THE NOMADS CREED

“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;

Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; And therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

It tolls for thee.”

from the Meditations of John Donne (1573-1631)

Dear fellow Nomads, generous Sponsors and all Readers It was 07:00am on a crisp, sunny Sunday morning when we set out to enjoy “The Ultimate Bushveld Golfing Experience” at Mbombela Golf Club. Thank you, Darren Plumb, General Manager for the friendly and professional reception, great catering and thanks to your Greenkeeping Staff for the excellent course conditions! The late summer rain has brought with it lush green pastures and beautiful fairways as well as very tall grass where some of us really struggled to find our golf balls. Our four-ball, along with several other Lowveld Nomad members, played the first round of our 2020 Gary Player Knockout during the Monthly game. It’s a great format where you can pick a partner for the year, and I am honoured to play in the Douglass Duo, Farther-and-Son team. Thanks, Daddy, for a great day out, even though we weren’t spared the dreaded Bunny-ears – or shall I say thanks to Garth and Kevin for the case of Castle Lite’s? As mentioned last month, we paid tribute to our many local sponsors and I would like to thank our Public Relations Officer, Jason Davis for arranging a casual get together. As mentioned to our loyal sponsors, the Lowveld Nomads are privileged to partner with 36 local Companies, who combined sponsor money, vouchers, prizes or corporate gifts in excess of R40,000 each month. It also includes sponsorships towards the running of the Club, such as Insurance for the equipment, printing of scorecards, data for connectivity at monthly games, to name a few. We are grateful and blessed to have you on board and this Newsletter is one of our many ways where we pay tribute to and thank our generous Sponsors. In less than a week, 18 Lowvelders are making their way to the Twenty20 Buffalo National Tournament, hosted by the Border Nomads Club at East London Golf Club. This National event sees no less than 160 golfers from our 12 South African and 7 International Nomads Clubs from Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, competing for the elusive Bert Hunt Trophy. I would like to wish our team good luck and may the best team win! As we are playing our third 2020 Monthly game on Sunday, 1st March, time is quickly running out on my Captaincy year and before our April edition, our Annual General Meeting would have come and gone. Until then, take it easy and stay safe! Arthur Douglass Captain “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them” - Walt Disney

The Bookies Report on the FEBRUARY game at MBOMBELA

After the loss made at Sabie last month the Bookie bounced back with a successful day at Mbombela. Bets placed amounted to R1250 and only 1 winning bet of R250 was paid so the profit was R1000 for the day. Most bets placed are on the Matchbox winner and Bunny Ears winners – Lowveld Nomads are a tough bunch. Profits for 2020 transferred to AMF stand at R1880 and the total amount transferred to AMF from the Bookie since January 2019 now amount to R8830.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Please continue to support this initiative as it is a fun way of raising money for AMF and you can also walk away with a nice sum of money if you get lucky.

Good News ! These new jackets have arrived - for those who have already placed their order, and there is very limited stock still available - only 1 or 2 in each size

THE CHANGE-R M

Month two of the year done and dusted and in my case still very few pars to show for my efforts. I know I crack on about it as often as anyone will listen but in about 75 games I have yet to get a matchbox. The amount of times that I have scraped through and missed it by a point or two has been far more frequent than I would have liked. I am probably tempting fate now but here’s to another 75 games without one. Mind you the way I am playing it’s my only route into the gold cup so it may be a good thing to get the monkey off my back. In the mean time you can all bet on me, I will miss it by one or two shots and the bookie can cash in. A big shout-out to Manager Darren Plumb and his team for hosting us as well as they did - it’s always a pleasure to play at Mbombela Golf Course. The one thing that was very strange was the new “no- preferred lie” or placing rule. With the new World Handicap system I think they are trying to get uniformity world-wide and this is part of it. It is the rub of the green and so it’s the same for everybody but getting a poor lie on a fairway or landing in someone’s unrepaired divot seems a bit harsh at first but I don’t think that it will take much time for it not to be an issue. I read an article about cheats the other day and they actually demonstrated how a golfer actually uses a tee on the fairway and with sleight of hand he manages to get a tee into the ground and play the ball. I guess if you are going to cheat in a game of honour and integrity, no new rule is going to stop you. We had a committee meeting after the last game and as part of the discussions what we have termed as a succession plan once again came up and was spoken about. I know that I have written about this in the past but if I could just say a little bit about it. The average age in the Lowveld is 53, which means that we are not exactly on our death beds but we need younger, strong committed members to put their hands up as future leaders of our wonderful club to keep it going and to make sure that there is a strong well-run club going forward. So if you as a younger member feel that you would like to get more involved please don’t hesitate to do so. Being on the committee does not take up a lot of your time and you will be amazed at the structures, thought and efforts being put in to make us what we are today as an organization. We

still have three founder members serving on the committee so do as Nike says … “just do it” A man and his wife go golfing and he has had an almost perfect round until they get to the 18th where he slices his drive way right to behind a barn that was on the course. He was as mad as hell thinking that his was now going to ruin his score until his wife suggested that she hold the barn doors open and he hits it straight through. With his wife holding the doors open the husband smashes the ball, only to hit his wife in the head which kills her instantly. After a few months and the appropriate time of mourning the husband was back on the golf course and as luck would have it he sliced his drive on the 18th to a very similar position to where he was last time he played. After not seeing their friend enjoy himself for so long his partners wanted to keep him happy so one of them suggested that he open the barn doors and that he play his ball through the barn. To which he replied “no thanks last time I tried that I got a double bogey” Keep swinging, and see you at Kruger Park Lodge THE CHANGEROOM CHATTERBOX
