This year due to so many

offices working with few-

er personnel and the col-

lege providing extra pro-

fessional development

seminars throughout the

year, Dr. Hellyer, Chan-

cellor, asked that we

change the format of our

Half-Day Seminar to a

regular meeting. This

change allows us to meet

as usual with a profes-

sional development

speaker. The silent auc-

tion will be changed as

well, possibly as a raffle

this year.

Since the silent auction

proceeds benefit AEOP’s

community service recipi-

ent, we will continue to

serve our project through

other fundraising in order

to provide assistance.

Look for fundraising op-

portunities soon!

Coushatta Casino Fundraiser II by Sherry Gray

TESA Summer Work Conference 2012 in San Antonio

We had such a great success

and so much fun on the first

trip in October, many people

asked we go again!

So on March 31st, AEOP and

TESA family and friends set

out for another fun trip to

Coushatta.

Everyone got on the bus bright

and cheery at 7:00 a.m. Satur-

day morning ready to hit those

big jackpots!

Upon arrival at the casino at

11:00 a.m., everyone hit the

casino floor with winning atti-

tudes.

It’s a large casino, yet small

enough you’d think you would

run into someone you came

with!! However, that doesn’t

happen often. Once you find

an area you feel good with (i.e.

winning!), you don’t move

much.

Hey, where did the day go?

It’s 3:45 already and time to get

back on the bus home. As

everyone is boarding, you get

all the happy faces from every-

one enjoying a wonderful time!

They are telling their winning

stories and boy is it fun!! We

had winners up to $900!!

WOW, that is fun!!

Everyone is so excited for

those who won and already

talking about next time!!

All in all, the whole trip was

great and AEOP raised $760

for our fundraiser!!

San Jacinto College AEOP History By Barbara Jennings, Debbie Wade and Sherry Gray

The San Jacinto College As-

sociation of Educational Of-

fice Personnel (SJC AEOP)

began in 1982 with a handful

of dedicated secretaries who

were interested in forming a

group to meet and share ideas

and to better themselves in the

workplace. Those charter

members became the back-

bone of an organization that

would weather ups and downs

in membership, successes and

failures in ways and means

ventures, special projects, and

programs, fluctuating meeting

times and budgets, and yearly

changes in leadership during

its 30-year existence. Ironical-

ly, the success of this organi-

zation, which is affiliated with

the Texas Educational Sup-

port Staff Association

(TESA), can also be credited

to the struggles it has en-

dured.

Throughout the years, mem-

bership in SJC AEOP has

changed as rapidly as the Tex-

as weather because of shifts in

employment and interest lev-

els. Beginning with merely 14

members, the membership has

peaked at 85 members. Each

member has contributed her

time and talents in numerous

ways to make the organiza-

tion stronger not only locally

but statewide and nationwide.

SJC AEOP members have

tackled a variety of ways and

means to ventures during its

history some being repeated

and some being for one time

only! Three editions of the

successful SJC AEOP cook-

book have been printed and

sold. Pecans will forever be

embedded in our taste buds!

The old timers will fondly

remember the early days of

garage sales and bake sales to

raise funds for scholarships

and to keep our budget in the

black. Larger membership

and more needs of the organi-

zation have guided the budget

to a steady increase. SJC stu-

dents and AEOP members

have ultimately become bene-

factors of the increased schol-

arships given yearly. Several

local organizations and indi-

viduals have also been recipi-

ents of our members’ gener-

osity through our community

service program.

SJC AEOP has been fortunate

to have its share of recogni-

tion in recent years including

seven first place, three second

place, and three third place

state awards for our newslet-

ter, The Notepad. The year-

book has also garroted seven

first place, two second place

and one third place awards in

the TESA competition.

We have also had six winning

entries for the TESA Spirit

Award and eight awards for

our table decorations at the

TESA Summer Work Confer-

ence. SJC AEOP can also

brag on several of its mem-

bers serving on the executive

board for TESA and as TESA

president. One member has

also served two terms as

TESA’s First Vice President

and editor of The Texas Con-

nection, which has won sever-

al first place Rachel Maynard

Award for Excellence in com-

munication given by the Na-

tional Association of Educa-

tional Office Professionals.

Two other SJC AEOP mem-

bers served as assistant edi-

tors for this publication. Sev-

eral other members have

served on the TESA board in

a variety of offices and com-

mittees. Another SJC AEOP

member was honored with

TESA’s Nelda Van Dyke

Award Employee of The Year

Award. Success has been tast-

ed by several of our members

who have completed their

Certified Educational Office

Professional (CEOP) certifi-

cation through TESA. Many

others continue to work to-

ward that certification through

the TESA Staff Training for

Effective management

(STEM) program.

Programs for the monthly SJC

AEOP meetings have been as

diverse as our membership

through the years. Program

topics have included office

organization, proofreading,

professional dress, grief,

stress management, team-

work, communication, com-

munity outreach, legislative

issues, the judicial system,

customer service, diversity,

and pet therapy. Through trial

and error, a number of differ-

ent meetings days, times and

location have been tried.

