the winter season. Model Karlie Kloss kept it casual, layered over jeans and grey marl. While Rihanna showcased Prada’s offering straight off the catwalk.

Fancy standing out from the crowd? Opt for bold a colour pop with the addition of a fuzzy faux-fur or bold beanie, for ultimate impact. As seen at Missoni, Anna Sui and Gucci AW’14 shows.

We’re seriously envious of the Burberry monogrammed personalised blanket-ponchos that are sweeping the celebrity circuit, worn by every ‘it-model’ of the moment!

Finally, for thee ultimate in daddy-cool-comfort throw on an Argyle boyfriend sweater, super-sized jumper dress or your favourite old knobbly knit and don’t be afraid to take your look from sofa to the street!

Just a stone’s throw from the iconic City Hall,  Atelier-Design opened their doors on the evening of Thursday 6th of November and unveiled their unique vision for a new brand of destination shopping in Belfast city centre. 7 Wellington Place is a stunning four story Georgian town-house, which has housed the second-floor Interiors showroom of James Fairley and Victor Branco’s Architecture and Interior Design practice for the last two years.

When the opportunity arose to take over the entire majestic building, the creative duo jumped at the chance, and have spent the last few months designing and

working towards an incredible curation of high end Furniture and Design brands, many of which are not available anywhere else in Ireland. They began their sourcing in Portugal,Victor’s home country, and are bringing over a sumptuous and inspiring collection of hand made furniture and lighting.

Speaking about this exciting

undertaking, Victor said,“We were inspired by some

of our favourite destination shopping environments around the world such as Liberty of London and Merci in Paris! We felt passionately that we could create a small piece of magic for Belfast shoppers to revel in, right in the heart of the city. We are so

So let’s start by telling us a little bit about yourselfI’m a Belfast born singer songwriter born and raised on the Castlereagh road. I went to Downey House, then on to Methody followed by Edinburgh to study for 5 years. I have 4 lads in the band and have just released my new EP called ‘To Be Good Enough’. Other than music I love cooking, playing and watching sport and going to gigs.

For our readers who have never heard your music, explain your sound in 5 wordsEasy listening honest melodic music

How old where you when you first started singing/song writing?I first sang when I was in P7 of primary school. I joined the choir

because I had a fancy for a girl who was in it. The next thing I knew I was singing a solo in the school play! I did bits and bobs when I was at Methody but it wasn’t until going to Uni that I got myself guitar and started writing and performing my own songs.

If I was to turn on your iPod right now what 5 artists/songs would I see on your recently played list?James Bay - If You ever Want To Be In LoveJohn Mayer - AssassinMichael Jackson - Dirty DianaGabrielle Aplin - Keep On WalkingGeorge Ezra - Blame It On Me

You write all your own material, drawing a lot of your inspiration from personal experiences, what is your favourite part of the song writing process?

I think it’s important to be honest when writing songs, otherwise they aren’t going to mean much to me. My favourite part, obvious as it sounds, has to be the finish line. It’s the end of a journey from finding the chords for the verse, pre-chorus, chorus and bridge, to writing to vocal melodies and finally writing the lyrics over the melody. Sometimes songs takes 30 minutes to write, but others take weeks before I’m happy.

Who has been your greatest influencer during your career? My parents have always given me the freedom to pursue music, though did insist I get my degree. I hope I can repay them someday for the support they’ve given me. Lyrically I have been influenced a lot by the relationships that I’ve been in. I would say I’ve experience a fair few emotions which more than often find there way onto paper.

If you could open up for any singer/band on tour right now, who would it be?I’ll answer this giving a dead & alive Alive - I’m going to say James Bay. He is a fairly fresh artist on the scene, but he’s the real deal. His melodies, his lyrics and his performance is something to aspire to. Looking forward to seeing him in Dublin this month.Dead - Michael Jackson. His BAD album is the reason I began to love music. I’d love to understand his genius, his

This month Ulster Life spoke to Belfast based singer and online success, Jason Clark. With his recently released brand new single ‘To Be Good Enough’ and a headline gig set to take place in Belfast on 13 November, Jason Clarke is definitely one artist worth watching. If the thoughts of a glycolic peel bring a crusty, red face and blistering, peeling skin to mind, think again, because local skin care experts at Skinician have developed a fantastic range of home products which deliver amazing results for smooth and younger looking skin.

This month I had a glycolic peel courtesy of local skin care experts Skinician, (the peeps behind the hugely successful He-Shi and TanTastic brands) and all fears I had before trialling the treatment were quickly allayed as I lay down in the beauty room of their R&D  department on the outskirts of Belfast. I was given a salon

standard treatment (and one which is available at spas across Northern Ireland) but the key thing is that these guys (who are local, and everyone wants to support local business, right?) have developed some amazing salon-level products which can be used at home.

I have a few favourite products  - specifically the Advanced Eye Repair and Advanced Time Delay Day Cream, but they work best as part of the overall facial, and my skin felt deliciously refreshed and revitalised afterwards as they were applied.

