Two Great Local Events Ahead

Lots of folks in some industries look at back to school time as the signal

to get back to work after a less than busy summer. Well, I can’t speak for everyone, but there was certainly no lessening of work at my business or our Chapter.

Mixer and Educational Event at Belmont Nursery Sept. 11

Our excellent events just keep coming, starting with a Mixer and Educational Event at Belmont Nursery on Wednesday, September 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. Plant expert Jon Reelhorn will share about several new and improved varieties of plants available for local landscapers.

This is a FREE event. There will be food and refreshments. We only ask that you RSVP to Debra Spencer at (559) 650-3554 [email protected], or Jeff Kollenkark at (559) 266-1624 [email protected] so that we can properly plan for the number of attendees.

Bring your lead personnel and plant buyers. What they will learn will put your company one step ahead of your competition. Belmont Nursery is located at 7730 E Belmont Ave, Fresno, CA 93737; (559) 255-6645.

Landscape Expo and Seminar Oct. 4 at Fresno County Sportsmen’s Club

Don’t miss our Friday, October 4 SJV Landscape Expo and Seminar featuring business coach Bill Arman of the Harvest Group. Large Trees Cast Huge ShadowsRemembering Tom De Lany

Is it not a feeling of awe when you come

upon a very large tree? You have to manipu-late your posture to see how high it has grown, perhaps step back to see its spread. When you have the opportunity to get close enough, you are

enveloped by the comforting shade cast by this larger than life specimen. Be it an Oak, Redwood, Ficus or such, the tree gives all its glory while never asking for permission to be so grand or anything from you for what it gives.

People can be like specimen trees. I have had the privilege through CLCA to serve and work with numerous individuals who you could say have a big tree personality. You could even say that the association is filled with larger-than-life trees in its forest of members. When I served as CLCA State President in 2008, our board room was stuffed with bigness!

While all the men I’ll mention were their own species, they were larger than life in their own ways. It humbles me to remember Bob Wade, Gary Vallen, Jon Alsdorf and most recently Tom De Lany. In retrospect, I’m not sure how we managed to keep them all in the same room. If you could imagine a forest of monster huge trees blowing around, fueled by ideas and positions, swaying and pushing against each other. That was the splendor of this board, these men and the other great board members, no less grand, who are still with us.

Tom De Lany’s celebration of life was this last week in Fresno. Most notable to me was the discovery that Tom and I share a love of wind, along with the passion to generate it if it isn’t occurring naturally. Tom loved sail boarding, snow skiing, and hang gliding. I enjoy biking, horseback riding, running, and together we share skiing and driving too fast. Wind has a unique way of communicating energy and Tom brought so much energy into every room he occupied. It was a force to do what and promote what he knew was the right thing.

Of all the big ideas Tom had, be it fighting the unlicensed contractor, donating to good causes, running CLCA’s legislative committee, President Trump as the best-ever leader, one stands out above them all. Tom adopted his grandson Javin. Keep in mind Tom and his beautiful wife Sheila did this in their 60s. That’s pure energy!

In conversations with Tom and on a Thanksgiving visit to their home, the “tree house” near Shaver Lake, I had never seen in Tom, so much pure enthusiasm as when he spoke of and inter-acted with Javin. I know that Javin will carry that energy forward; under a great tree he has been enlightened.

One of the unique things about CLCA is the ability to meet great individuals from around the state. I’m so grateful to have been befriended by Tom and his family, and to have learned from him.

Our industry has many great individuals who cast huge shadows of knowledge, faith, conviction, and generosity. They, like you, are striving to make our world a more beautiful place. Come out to our next event and get to know some of these great individuals.

Membership Has Its Benefits!

Are You Searching For Employees?Webinar: Using the H-2B Visa Program to Recruit Temporary WorkersThursday, September 5, 3 p.m. Click HERE to REGISTER: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/3784798699896851725

Free for CLCA Members. Non-members: $50

One of the biggest complaints from landscape contractors is the difficulty in finding and retaining a reliable workforce. Over the past few years, there has been high turnover as companies struggle to recruit and hold on to laborers. However, for employers who need to add to their workforce to bid on contracts or maintain their current ones, there is the option to bring workers from other countries to the United States for a temporary period of nine months out of the year.

The H-2B visa permits US employers to bring foreign nationals to the United States for the purposes of filling temporary, non-agricultural jobs in the landscape industry.

Learn how you can take advantage of this program during a free CLCA member benefit webinar.

Wintertime WateringMembership has its Benefits

Association Tips: 6 Irresistible Member Benefits that Convince People to Join and Renew From an article by Elizabeth Bell

1. Members-Only Opportunity Boards

Everyone wants to land a great job or great client, right? Your association has the industry connections to make that happen. Keep potential project postings open to the public to entice prospects, but make the application available to members only.

2. Networking and Directory Access

Online networking, like connecting through an online community or looking up experts in a directory, is also a valuable benefit. Plus, when you help members create a network of their peers, they’ll become more engaged and more connected to you through these relation-ships (can you spell r-e-t-e-n-t-i-o-n?).

3. Flexible Online Learning and Certifications

Lifelong learning is a major goal for many people, so provide flexible learning options to help your members master new skills. Award certificates to members who pass a course, or series of courses, so they can demonstrate their expertise to their clients or present and future employers.