These have included evenings

and lunchtime, on campus

and at local restaurants, and

virtually every day of the

week. Our current meeting

arrangements are on the third

Thursday of each month at

one of the campuses or dis-

trict (with travel time ap-

proved for which we thank

our District administration).

Twenty two presidents have

served SJC AEOP since its

humble beginnings with each

president bringing her own

unique style of leadership,

experiences and important

issues to conquer. Eight of

these presidents proudly

served for more than one

term. Many other members

have served in equally im-

portant roles as members of

the executive board, commit-

tee chairs, and members of a

host of committees all of

which work together to make

SJC AEOP a success.

Though constantly changing

leadership of these dedicated

members, SJC AEOP has

thrived. Collectively, our

members and our organiza-

tion have become stronger,

larger in number and ready

for the changes that we face.

AEOP members got together

one Saturday morning at the

Central Campus to make spirit

shirts for the upcoming TESA

Summer Work Conference in

June. Also present were Patti

Walling and Sherry Gray.

WOW! What a great TESA Summer Work Conference!

San Jacinto College AEOP, Association of Educational Office Per-

sonnel had 13 members attend this year. Paula Quiroz, Sandra Cur-

ry, Bea Rodriguez, Linda Navejar, Donna Cubstead, Sherry Gray,

Mary Tunstall, Patti Walling, Janna Barton, Donna Traylor, Nancy

McShane, Debbie Wade, and Barbara Jennings.

This was an exciting trip for SJC AEOP, San Jac came home with

many, many great accomplishments!

Paula Quiroz graduated receiving her CEOP. Her daughter, sister and nieces were there to cheer

for her as well. Way to go Paula! Patti Walling was elected to the TESA Executive Board, Presi-

dent-Elect 2012-2013. Congratulations Patti! Sherry Gray was appointed to the Awards, Scholar-

ships and Journalism committee and Sandra Curry was appointed to the STEM committee. That’s

a great job ladies. But wait that’s not all! Donna Cubstead, Linda Navejar and Mary Tunstall all

first timers to TESA conference! And they won ―Most unique‖ table decoration at the banquet/

officer installation! That’s the way to show them first timers!! Sherry Gray won 2nd place for our

newsletter, The Notepad, and 3rd place for The Yearbook. All the members attended many excit-

ing classes, breakout sessions and keynote events. Bea Rodriguez, Linda Navejar, Donna Cub-

stead, Mary Tunstall, Janna Barton and Donna Traylor all attended STEM classes working towards

their CEOP. Nancy McShane, SJC retiree/part-time employee, attended as a registered attendee to

the newly formed ―TESA Retiree Mini Retreat‖ enjoying sessions along with other retirees, catch-

ing up with friends as well as regular members. Sherry Gray and Patti Walling attended STEM clas-

ses, breakout sessions, and business meetings and worked in many areas to assist in making the

conference successful. Oh and of course Debbie Wade, retired member of SJC, was the Summer

Conference Chair, no wonder we were all so busy this year. We loved it Debbie. And of course,

Debbie Wade and Barbara Jennings, also retired from SJC, taught STEM classes and presented

breakout sessions for the entire conference. Whew! That was some participation AEOP ladies. We

also had a ―tag-a-long guest‖; Sherry’s granddaughter Alexis attended a few of the functions. She

had the time of her life. Thanks so much to all my AEOP and TESA friends for showing her a

good time. She especially liked the banquet and dancing. Her favorite things…food and dancing.

She was so excited; she said ―I learned the Two-Step and the Cotton Eyed Joe‖!

Now that’s not the end, oh no way!! Remember Patti was elected President-Elect!! Keep your hats

on ladies because she will be needing us at the next summer conference to support her as she is

installed as the 60th TESA President, 2013-2014!! We are at your service Patti!

The Annual SJC AEOP Boss-

es’ Appreciation Luncheon

was a huge success again! It

is one of our largest and favor-

ite functions of the year, and

there were close to 127 at-

tendees. Dr. Laurel V. Wil-

liamson, SJC Vice Chancellor

for Learning and Student Suc-

cess and Interim President for

both Central and South Cam-

puses engaged us with her

“Let’s Get Moving” keynote

address. Dr. Williamson also

is an AEOP Advisory Board

member and hardly ever miss-

es our monthly meetings. She

encouraged staff members to

join the AEOP group and en-

couraged the bosses to allow

them to do so and attend func-

tions.

The highlight of the luncheon

was the awarding of the pres-

tigious 2012-2013 Boss of the

Year! The winner was Ms.

Serita Dickey, Dean of Natural

Science/Allied Health/SACS

Compliance at SJC North

Campus. Some words taken

from the nomination form sent

in by Sandra Curry: “She has

been employed by the college

for thirty years, and she is a

boss who always looks be-

yond what is in front of her.

Her door is always open to not

only those who work for her,

but to all in need of a wise

word or two. One of her pas-

sions is to help people grow.

She encourages her adminis-

trative assistants to take clas-

ses, go to conferences and

workshops to broaden our

horizons. She has a tremen-

dous dedication to people and

conviction that everyone mat-

ters.” Congratulations, Ms.