We kick started the treatment with some pre-facial escapism and

some inhalations with pressure point massage. I choose a relaxing aromatherapy oil to get me all settled and out of ‘wired’ mode. This was followed by an eye and lip cleanse using pressure points around the eye area – the product used soothed and calmed the eye area while gently removing my eye makeup. Then we had a double cleanse with Revitalising Cleanser (includes Chamomile and Green Tea – packed full of Anti Oxidants to fight free radical damage) followed by the application of Glycolic Peel itself. I expected some burning sensation but got just a light-ish tingling.

Spa Sleuth

Page 35: The Nov/Dec Issue2014

33

ULbeauty

While it was working its magic, I enjoyed a scalp massage for between 5-12 minutes which was super relaxing and just what I needed at the end of a busy Friday.

The Glycolic was then neutralised using a neutraliser followed by a Calming Serum to comfort and soothe the skin, reducing any redness resulting from the Glycolic. (I have to say that luckily, I didn’t suffer too much redness but some more sensitive skin types might do).  And if that wasn’t enough I had a hydration mask accompanied by a neck and shoulder massage for 10 minutes while the mask soaked into my pores. The facial

was completed by applying Calming Serum, Advanced Eye Repair and Advanced Time Delay Day Cream – all by Skinician, which is a really fab range of beauty products and one that I am glad to say I support as it was developed in Northern Ireland.

And beause we were in Northern Ireland, I didn’t have to worry about the main precautionary advice with a glycolic, which is the avoidance of sunlight. The other point to note is that no make up or heat treatments should be used within 6-9 hours of the treatment, so end of the working day is usually a good time and that way you can

take an early night and wake up looking fresher and younger.

Personally I felt the benefits straight away – my skin felt more supple and hydrated to the touch, and it looked plump with health and lustre. A glycolic is a great way to shed off dead summer skin cells in preparation for the winter months ahead. And with skinician you can start the benefits at home with some of their new products.

My rate? 8/10. for details on skinician visit www.skinician.com

This year sees the Northern Irish Actor/Singer return to Northern Ireland as he gets ready to take Belfast by storm in his home debut of the hit musical ‘All I want for Christmas’ at the black Box this Christmas. Having performed on some of the biggest stages all over the UK and Ireland, alongside some of the biggest names in showbiz, including; P!NK, Jessie J and NI’s very own Liam Neeson, the local boy cannot wait to perform his favourite Christmas songs on home turf. With what promises to be a fabulous night, audiences can expect an evening of music and stories as Conleth makes his home debut. This month Ulster Life’s Zoe Brennan caught up with the charismatic Conleth to find out a little more…

So Conleth, tell us a little bit about yourself?Well I have just turned 30. That’s a shock to my system - but it’s all good! I’m embracing the start of this new decade.  I am a Northern Irish Actor/Singer/Magazine Columnist and a huge Yoga-lover.  I have lived in London for 10 years and (touch wood) have had a very colourful career in the Arts.  I have been very fortunate to have appeared in some fantastic musicals throughout the UK and appeared on big Television shows, and I have decided to come home this Christmas and appear in a new musical at the Theatre at the Mill called ‘Tinseltown’ then I am hosting my own concert at the Black Box on December 21st.  All very exciting!

Did you always want to be an actor?I am sure when I was about 4 or 5 I wanted to be a train-driver or something along those lines.  I didn’t have the best social life at school, nor did I fit in with many groups of kids, however the the Performing Arts is somewhere I felt very much ‘at home’ and welcomed, and when you couple that with a passion for the craft, I decided that I simply had to work in an industry just like this. I took it very seriously, and from the age of 15 I was already boarding flights to view Drama Schools and applying for the best residential courses that were available.

What route did you go down to pursuit your dream career?Well, I knew that if I wanted to be in Musical Theatre, and gain the best training, there was no option but to go to London.  In 2002 I was the only person from N. Ireland to successfully gain a place in the UK’s leading Youth Musical Theatre Company (NYMT), and I was cast alongside a young girl called Jessica Cornish from Essex (who is now known across the globe as Pop Sensation ‘Jessie J’). Having spent the summer working with the likes of her and 20 other young people, I arrived back in Ireland confirmed to my parents that I had to move to London.  The rest is history.  I auditioned for Arts Ed (past pupils include Julie Andrews and Will Young) and I got a place!  It wasn’t easy.  Drama School was hard.  Very hard.  You

All our furniture is locally sourced, and individually redesigned. Each is a one-off, artisan piece which has been made to last. It is also the only Belfast based stockist of the wonderful Annie Sloan chalk paint which is, in Annie’s own words, “the best paint in the world”.

In addition to selling Annie Sloan products, we offer workshops which give people hands-on experience with the paint and provide ideas for re-crafting their own furniture.

