Welcome to the 2017 York International Women’s Festival!

Celebrations in York for International Women’s Day have gone from strength to strength over the years, so much so that we now have a two week Festival packed with talks, workshops, gigs and performances all intending to empower, inform and celebrate Women.

The notion of a Women’s Day was introduced by Clara Zetkin at the 1910 International Conference of Working Women. She proposed a day of celebration and action for women to press for changes in working conditions, equal pay and voting rights.

Over 100 years later we are still loudly voicing these same concerns. Garment factory fires in Pakistan and Bangladesh have highlighted the appalling working conditions of female workers, whilst here in the UK the 14.2% pay gap means women in full time work are effectively working for free from early November till the end of the year.

We hope you enjoy our Festival. Sign up for events, listen to talks, dance at gigs - get involved as much as you can! And please, above all, keep on celebrating your worth and demanding your rights.

With Love and Hope for Women and Girls everywhere, Joe, Rose, Sally, Judy, Louise, Carol, Elle & Tanya The YIWF Committee