Dickey!

Sherry Gray, AEOP Historian,

announced that this year is

our organization’s 30-year

anniversary. She provided a

wonderful, brief history includ-

ing the founding members

Debbie Wade and Barbara

Jennings who were both pre-

sent. Sherry had a whole table

full of award-winning publica-

tions, yearbooks, etc. that

AEOP has won over the

years.

SJC AEOP raised monies

during the luncheon for our

community service project for

this year which is for Michael

Knighton, a 62-year old man

in desperate need of help with

medical bills and utility bills.

He worked for La Porte ISD as

a sub-custodian until he had a

heart attack in May 2012.

Now he cannot work at all,

does not have any medical

insurance, and has no in-

come. We are happy to help

him out.

Hello from Texas!

I would like to brag just a little bit about our great local affiliate organization in Pasadena, Texas. The San Jacinto College Association of Educational Office Personnel held the last meeting of the 2011-2012 year on May 17, 2012 in the Central Campus library. We were happy to present four student scholarships from funds raised by SJC AEOP members. The winners were, from North Campus, Amber Zeno, a Teaching and Child Development student; from South Campus, Lori Wil-son, an Education student; from Central Campus, Clerissa Hadley, a Biotechnology student; and from Central Campus, Andrea Buren, an education student.

Jennifer Dowling, our community service recipient, a Central Campus student who graduates May 2012, was also present and received a check for $500 from our organization’s fund raising efforts spearheaded by Sherry Gray. Sherry was presented the “Outstanding Member of the Year” award for her awesome fundraising efforts and for having served on several committees including Editor of both our newsletter, “The Notepad” and our AEOP Yearbook. Way to go, Sherry.

Dr. Laurel Williamson, San Jacinto College Vice Chancellor of Learning & Student Success and AEOP Advisory Board Member, presided over the new officer’s installation. She began with honor-ing the Past Presidents of our organization and then swore in the 2012- 2013 officers. Congratula-tions to: (see picture from right to left): 1

SPECIAL 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION Page 15 THE NOTEPAD

This was my first time to attend the TESA Summer Work Con-ference and I found the conference to be very valuable to all support staff who work in the State of Texas. The conference theme last year sup-ported San Jacinto College’s focus on Di-versity. I attended eight sessions during this conference: ―Effective Office Practices‖ (all-day ses-sion) by Barbara Jen-nings, ―Records Re-tention – What Every School Employee Should Know‖ and ―Managing Activity Accounts: 10 Things You Should Know‖ both by Becky Estra-da, the ―General Ses-sion‖ meeting where the keynote speaker Allie Faye Matthews spoke on diversity, ―True Success‖ by Al-lie Faye Matthews, ―Call the Fashion Po-lice 911‖ by Dianne Lemons, ―Cardio Line

Dancing‖ by Cindy Freeland, and finally the ―Catch the Wave Good-bye Brunch‖ where the keynote speaker again rein-forced diversity in the workplace, how things are perceived and in-terpreted based on life experiences, and how we all need to adapt to change if we want to achieve our work-place goals. The Diversity presen-tation and the keynote address at the general session were present-ed by Allie Faye Mat-thews, NAEOP 2011-2012 President. Her definition of diversity was: inclusion of things, places, people, etc.; equality for all people; accept people for content of their character. She led an exercise where she had us divide into groups of two people (who knew one an-other), then she had us write

down four things to describe the other person without using skin color, hair color, eye color, and what they were wearing in the descriptions. Next she had us share what was written with the other person and ask if the descriptions were valid or not. This exercise was to point out that once you remove the out-side appearances, one has to focus on the character of the indi-vidual to make a conclusion about the person. She also made mention of a speech on diversity by Carol Moseley Braun, a short story called ―Work of Our Souls‖ by Joseph Mezella , and referenced the diverse social status in the movie ―Titanic‖. I especially enjoyed Becky Estrada’s presentation on rec-ord retention and ac-

tivities codes. She works for www.lacklandisd.net and I was very im-pressed with her school forms on the internet. She shared knowledge based on the State of Texas record retention laws and about reconciling receipts. She discussed profit and loss forms, how emails become a part of public record, and what state audi-tors are looking for when they come to see your receipts. I would love for her to come do a profession-al development work-shop for San Jacinto College. She was an excellent presenter who taught state law in a way anyone could understand it. Benefits to San Jacin-to College Staff: Diversity education helps us all to better

understand colleagues and students. It helps us to take our focus off our differences and to focus on our goals, which is work-ing as a team to achieve departmental success and assist stu-dents in reaching their educational goals. The record retention and activity account sessions gave me re-sources that I can im-plement in our de-partment so that we can track purchases better and store rec-ords efficiently, and it also gave me a better understanding of Tex-as state law. The effective office practices workshop gave me ideas to im-plement within our department, such as creating a manual in case a temp every had to do my job, organiz-ing files, increasing

vocabulary by learning new words daily, and organizing 12 things a day at your desk to remove clutter.