We are also showcasing the work of other local crafts people and artists such as Loveollio candles, personalised cushions, bunting, prints and paintings. These outstanding home accessories perfectly compliment the unique furniture design shown throughout Doris and Jeannie. Mauritius truly is a paradise Island. Located in the Indian Ocean, it really is the perfect choice for your honeymoon or wedding abroad. Think white sandy beaches, crystal blue waters, coral reefs and dramatic mountains, it is truly breath-taking. The climate is virtually all year around and has the friendliest people of all the places I have been to, going the extra mile to make your trip special.

Chaka TravelMauritius is around an 11.5

hours flight from Belfast or Dublin, offered by Emirates, Air Mauritius and British Airways. It is a stunning destination either on its own and also twinned with Dubai, South Africa or Seychelles. There are a range of properties on the island; whether you want 3* or 5*, your own private pool or a hotel closer to a town with a little more activity.

This fabulous destination

has the advantage of many luxurious hotels who want to wow you with their service and make your trip special. They offer fantastic discounts for honeymooners and various little treats from romantic dinners to spa treatments complimentary.

Mauritian cuisines is as diverse as its culture with dishes of Indian, Chinese, Creole and European origin. The fresh produce and seafood is also delicious,

something for every palate. You may choose to spend

your trip enjoying the weather, spa treatments and amazing dishes your resort offers but there are options if you would like a little more activity. Some of the things to do include playing golf, with some hotels offering complimentary green fees, deep sea fishing or taking

one of the many wonderful trips the island has to offer.

Some of my favourite things to do include visiting Tamarin Bay. A group of wild dolphins have chosen Tamarin Bay on the west coast as their natural habitat. They can often be seen in the morning and in the late afternoons. Dolphin watching can be done either on deluxe

Catamarans with other people of you can hire a speedboat with experienced crew which allows a closer approach to the dolphins. Combine time with the dolphins with snorkelling in some amazing places and having lunch on a deserted island.

Casela Nature reserve is a must see also. Set in a magnificent site between

Bambous and Tamarin in the Rivière Noire district, the Casela Park hosts some 140 varieties of birds from around the world. The main attraction remains the Mauritian Pink Pigeon, one of the rarest birds in the world, still fighting to avoid the fate of the Dodo, which was native to Mauritius. Casela is home to some giant tortoises,

one of which is 150 years old! As well as quad biking, zip lining and sedge way, walking with lions is an experience to never to be forgotten!

Once you visit Mauritius you will discover the meaning of true beauty, having an unforgettable holiday to a destination you will want to return to again and again!

It’s hard to believe the Belfast Christmas Market has been taking place at City Hall for 10 years. What started as a small group of gazebos and a handful of traders has grown into one of our best-loved festive events.

Nowadays the grounds of City Hall are transformed into a traditional festive German style market complete with 90 hand crafted wooden chalets and other structures, twinkling lights and the aroma of the traditional spirit-warming Glühwein.

This year the multi-award winning Belfast Christmas Market which generates

millions of pounds in economic benefits for the City of Belfast each year opens its gates on Saturday 15 November at 12noon, signalling for many the start of the Christmas season in Belfast City Centre.

Over 800,000 visitors are expected to enjoy the gastronomic delights at this year’s market which include: Crepes from France, Belgian chocolates and an exotic selection of ostrich, wild boar and crocodile burgers for those with a taste for adventure. Giant Bratwurst are cooked and sold from a brand new iconic

Schwenkgrille, Spanish Paella, and nougat from Italy is also on offer for hungry festive shoppers.

Close to 30% of the market is made up of local traders (many who started at the award winning St George’s Market) selling products such as non alcoholic cordials, hand carved name plaques, locally produced chocolate and original art. Ranfurly House Arts and Visitor Centre is the perfect starting point for an exploration of the Dungannon and Tyrone area. It is located in the former Belfast Bank, a beautiful mid Victorian centrepiece at the heart of Dungannon town. It also sits beneath one of Ireland and Europe’s most important heritage sites - HILL of THE O’NEILL.

From here the famous O’Neill dynasty utilized a stunning 360-degree view of the province of Ulster to rule Gaelic Ireland for over 300 years. The centre contains a multi-media exhibition narrating the Hill’s importance in Irish and European history,

its links to the O’Neill’s and the subsequent Flight of the Earls and Plantation of Ulster. The Centre was officially opened in October 2012 and has become a very popular Visitor Attraction, arts centre and performance area in the town of Dungannon.

Visitors are welcome to come and spend time with us on the Historic Hill of THE O’NEILL, a site used by rulers, noblemen and armies as a stronghold to dominate the area, a place from which they could influence all of Ulster. At least two castles are thought to have been built on the site, as well as a grand manor house and a fortified

town. Discover how Dungannon was once at the centre of world affairs. Learn more about the history of the O’Neill’s, the Flight of the Earls and the Plantation of Ulster in our Permanent exhibition area located on the first floor of the centre.
