Take It From A Pro: Its Possible To Be Activ

And Stay Healthy With DiabetesARA) - Its true for everyone - regular exercise is one of

he keys to good health. It makes you feel energized, eas-

s stress, promotes weight loss and offers a slew of other

benets. For professional athletes, intense physical activity

s a way of life. However, to reap the many rewards theirctive careers offer, they must contend with a constantly

hanging, busy schedule, non-stop travel and the pressure

    of competition.

    These challenges are am-

    plied for athletes with

    diabetes because despite

    he amount of activity and

    unpredictability their lives

    may include, taking a break

    rom regular insulin deliv-

    ry and counting carbohy-

    drates at every meal isnt

    possible. The consequences

of a low or high blood glu-

    ose level can range from

    poor performance to a hos-

    pital visit. Luckily, recent

    dvancements in diabetes

    management technology

have made it much easier tobe on the go with diabetes.

    LPGA hopeful Carling

    Cofng, 24, was diagnosed

with type 1 diabetes as the

ge of ve, the same year

    he discovered she wanted

    o become a professional

    golfer. She decided early on

    hat diabetes would never

imit her life, and because ofhat and good glucose con-

    rol, she has achieved her

    ultimate dream.

Being a professional golfer with diabetes isnt always

asy, but Ive had a lot of help from using an insulin pump

o manage my diabetes, says Cofng. I used to take up

o four shots of insulin a day, which wasnt an easy thing

o do, especially during tournaments. The system I use now

delivers the insulin I need 24 hours a day. It integrates

tinuous glucose monitoring which gives me the head

when I am on my way to having low or high blood suga

I can treat ahead of time.

A person with type 1 diabetes has a pancreas that doe

function normally, making her or him insulin dependen

    life. Keeping glucose le

    in normal range can gre

    reduce the risk of he

    complications for pe

    with diabetes, such as h

    disease, stroke and bl

    ness.

    Cofng, just like thousa

Cofng offers the following four tips to anyone with di

tes who is committed to staying active and healthy:

    * Create an exercise schedule. Every Sunday night, de

when youre going to catch the early aerobics class be

exercising at least three times a week possible. Even if she

has an early tee time and cant hit the gym in the morning,

Cofng still makes sure to do lunges in the evening while

    watching her favorite show.

    * Research before meals. Cofng travels eight months out

of the year, so eating out is a big part of her life, and it

ikely is a part of yours, too. Counting carbohydrates at res-

aurants can be difcult, so prior to dining, take the time to

ook up nutritional information online. The good news ishealthy options are almost always available. Also, consider

looking into using a mobile phone application desig

to help calculate the carbohydrate content in foods, wh

could be a great tool when youre on the go.

    * Keep glucose meters on hand. Having a meter nearb

all times makes it easy to stay in your target glucose ra

because you can check your level regularly throughou

day. Cofng always makes sure to keep a glucose mete

her car, on her nightstand and in her golf bag.

    * Stay positive. Every morning, say out loud that you

Discover The Health Benets Of Massage TherapARA) - The benets of touch have long been associ-

ated with relaxation and a sense of well being. Increas-

ng numbers of people are seeking massage as a way to

elax. Forty percent of women and 29 percent of men

eported having a massage in the past ve years, ac-

cording to a 2010 Massage Therapy Industry Fact Sheet

compiled by the American Massage Therapy Associa-ion (AMTA), in July of 2009.

Health care providers and hospitals, too, are embracing

massage therapy with growing appreciation for its effec-

iveness in helping patients. The AMTAs 2010 Industry

Fact Sheet shows that 76 percent of massage therapists

eceived referrals from health care professionals, up

from 69 percent in 2008. Why? An increasing number

of studies indicate that massage therapy produces ben-

ecial results in relieving pain, lowering blood pressure,

and improving circulation, among other benets.