4. Meaningful Volunteer Opportunities

Association members volunteer for several reasons, but every one of them is hoping to get something out of the experience.

Two of the top reasons volunteers seek opportunities are to support a cause, and professional experience. Motivate members to join your association and renew their membership by providing these benefits.

5. Exclusive, Industry-Specific Offers

Create your own industry-specific benefit by identifying a core problem that many of your

members face then solve it. You can do this by creating content, like a professional education

course, or by building a partnership with a company.

6. Build Benefits that Provide a Clear ROI

The most irresistible member benefits are the ones that help members see a return on investment (ROI) for their

dues. Discounts, training, professional opportunities, and other benefits that help members save money or advance their careers are some of the best ways to earn ROI. These are some of the benefits that will convince people to join and renew year after year.

Our August 15 Supplier’s Night provided the forum for suppliers and contractors to chat one-on-one and exchange

needs and information regarding some of the latest products and services in the landscape industry.

Sam Perez of Hunter spoke about their 2-wire irrigation system that looks to be less complicated than others on the market. Debra Spencer of Landscape Contractors Insurance Services spoke to attendees about meeting their insurance needs and solving insurance problems. And Keystone Hardscapes reps Chris Hanson and Stacy Fegard chatted with attendees about their pavers, walls and outdoor living materials.

According to Debra Spencer, the location site was really beautiful, and the food was outstanding. Many thanks to the raffle prize donors for their generous gifts. Thank you also to Gina Valadez for her help coordinating and photographing the event.

You Won’t Scale Your Company if the Office Is a Combat Zone From an Article by Jonathan Goldhill, the Goldhill Group

Conflicts within an organization can prevent it from reaching its full potential. Here’s why it hurts the bottom line and how to

fix the problem. Did you know 85% of all employees deal with workplace conflict at some point and 36% of U.S. workers deal with conflict consistently? Personality conflicts, workplace stress, and heavy workloads are the central causes of workplace disputes and can lead to a toxic environment if you don’t handle them effi-ciently.

Naturally, I hear about conflict often in my coaching calls, and this is when I put my “business therapist” hat on and dig into my toolbox for communication tools, tips, and strategies. Since conflict is often a time-consuming activity where employers are left carrying the financial burden due to missed hours or even workdays and employee turnover, I am keen to resolve these issues fast.

Conflict is Costing You MoneyResearch reveals the average American employee spends 2.8 hours per week dealing with workplace conflict. That’s the equivalent of nearly one-and-a-half workdays per month spent navigating the social environment within the organization rather than working.

Your Workers Are Avoiding WorkThe problem goes beyond employees wasting time at work, however, as many use sick days to escape ongoing or potential conflicts. Information suggests that 25% of employees miss work at least once per year because of conflict with a boss or co-worker.

From a financial standpoint, absentee employees cost companies an annual average of about $3,600 for hourly workers and $2,650 for those on salary when factoring in wages, replacement workers, and administrative costs. Many of those missed days are a method

of conflict avoidance, and the added costs make it difficult for a company to thrive.

Your Employees Are QuittingOn top of employees missing workdays, internal conflicts can reach the stage where one or both individuals want to quit the organization. Such turnover exponentially increases employee costs in recruiting, hiring, training, and severance, not to mention the costs of hiring and training the departing employee.

What You Can Do to HelpIs workplace conflict hindering your business? If so, here’s what you can do to help prevent it. There are steps you can take to keep employees happy and defuse workplace conflicts before they reach their breaking point.

Establish a Strong Workplace CultureIt all starts with building a workplace culture that prioritizes employee engagement, keeping all members of the team on task as much as possible. It’s why the Rockefeller Habits checklist– renowned for helping companies scale up by establishing focus, discipline, and vision – leads off with habits meant to foster engagement, accountability and communication:• Team members understand each other’s differences, priorities

and styles.• The team meets frequently (weekly is best) for strategic thinking

and execution planning.• The team is able to engage in constructive debates and all

members feel comfortable participating.

Retreats, workshops, and seminars are also a great way for a company to establish and strengthen the culture within its leader-ship team. Very often these retreats have team-building activities to help a team foster healthy communication, engage in healthy conflict and debate ideas to improve the company.

A management approach that builds trust and rewards good work can help, because people want to feel appreciated, and many leave because of the boss, not the company. So, strive to be an employer that workers want to work for, rather than one they can’t wait to escape. Also, employees who receive steady recognition from their managers are five times more likely to stay at a job, and when you manage their workloads effectively, they are eight times more likely to stay.

Do an Organizational AssessmentYou’ll want to assess your organization to make sure you have the right people in their ideal roles. Ask yourself this question: Would you enthusiastically rehire every person within your organization for his or her current job? If not, it’s time to start making some changes to your hiring process. Since the majority of workplace conflicts are personality based, look for red flags that could lead to issues in the future.

The Goldhill Group has spent more than 10,000 hours coaching business owners, leadership teams, and sales professionals, turning struggling organizations into seven-figure success stories. Contact us today at (818) 716-8826 to learn how we can help you lessen the effects of conflict in your workplace.
