The North Jersey

Orchid Society NEWSLETTER — MAY 2015

The Official Publication of the North Jersey Orchid Society

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Hi Everyone,

Happy Spring! It looks like we will soon be able to bring

our plants outside for their summer vacation. We had a

good time last month at our ‘Swap Meet’, a lot of greeting,

and chatting with old friends and new ones. I hope you

took home some good plants and orchid ‘stuff’. Our Plant

Table looked phenomenal with 32 plants in the greenhouse

division alone. Can the windowsill growers do as well?

Let’s have a competition this month. Bring your blooming

plants to the meeting and show them to your friends.

Our very interesting speaker this month will be Alfredo

Manrique, who grows orchids in Peru. He has come to the

US for an extended speaking tour. We are expecting a

huge turnout to our May meeting. To ensure there are

enough seats for everyone, please let us know if you are

bringing a guest. In addition, we also ask non-members to

register in advance. Please call or email Anita Gibaldi no

later than May 12 to register. ([email protected])

For those members who are currently receiving printed

newsletters by mail, beginning in July we will be adding

$10 to your annual membership fee if you wish to continue

to receive newsletters by postal mail. We strongly encour-

age you to switch to email delivery. (Members receiving

newsletters via email are not affected).

The Board has nominated Ty Triplett as an additional trus-

tee. Ty is a student judge in the AOS judging program and

is graduating from Rutgers University this year with a mas-

ter's degree and beginning his career in landscape design.

Ty has also been active in the Philadelphia Flower Show

committee. Welcome to the Board, Ty!

Elections will be held at the June meeting. The slate of can-

didates are Trudy, Raymond and Russ as trustees and San-

dra as membership chairperson. According to the by-

laws, nominations may be made from the floor at the May

meeting by a regular member duly seconded by another

regular member. All members must have signified their

willingness to serve before their names are presented either

by the committee or from the floor.

Feel free to bring plants for discussion, whether they be for

diagnosis or something new or unusual.

Happy growing,

Richard

AT OUR NEXT MEETING ON THURSDAY,

MAY 14TH

COME AND MEET

ALFREDO MANRIQUE

In 1972 Alfredo started his nursery business in Lima, Peru. He

mainly focused on Conifers, Azaleas, and Begonias. ( Orchids

came long after)

Early in the 1990´s, He discovered the high potential of orchid

business and the great interest for Peruvian exotic species.

He then switched and

made his nursery to be

90% dedicated to culti-

vation of orchids.

In 2002, after the dis-

covery of the Phrag-

mipedium Kovachii or-

chid; CJM was the first

company to obtain a

permit issued by the Pe-

ruvian Government to collect 5 plants of this same species.

Together with the help of Glen Decker , Fritz Schomburg and

Peter Croezen, the cultivation , propagation and hybridization

of this new species was done with excellent results.

Manrique's nursery has continued to work on different species

and hybrids of orchids:

In 1995 he opened his own in vitro laboratory, working mainly

in finding new ways to speed up the growing of the in vitro

seedlings.

Alfredo attends different orchid shows and gives lectures on

Peruvian orchids species internationally but mainly the US.

Since 1994 Alfredo has been a member of the Peruvian Orchid

Society and was its President from 2001- 2004. He is also a

member of the American Orchid Society.

Coincidently, he still has the first orchid that entered his col-

lection of ornamental plants, in the 1980´s, a Cattleya maxima.

He waited 6 years for this orchid to bloom after finding out

that the plant was in the need of higher light to grow and flow-

er.

Members are encouraged to bring in their

plants for diagnosis by our expert growers. If

you have a plant that is not doing well and

you don’t know why, please bring it to one

our meetings. It will be an educational op-

portunity for all of us. Or, if you have some-

thing unusual about your plant and would

like to show it, bring it in! We’d love to see it.

In the April Newsletter, Richard suggested that members might want to share photos of orchid observations from their travels in future Newsletters. On our Feb. 2015 trip to the Gamboa area of the Panama canal zone, we observed the following two orchids blooming in the wild. While we have seen Vanilla vines in situ on previous occasions, this was the first time we saw one in bloom. The Notylia was also a treat. Mike and Helen Oien