Massage therapy has moved mainstream, but its rooted

n medicine, says Susan Zolvinski, allied health chair-

person at Brown Mackie College - Michigan City. I

earned the basics of massage therapy in nursing school

30 years ago. A simple back rub can reduce the heart

ate, lower blood pressure and de-stress a patient. Its a

good complement to the wonderful treatments we have.

Today, the eld has expanded dramatically, with m

    different sub-specialties

within the more than 300 different types of mass

At rst, it was general physicians giving referr

then chiropractors and physical therapists recogn

the benets. Now massage therapy is integrated

many different treatment plans, says Melissa DeFcesco, program director for health and therapeutic m

sage therapy at Brown Mackie College - South Be

Nearly every age group is represented in the use of m

sage therapy. It is used in treating the elderly, athl

and people with specic diseases like cancer or mu

lar dystrophy, infants, and individuals who suffer f

    chronic pain.

Even with the buzz generated by this up-and-com

profession, many people dont realize just what m

sage therapy entails. We work with muscles, tendligaments that attach to muscles, and fascia or conn

tive tissue and the lymphatic system, which serve

the bodys sewage and waste disposal system, says

    Francesco,

A lot of science goes into it, says Zolvinski.

beauty of it is combining art with science. We t

apply the different massage therapy modalities to cr

a specic plan to help each individual. Every massag

The rise of massage therapy diploma programs is de-

and the use of complementary aids such as heat and ice.

Small Businesses Find Big Savings In Online Service

(ARA) - Entrepreneurs are the most progressive people out

SurePayroll introduced the countrys rst full-service on-

ine payroll company in 2000. They help small business

owners save time and money by providing a fast and easy

way to process payroll. President and CEO Michael Alter

ays his company has experienced tremendous growth in

his down economy because business owners look for ways

o save money now more than ever.

Cost is on the minds of every business owner today,

he says. When businesses see that they can save nearly$1,000 a year by switching from a traditional ofine pay-

oll provider to us and get all of the same services, its a

    no-brainer.

Making the switch to a dozen or so online business services

ould free up thousands of dollars a year for small business

    owners.

Randy Knapp, a partner at the technology consulting rm

Breakthrough Technologies in Evanston, Ill., chooses on-

ine services whenever he has the opportunity.

I run payroll from the ofce, from home or even on the

oad with SurePayroll. It saves me a lot of time and money.

Employees can access payroll information on their com-

puters or iPhones, which saves on HR costs, he says. Its

one of many online services we use to run the ofce in the

most efcient and cost-effective manner. Id estimate that

we save near the ve-digit mark every year just by choos-

    ng online services.

Hundreds of online services help business owners run their

ofces while cutting expenses. Want to say goodbye to pa-

per costs? Use a system like PerfectForms to create and

manage a variety of types of business forms. Not interested

n footing the bill for stamps? Companies like FreshBooks

will help you track time and invoice clients online. Inter-

ested in cutting the phone bill? Check out one of the V

services like Skype. Dont have the funds to make it

    meeting? Use GoToMeeeting.com.

Before deciding to go with an online company with

given service, business owners need to do their homewo

    * Compare equal features when shopping. Most online

vices offer price quotes online that can be obtained in s

onds, but when comparing prices make sure youre coparing equal features among providers.

    * Make sure the service is truly online. Some compan

claim to be online but really only offer certain compon

of their services online. Often, these services dont o

the benets of exibility and control, and normally d

result in signicant cost savings or higher efciency.

    * Ensure they offer phone support. While many will ne

use it, business owners should ensure that they can re

someone by phone for support issues if they ever need

The bottom line is that business owners go into busin

for themselves so they can have more control. They w

more control of their time and money, and the right on

    services will offer that.

Online services should take the brunt of the work

the business owners shoulders while letting them be

charge, says Alter. Most of our customers didnt go

business to spend their days guring out payroll tax ruand regulations or submitting quarterly tax lings - so

do that for them. But they also dont want us dictat

when and where they run payroll. The beauty of our on

service is that they have the freedom and control to proc

on their schedule without all the associated hassles.
