Opening Sentence When they got into the boat the wind ceased. And those in the boat

worshipped him saying, “Truly you are the son of God.”

Processional Hymn

Eternal Father, strong to save,whose arm hath bound the restless wave,

who bidd’st the mighty ocean deepits own appointed limits keep:O hear us when we cry to theefor those in peril on the sea.

O Christ, whose voice the waters heardand hushed their raging at thy word,who walkedst on the foaming deep,

and calm amid the storm didst sleep:O hear us when we cry to theefor those in peril on the sea.

O Holy Spirit, who didst broodupon the waters dark and rude,

and bid their angry tumult cease,and give, for wild confusion, peace:

O hear us when we cry to theefor those in peril on the sea.

O Trinity of love and power,our brethren shield in danger’s hour;from rock and tempest, fi re and foe,

protect them whereso’er they go:thus evermore shall rise to thee

glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

First ReadingGenesis 37: 1-4 & 12-28 (NRSV) read by Robert Jones

Jacob settled in the land where his father had lived as an alien, the land of Canaan. This is the story of the family of Jacob.

Joseph, being seventeen years old, was shepherding the fl ock with his brothers; he was a helper to the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father. Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he had made him a long robe with sleeves. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.

Now his brothers went to pasture their father’s fl ock near Shechem. And Israel said to Joseph, ‘Are not your brothers pasturing the fl ock

5

Page 6: the NINTH SUNDAY after TRINITY CHORAL EUCHARIST August... · Jacob settled in the land where his father had lived as an alien, the land of Canaan. This is the story of the family

at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.’ He answered, ‘Here I am.’ So he said to him, ‘Go now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the fl ock; and bring word back to me.’ So he sent him from the valley of Hebron.

He came to Shechem, and a man found him wandering in the fi elds; the man asked him, ‘What are you seeking?’ ‘I am seeking my brothers,’ he said; ‘tell me, please, where they are pasturing the fl ock.’ The man said, ‘They have gone away, for I heard them say, “Let us go to Dothan.”’ So Joseph went after his brothers, and found them at Dothan. They saw him from a distance, and before he came near to them, they conspired to kill him. They said to one another, ‘Here comes this dreamer. Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits; then we shall say that a wild animal has devoured him, and we shall see what will become of his dreams.’ But when Reuben heard it, he delivered him out of their hands, saying, ‘Let us not take his life.’ Reuben said to them, ‘Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him’– that he might rescue him out of their hand and restore him to his father. So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the long robe with sleeves that he wore; and they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.

Then they sat down to eat; and looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels carrying gum, balm, and resin, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. Then Judah said to his brothers, ‘What profi t is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not lay our hands on him, for he is our brother, our own fl esh.’

6

And his brothers agreed. When some Midianite traders passed by, they drew Joseph up, lifting him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.

Second ReadingRomans 10: 5-15 (NRSV) read by Nina Bennet

Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that ‘the person who does these things will live by them.’ But the righteousness that comes from faith says, ‘Do not say in your heart, “Who will ascend into heaven?”’ (that is, to bring Christ down) or “Who will descend into the abyss?” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justifi ed, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, ‘No one who believes in him will be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him?

7

Page 8: the NINTH SUNDAY after TRINITY CHORAL EUCHARIST August... · Jacob settled in the land where his father had lived as an alien, the land of Canaan. This is the story of the family

And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’

Reader This is the word of the Lord.All Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn

King of glory, King of peace,I will love thee;

and, that love may never cease,I will move thee.

Thou hast granted my request,thou hast heard me;

thou didst note my working breast,thou hast spared me.

Wherefore with my utmost artI will sing thee,

and the cream of all my heartI will bring thee.

Though my sins against me cried,thou didst clear me,

and alone, when they replied,thou didst hear me.

Seven whole days, not one in seven,I will praise thee;

in my heart, though not in heaven,I can raise thee.

Small it is, in this poor sortto enrol thee:

e’en eternity’s too shortto extol thee.

Gospel Reading

Reader Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,according to Matthew.

All [sung] Glory to you, O Lord.

Matthew 14: 22-33 (NRSV) read by The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking towards them on the lake. But when the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrifi ed, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’ And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, ‘Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.’

Peter answered him, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.’ He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’ When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’

Reader This is the Gospel of the Lord.All [sung] Praise to you, O Christ.

CreedAll We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;through him all things were made.For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spiritand the Virgin Mary and was made man.For our sake he was crucifi edunder Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Sonis worshipped and glorifi ed,who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Offertory Hymn

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,forgive our foolish ways;

re-clothe us in our rightful mind,in purer lives thy service fi nd,

in deeper reverence praise.

In simple trust like theirs who heard,beside the Syrian sea,

the gracious calling of the Lord,let us, like them, without a word

rise up and follow thee.

O Sabbath rest by Galilee!O calm of hills above,

where Jesus knelt to share with theethe silence of eternity,

interpreted by love!

Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease;

take from our souls the strain and stress,and let our ordered lives confess

the beauty of thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desirethy coolness and thy balm;

let sense be dumb, let fl esh retire;speak through the earthquake, wind, and fi re,

O still small voice of calm.

For he is your living Word; through him you have created all things from the beginning, and formed us in your own image.Through him you have freed us from the slavery of sin, giving him to be born of a woman and to die upon the cross; you raised him from the dead and exalted him to your right hand on high. O Jesus, I have promisedto serve thee to the end;be thou forever near me,

my Master and my Friend:I shall not fear the battle

if thou art by my side,nor wander from the pathway

if thou wilt be my guide.

18

Page 19: the NINTH SUNDAY after TRINITY CHORAL EUCHARIST August... · Jacob settled in the land where his father had lived as an alien, the land of Canaan. This is the story of the family

O let me feel thee near me:the world is ever near;

I see the sights that dazzle,the tempting sounds I hear;

my foes are ever near me,around me and within;

but, Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

O let me hear thee speakingin accents clear and still

above the storms of passion,the murmurs of self-will;O speak to reassure me,

to hasten, or control;O speak, and make me listen,

thou guardian of my soul.

O Jesus, thou hast promisedto all who follow thee,

that where thou art in glorythere shall thy servant be;

and, Jesus, I have promisedto serve thee to the end:

O give me grace to follow,my Master and my Friend.

O let me see thy foot-marks,and in them plant mine own;

my hope to follow dulyis in thy strength alone:

O guide me, call me, draw me,uphold me to the end;

and then in heaven receive me,my Saviour and my Friend.
